History This property has been in the same family for generations and the

main house in the area. There is much local history and importance attached to the place. Brú Na Mara has been the family home of the current owners, the Connolly's since they

moved from Mason Island in 1820.

The site of the current complex was originally a ‘Clochan’, or a small grouping of six houses, and home to the extended family.

When the current owner's Grandfather returned from Baltimore, Maryland in 1887, he bought out his relations and consolidated

the holding, and the complex became a centre for trade and craftwork.

There was a Cobbler's workshop and a merchant's shop on the site. From this shop, local agricultural products and seafood were

exported to London and Paris, and in return the shop sold everything from a needle to an anchor to the residents of the

local area and the nearby islands.

The primary residence, a two storey house, was built on the site

of the previous main residence in 1919. This house was expanded and turned into a successful guesthouse, providing

accommodation and full board to an international clientele from the early 1930's to the late 1970's.

The entire complex was renovated by the current owners

between 2001 and 2002, and again between 2011 and 2012. Since 2002 it has operated as a family home, a small farm, and a

successful self-catering accommodation business, that has received consistently excellent 5 star reviews, with many repeat

visitors.

St Mac Dara’s Day This is a popular annual summer celebration held on the island and at the pier for the local patron saint to bless the fisherman

and ask for their safe passage, followed by a regatta. Throughout the day boats leave from the pier to ferry people across to St Mac

Dara’s Island for a free visit.
