Presidents message …….Ah, the joys of spark ignition model airplane engines!
On my desk in my office I have a select few model airplane engines on display. OK, “Few” was the correct
description years ago and now it is a “pile” of engines. Way too many for any reasonable person to use in a
lifetime. At the last SAM 8 meeting I bought several more and I am happy to say that I am delighted to have
them. These are not just engines, they are not just ignition engines, they are Homer’s engines and therefore
they are special. When my father passed away in April of 2002, I was just beginning to get back into flying Old
Timer models. I had taken the typical leave of absence that is required by most of us to get married, raise a
family and figure out how to earn a living. My dad and I had planned to take the trip of a lifetime to travel to
Muncie Indiana for the SAM Champs
in 2002 but after years of planning, he
never made it. I went to the SAM
champs in 2002 with my brother and
family and several of the guys from
SAM 8 as well but my dad never made
the champs. I was feeling pretty alone
when my favorite flying partner
suddenly left me and Homer was one
of the first in SAM 8 to make me feel
welcome. I have treasured the friends
that I have made in SAM 8 and
appreciate just how quickly the club
members included me into the fold.
So in the future, when my models are
flying especially well, it just may be
because my models are flying with one
of Homer’s engines up front.

At the last WMC contest, no one flew an ignition event. Not a one…
I brought two models to fly and had significant issues with both of them. Will Tilse had trimming issues with his
model and it was successfully “re-kitted”. In fact I think his engine was pretty much “re-kitted” too.
Two days before the recent fall meet with San Valeers and SCAMPS in Lost Hills the SCAMPS canceled all the
Old Timer events(!) This is very worrisome since this is one of the premier Old Timer meets on the West Coast.
My brother and I have a saying… “Time to use the good balsa”. It is a simple reminder that none of us are
getting younger (except for Will Tilse). Build that big beautiful Old Timer, use the good wood, put that special
engine up front that you have been saving for way too many years, use some of the “good” rubber that you have
been hoarding (before it rots!). The important thing is for us to get out and support our wonderful hobby. We
at SAM 8 are doing everything that we can to promote our hobby and to encourage everyone to turn off the TV,
shut down the computer and build and fly something that you can be proud of. Come join in the fun!
See you out flying your new model and See you at the Rainbow…!
Steve Dona, The Prez

SAM 8 minutes for October 11th, 2018 (attendance =19)
Current SAM 8 T-Shirt remaining count by size: Medium = 12 Large = 4
At the sound of the gavel and a whistle from VP W.Tilse the Prez called the meeting to order at 12:18p
To start the meeting, Will entertained with a slide show of the last Willamette Contest. Steve re-capped the events including Will’s Zipper nose plant.
It’s time for our indoor venue again at Finn Hill. Friday (10/12/2018) will be the all school assembly where Steve will give a talk to the student body while Mr. Higgins flies indoor models. On Saturday the first Finn Hill build and fly session will be held in the school gym. The adults from 0900 to 1200 and the students from approx. 1200 to 1530. Remember, we’re obliged to be out by 1600.
Dave brought a collection of indoor planes the Finn Hill kids will be building over the season.
Jerry Morrissey brought in his P-30 and announced it’s for sale.
A question was put forward regarding the SAM 8 T-shirts and whether long sleeve and sweatshirt versions could be had. Maybe hats could be ordered as well? Will was asked to inquire so a list for sign-up was passed around.
Will played a video of Bill Swift and his “Top Banana” powered with an Oliver Tiger diesel engine. A very short flight.
It’s Auction Time: . Homer brought in a large quantity of engines and other miscellaneous things.
Bob Einhaus did an amazing job putting items through and still managed to stay (somewhat) sane. Will Tilse and Al Fernandez did the fetch it work so Bob could stay focused. Great job guys! BTW, a total of 82 items, some were bundled, passed his hands.
Mtg. adjourned: 2 pm ++

Finn Hill Middle School Build and Fly Session Sunday, November 18th, 2018
Consisting mainly of the Mountain Lion MK. III Indoor Contest!
Steve Dona and I have been talking for some time about having another indoor contest similar to the AMA Alpha contest that we had last school year, but this time we would use the Mountain Lion Mk. III laser cut kit. The idea is to build and fly the model in the Finn Hill Middle School gym starting at 9:00 o’clock in the morning and finish the contest by 12:00 o’clock noon. Prizes in the form of laser-cut Peanut scale kits would be awarded to the top three winners.
OK SAM 8 members, time to show our stuff to the Finn Hill students! So, come one, come all to our first adult* Indoor Build and Fly Contest! SAM 8 members are encouraged to stay and help the middle school students build and fly their own Mountain Lion Mk. IIIs in the afternoon.
*Note: adult does not necessarily imply that topless dancers will attend the event, nor will adult beverages be served!
Who may enter: All SAM 8 club members and any non-SAM 8 adult Finn Hill volunteers.
Where: Finn Hill Middle School gymnasium.
When: Sunday, November 18, 2018, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Entry Fee: $6.00 for the Mountain Lion Mk. III kit.
Prizes: Several Laser Cut Peanut Scale Kits to choose from for the top 3 winners.
Here are the Contest Rules:
1. Mountain Lion Mk. III kit must be purchased ($6.00 per kit) and built in the Finn Hill Middle School gymnasium on the day of the contest. Limit 1 kit per contestant.
2. No prior building is allowed! (That way everyone comes to build and fly!!!)
3. The only modification allowed to the Mountain Lion Mk. III kit is the elimination of the wing tip doublers.
4. Minimum empty weight of the completed Mountain Lion Mk. III w/o rubber: 9 grams. Light models must be ballasted with clay to obtain the min. empty weight.
5. An 8 foot length of 3/32” wide rubber shall be provided to each contestant. No other rubber shall be allowed during the contest. Rubber motor width shall remain 3/32” wide and will NOT be stripped narrower. There are no restrictions on the length and weight of the rubber motor. Note: a short segment of plastic stirring straw may be placed on the motor to prevent the rubber knots from getting jammed between the motor stick and the prop shaft hook.
6. An unlimited number of official flight attempts are allowed for each contestant.
7. Contest ends at 12:00 o’clock noon on the day of the contest.
E:\A SAM 8 Newsletter\A DG Newsletter\2018\2018-11.docx 4
8. This is a “No-Touch” contest. Timing starts when the model leaves the contestant’s hands and ends when the model touches anything, such as the floor, ceiling, beams, fan housings, basketball hoops, backboard, nets, etc.
9. Each contestant shall submit their highest flight time to the Contest Director prior to the 12:00 o’clock noon deadline.
10. Times shall be reduced to the nearest whole second, with fractions of seconds dropped per AMA Indoor Rules. For instance, 49.98 seconds would be reduced to 49 seconds.
We can talk more about this contest at the SAM 8 meeting, November 8th.
Regards, David Higgins
