Foundational Principles of Habitat for Humanity

• Demonstrate the love and teachings of Jesus Christ to all people. All faiths, ages, races, and cultures are welcome. The board will reflect the ethnic diversity of the area.

• People-to-people partnership. Affiliates

originate at the grass-roots level. • Build simple, decent and affordable housing

with people who are living in inadequate housing and unable to secure housing by conventional means.

• Homeowner families are selected without

discrimination according to need, willingness to work and ability to pay and must contribute ‘sweat-equity.’

• Sell houses with no profit, at zero-interest,

and use payments to build additional houses. • Each affiliate tithes at least 10% of

unrestricted cash donations.

11

HABITAT FACTS Families

Applicants are selected based on three criteria: Need Ability to pay Willingness to partner

Family Selection criteria: Earn between 30-60% of the county median income

(up to $32,460 for a family of 4) Live in inadequate housing Have good credit Are willing to work on building their own house Make monthly payments on a no down-payment, zero-interest mortgage Homebuyers must contribute 250 hours of ‘sweat-equity’ (400 hours for a two-parent household, or if there is a grown child living at home) Nearly 40 hours of sweat-equity is earned through homeownership training, including:

Financial literacy Budgeting Basic home maintenance and repair How to be a good neighbor Decorating on a budget

Saginaw Habitat for Humanity’s Mission Statement:

Saginaw Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can live

and grow into all that God intends within Saginaw County.

SAGINAW HABITAT FOR HUMANITY’S BUILDING TRADES PROGRAM Saginaw Habitat for Humanity is proud to assist in the development of young students that have an interest in the building trades and partnering with area schools to build simple, decent houses with people less fortunate. Saginaw Habitat for Humanity needs approximately $75,000 in donations and in-kind gifts for each house it builds. 46 of our 158 houses have been built through our School Building Trades Program with a total investment by Saginaw Habitat for Humanity of more than $2 million. This evening’s proceeds will be used to continue that mission of helping deserving families realize the joy of home ownership, while at the same time partnering with schools and providing opportunity and experience for interested young student builders.

ReStore Saginaw, established in 2003, is a way of recycling and raising money for operational expenses of Saginaw Habitat for Humanity. It is staffed with mostly volunteer labor to sell cabinets, windows, screens, doors, fixtures, lighting units, home furnishings and appliances culled or donated from remodeling projects or house demolitions; donated

close-out items from home supply stores ranging from tools to wallpaper to paint; and left-over or extra materials like roofing, siding and floor covering from groups like the Home Builders Association. The gathered goods are then sold at 50% or more off their value.

Family Relations has placed 9 qualified families in homes this year.   Before the end of the year we hope to have at least 2 more families purchase decent, affordable housing of their own, with an affordable, zero‐interest loan. Homeowners’ mortgage payments are ‘recycled’ into housing for additional families.  In 2010, we have provided budgeting and financial management for 50 families, and worked in partnership with Michigan Works! and CAC Dream Catchers in finding employment for our families. We have also coordinated and managed 25 applicants for the Home Repair program, and worked with scores of families in the Northmoor neighborhood thru our Neighborhood Revitalization program.  All 158 partner families have received guidance and assistance in all areas of homeownership. Right now, however, we have 30 families on our waiting list.
