Mra Qamp bell A frw years ago Mr Campbell with his family took up his residence in southern California for hit health which had become Impaired However even up to a short time Wore hte death he was actively engaged In his favorite pursuit of mining and devoted much time to hie properties in San Bernardino county The announcement of Mr Campbells death will cause sincere regret his many friends to Utah Nevada lid California His disposition was kindly and bin manner genial In a quiet way he distributed charity to the deferring and many men and women who are now prominent in the tate are grateful to him for his benefactions m obtaining an education when it was a more dif ficult matter than It would be now In former year he paid out thousands of dollars for the education of poor chil dren He was possessed of raze InteW gence and great capacity- A Seller of a Kieb Mina Mr Campbell was about 77 years of age and was a native of Missouri After following mining in various parts of coast and mountain states with in different success he came to Utah in the early TO When Horn Silver mine in the southern part of the state was but little More than a mere prospect It passed Into the hands of himself Matthew Cullen and Pat and Dennis Ryan The mines development proved a veritable and in 1S7S it was sold for SM6M6 each of the partners owning an equal interest The sale of the mine resulted ix the exten- sion of the railroad more than IN miles itWith his fortune made Mr Campbell continued to invest in mining proper- ties chiefly in Beaver and Iron coun ties and later In Nevada and southern California Recently lie parted with large blocks of ground known to be rich in copper and other minerals near Mil ford pad Prince but his holdings there and in the Iron belt further south are still very considerable The Estate ie Valuable Hie wealth i believed by friends to exceed 1060000 including his mining properties a beautiful home at River- side and real estate in Salt Lake be sides a large ownership in the DoOly block About a dosen years ago Mr Camp bell married Eleanor Crotrrh Young who at that time was society reporter of the Tribune Surviving him are his widow two little sons and a daughter besides an elder Charles by former marriage who lives in Kansas In recent years Mr Campbell made frequent visits to Salt Lake and rarely did he fail to avail himself of an op- portunity to renew old friendshfp- sHk Part ia Utahs Political History- An overshadowing incident in Mr Campbells public career was his can- didacy on the Liberal ticket in 1880 for delegate in congress against George Q Cannon Mr Campbell received 1367 votes to 18W8 for his opponent on the Peoples party ticket but Governor Murray issued the certificate of election to the Liberal or nonMormon candi date becaus of a question as to Mr Cannons citizenship and his polyg- amous status But neither Mr Camp bell nor Mr Cannon was seated as congressional representative The delegates seat was vacant until John T Caine was elected While is not definitely known whether Mr Campbells remains will be brought to Salt Lake for interment it is believed that the burial will be at Riverside CaL CUPID BBBAXS A BEOOBD
