Home is emotion: the design of home devices as emotion-carriers.

Abstract

This paper is written as part of a reflection on the emotional influences on product design and will take as a case of study a design of a humidifier for Philips. Home is emotion. Home is this word from which the definition include the word “feeling”. Home is since ever this place where people feel safe, home is also this place where you feel good. In the 1980s Faith Popcorn1 a marketing consultant talked for the first time about this willingness that people have to stay home. The fact that with the new technology they don’t need to go out anymore and she called that “Cocooning”. The definition of cocooning on this time, on her terms was “a commercially significant trend that would lead to, among other things, stay-at-home electronic shopping “ (Popcorn). Nowadays, technology is everywhere and yes, people don’t need anymore to go out that often. It’s even possible to work from home. But cocooning doesn’t have this bad connotation anymore. The Cocooning term is now used (principally in marketing) to call all those things that you can do home to feel good on it. From cloth to furniture including any home device, the cocooning is everywhere. I’m sure that, you noticed lately how popular is the cocooning, how any product is subject to taking part on your comfort and how consumers are looking for this well-being.

The technology is in part cause of the cocooning phenomena, but it’s also used in the cocooning process. To realize it, think about all the devices used for the personal care. While thinking we can notice that this technology used home is most of the time designed as a technological device and not as a home device. Or Home is emotion, the emotion of the user is not taken into account. This paper is dealing with this aspect of emotion design and is calling into question this gap between the design of the device, its use and its emotional benefits. The research will deal with the proper design of the device, with the interaction between the user and the device and the role of the device in the Home. It will give a proposition of interactions and designs applicable to the humidifier.

Home, emotion, design, strange, different

This article was written in a design and emotion research. It leads to the design of ILMA, an emotional humidifier.

13

More than just a humidifier, ILMA combines emotion and feeling through an atypical object.
