Stewardship Commission From: Word On Fire Blog:

THE NEW AGE: ON THE FEAR OF RELIGION by Matt Nelson January 4, 2021

Many people in our communities are having conversations about faith, but all too often they are associated with negativity and emo-tion driven arguments. This is certainly true for our young people today as they come to terms with their own religion and faith. To tie this into other letters of this kind, we can approach this conversation with charitable intentions so that everyone feels heard.

Do people today, generally speaking, fear and despise religion? Christopher Hitchens was a skeptic who made no bones about his distaste for religion. Hitchens believed “religion poisons everything,” and seized upon many an opportunity to publicly “de-evangelize” and promote his anti-religious worries. In God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, implicit fear is evident in these words of warning:

“Violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism and tribalism and bigotry, invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children: or-ganized religion ought to have a great deal on its con-science.”

But what is fear? Why not just concede with the theists that there is more to reality than the natural? Why not go the full distance and admit the supernatural into one’s conception of reality?

In fact, Thomas Nagel humbly admits this much when he writes, “I am talking about . . . the fear of religion itself. I speak from experi-ence, being strongly subject to this fear myself: I want atheism to be true and am made uneasy by the fact that some of the most intel-ligent and well-informed people I know are religious believers.”

Not all skeptics share the same moral concerns...For many, the worry is far more existential, and perhaps less easy to articulate. Perhaps this is why New Age spirituality has taken off over the past several decades. A surge in enthusiasm for things like Eastern meditation techniques, Reiki, crystals, astrology, Feng Shui, the recreational use of psychedelic drugs, and other like practices have betrayed in our culture a genuine interest in the mystical. Even among the unaffiliated (as Pew and other research organizations have shown), there remains a strong belief in some kind of trans-cendent reality.

Here’s what C. S. Lewis observes about the “spiritual but not reli-gious” bent of mind:

“[The Life Force philosophy] gives one much of the emotional comfort of believing in God and none of the less pleasant consequences. When you are feeling fit and the sun is shining and you do not want to believe that the whole universe is a mere mechanical dance of atoms, it is nice to be able to think of this great mysterious Force rolling on through the centuries and carrying you on its crest. If, on the other hand, you want to do something rather shabby, the Life-Force, being only a blind force, with no morals and no mind, will never interfere with you like that troublesome God we learned about when we were children.”

But I wonder if those who fear religion have ever really thought about whether they might have it all inside out? I wonder if they have ever considered the possibility that only an explicitly religious (and dare I say, Catholic) worldview can adequately ground the hu-man powers and rights they revere, and offer a context of existence within which such powers as autonomy, authority, and independ-ence can most truly and forcefully be unleashed for the good.

Thank you to those who are financially sup-porting us during the pandemic. We are pray-ing for all our families, especially those facing financial stress.

The practice of tithing provides a regular reminder of your dependence on God. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing moti-vates you to remember God’s faithfulness and en-ables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of our needs.

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 16 & 17, 2021

First Reading 1 Samuel 3: 3b – 10, 19

Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was. The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.” “I did not call you,” Eli said. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep.

Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am,” he said. “You called me.” But Eli an-swered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.” At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD, be-cause the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your serv-ant is listening.”

When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be with-out effect. Responsorial: Psalm 40

R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 6: 13c - 15a, 17 - 20

Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power.

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a per-son commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. Gospel John 1: 35 - 42 John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translated means Teacher —, “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the after-noon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Mes-siah” — which is translated Christ —. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is translated Peter.

We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. in Mtg Rooms A & B. Our next meet-ing is January 12. Please join us!

In the Gospel today, Jesus asks “What are you looking for?” Often, we are looking for happi-ness in very selfish ways, but we find that when we look for ways to make others happy, it is then that we truly become happy. As you

place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to believe and to trust. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Helpline is 610-470-9090.

Community Gardens: Our garden has been put to rest for the winter, and we are looking forward to spring, when planting will begin again. If you are interested in volunteering,

please email Lawrence at [email protected].

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Do you know some-one who is suffering, struggling, facing over-whelming challenges, or major life changes? Consider gifting them with a prayer shawl or

lap blanket to bring them comfort and let them know people are praying for them, no matter their age, faith, or problem. Our ministry members are knitters and crocheters of all skill levels and others who deliver our handiwork. All of us weave prayers into our handiwork and pray for all our recipients who live nearby, around the country, and even overseas! If you’d like to join our ministry, our gather-ings are fun, inspirational, and optional. To find out more or select a piece for someone, contact Jan Smith at 610-269-1756 or [email protected]. We meet every other Monday at noon as noted in the bulletin calendar. NOTE: We will not be meeting December 28. Pease join us Monday, January 11, at 12 p.m.

Caring for Friends: Cooks: Congratulations on your dedication to helping people who are in need and thanks for your ongoing support of this ministry. As you may know, we had

a surplus of meals for a while but hopefully we are back to normal. You will be interested to know that there were 3,122 meals and 290 soups donated in 2020 thanks to your hard work. Please continue to cover the meals in foil and label the menu with freezer #137. Also, there is a continuing need for low-salt meals so please put a ribbon or marker on the package when you close them. Visitors: Thank you for delivering the Angel Tree gifts to your friends and for your continuing dedication. Anyone interested in helping the Caring for Friends Ministry or if you have questions, please con-tact [email protected] or call Ellen at 484-678-6602.

Good Works: We are St. Peter Parish vol-unteers who join many other local Christian church groups in performing home repairs. We reach out in love and friendship to trans-

form substandard houses into warmer, safer, and drier homes, and by doing so, turn despair into hope. The team welcomes new volunteers of all skill levels. For more in-formation or to be a part of Good Works, contact Jim at 610-496-1393 or [email protected].
