BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU 2014 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

San Diego HardwareBill Haynsworth

If you think hammers and nails are all that make up a hardware store, welcome to the legacy of San Diego Hardware. Late in 1892, four San Diegans founded a new venture, which was to be called San Diego Hard-ware. The four founders had previous experience in the hardware business and their philosophy of courteous, friendly service and a wide selection of hard-to-fi nd items remains the core value of the company today. Typical shelf items back in the day were hog ring pliers, wash boards, pitcher pumps, broad axes, draw knives, clothes wringers, meat grinders, and ice chippers. In 1922 the company’s new location on Fifth Avenue boasted three entrances and a shooting range in the basement where a sharpshooter from Winchester put on shooting demonstrations as the retailer became known as The Winchester Store. Today San Diego Hardware stands as the oldest family owned and 10th oldest business in San Diego. With co-owners Bill Haynsworth (who bought the business from his father in 1983) and Charles Fleming at the helm, a new era of specialty products has kept the retail operation fl ourishing. In March of 2006 the downtown store was shuttered and an expansive 8,000 square foot multi-level showroom was opened in Kearny Mesa with much easier access for home owners and contractors throughout San Diego. It was literally “build it and they will come,” with business increasing by 40 percent. Decorative builder’s hardware for high end homes has supplanted nuts and bolts and shoppers can peruse an inventory of more than 7,000 knobs, 3,000 hinges, and 1000 different door locks in styles from Arts and Crafts to contemporary.

BDO 2014 ENTREPRENEURIAL AWARD

Ace Relocation Systems Inc.

Larry and Dan LammersIn 1968 Reg Lammers relocated his family from Min-

nesota to take a job as general manager of a local San Diego moving and storage company. This move proved to be the beginning of a business that has expanded and evolved over it’s more than 40 year history. Lammers of-fi cially purchased the San Diego moving company and another one in Long Beach and renamed the company ACE of California, agent for Atlas Van Lines. In 1988 the company expanded to Northern California with the opening of an offi ce and warehouse in San Jose. When the Seattle offi ce opened in 1993 the company name was changed to Ace Relocation Systems, Inc. Today, Ace is a family owned and operated business with nine offi ce and warehouse locations strategically placed throughout the country. It has grown to be the third largest Atlas Van Lines agency group and the second largest hauling agency for Atlas, making approximately 15,000 domes-tic and international moves per year for individuals, families and businesses with 20 percent from relocating U.S military families. Until his passing in 2008, Reg Lammers held a seat on the Atlas Van Lines national board of directors. Lammer’s sons have carried on the family tradition. Larry Lammers was named company president in 2003 and younger son Dan Lammers has held management positions in the Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. offi ces and currently works out of the San Diego corporate offi ce as vice president of opera-tions. The culture of Ace truly exemplifi es family values

and employees are part of that extended family with numerous senior drivers working at Ace for more than 20 years. Ace is consistently awarded the annual Milton M. Hill Award for outstanding service and quality. This award is recognized as the pinnacle for service excellence throughout the industry. Ace Relocation Systems Inc. has grown steadily through the years with offi ces in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle, Phoenix, Austin, Chicago, Orlando, and Washington, DC/Baltimore. The company had sales of $34 million in 2003, while sales in 2013 hit $54 million.

OPUS BANK 2014 FOUNDERS AWARD

Harborside Refrigerated Services Inc.

Ed and Frank PlantEdward ‘Ed’ F. Plant grew up in San Diego. In 1969 he

purchased his fi rst company in insulation off 8th & Impe-rial Avenues where today, Petco Park stands. Along with his son Frank (who joined the business in 1979) Ed Plant purchased a large refrigerated warehouse across the street from his insulation supply business that came to be San Diego Refrigerated Services Inc. (SDRS). Through steady growth, SDRS expanded to Harborside Refriger-ated Services in 2000. Today Harborside’s business is on a global scale working with maritime commodities from Central and South America, Australia, and the Near East. It offers a variety of services specifi cally designed to meet the needs of produce importers and export-ers that includes computerized inventory control with radio frequency bar code scanning, load consolidation, cross docking and inspection services. Since 1997 the company has handled more than 265 breakbulk ships (cargo is non-containerized and is usually transported as individual pieces due to being oversized and overweight), and annually moves more than 4,000 Dole containers and more than 100,000 metric tons of cargo. Ed Plant’s vigilant efforts to save waterfront businesses and jobs earned him the title as fi rst chairman of the Working Waterfront Group in 2004. He has served in many civic roles including: a San Diego Food Bank director; head-ing the Economic Development Committee for the Na-tional City Chamber of Commerce and currently serving as an executive board member; director of San Diego Community Bank; currently a member of the Port’s Maritime Advisory and Marine Terminal Community Committees; a San Diego Bowl Game Association Red Coat; and on the board for the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. Frank Plant also has chaired the Economic Development Committee for the National City Chamber of Commerce; served as treasurer for the South Pacifi c Chapter of the IARW; and is currently vice-chair of the World Food Logistics Organization. Both Ed and Frank Plant continue to travel the world promoting business for San Diego.

COX BUSINESS 2014 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

The San Diego ChargersA teacher has remarked that she could spend all

day telling her students that eating “hot Cheetos” and drinking lots of soda was bad for them—but it wouldn’t have the same impact or infl uence as the day a Chargers player stood in her classroom and told her class that he couldn’t eat bags of “hot Cheetos” if he wanted to stay in shape and play in the NFL. This is only a sampling of testimonials to the work the San Diego Chargers and the Spanos family have done in supporting community endeavors in San Diego. Both through their private

philanthropy and their professional team ownership of the San Diego Chargers, the Spanos family is truly a story of the American dream and giving back. In 1951 at the age of 27, Alex Spanos decided he could no longer support his growing family on $40 per week working at his father’s bakery. He borrowed $800, purchased a used catering truck and set out on his own by providing cater-ing and support services for the migrant farm workers in California’s central valley. From there he built one of the leading real estate and development companies in the industry and is the patriarch of one of the most accomplished and philanthropic families in the United States. For more than a quarter century, the Spanos family has guided the San Diego Chargers not only on the playing fi eld, but as a signifi cant supporter of San Diego’s civic, cultural and educational growth. Under the watchful eye of team President Dean Spanos, the Chargers Community Foundation has grown to become a leader in assisting schools, supporting youth sports and aiding critical causes important to the community, providing more than $11 million to support a wide range of services and resources for programs directly affecting youth and families in the county. Major support efforts include Make-A-Wish San Diego, Rady Children’s Hos-pital, Bikes for Kids, the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. In 2004 the organization helped thwart the cancellation of Balboa Park’s beloved “December Nights” celebration with a signifi cant con-tribution that kept the annual holiday event on solid fi nancial footing. One of the Foundation’s major efforts is the Chargers Champions, which focuses on improving physical fi tness in San Diego County schools by provid-ing grants for athletic, physical fi tness and nutrition programs. The program reached a milestone in 2013 as it awarded its 100th grant to the San Diego community, bringing the total to almost $5 million dollars.

LEAD SAN DIEGO 2014 GENERATIONS CUP AWARD

Ace Parking Management Inc.

Keith JonesEvan Jones founded Ace Parking more than half

a century ago, creating a family business that has transitioned from son to grandson. After graduating from Stanford University, son Scott Jones began his career at Ace Parking, followed by grandson and cur-rent Managing Principal and Partner Keith Jones. The company’s trademarked motto of “Every Thank You Earned,” still serves as the mission statement for the entire organization. Under the leadership of the three Joneses, Ace Parking quickly became a giant in the park-ing management industry with more than 450 locations and 5,000 employees. The company serves more than a quarter million people daily, growing from a one man offi ce into a company that extends service to more than 250,000 customers daily. Keith Jones believes that the qualities he was taught by his father, as well as the lessons he learned from both his grandfathers (Evan Jones and Malin Burnham) have helped him to embrace philan-thropy and community service. He sits on the boards of San Diego’s Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown San Diego Partnership, and several other prominent organizations. Ace Parking has become heav-ily involved in the communities in which it operates and has collaborated with more than 50 charitable organiza-tions across America.
