Chaucer Returns
Today we welcome back Canterbury RFC back to Lockleaze to resume
their quest within National League Rugby. After a season away they
certainly bounced back at their first attempt and have had a fairly solid
start with some impressive and some not so impressive performances.
But weather permitting let’s hope today Dings can carry on where
they have left off after the last couple of weeks of pretty impressive
performances.
Last weeks away day to the Isle of Dogs was certainly worth the trip.
A fine performance on the day against a struggling team, but still a test at home, meant that we
came away with 5 points, for 4 tries. Not only that but all 4 tries were scored by The Ladies, and
I can’t remember the last time, that happened, it was probably when Gary James had hair!
The trip was complimented by the presence of a true rugby legend in Jason Leonard.
Resplendent in his jeans and what I think was his gardening sweatshirt, still he’s a big bloke
and has lost none of his allure. Although 3 hours in the presence of John (Dai) Davis meant he
went home battered and confused. This was further compounded when I was approached by
our very own Matt Hudd, who asked who was Jason Leonard and did he play a bit? I suppose
it can only happen to us.
One thing that fascinates me about the away trips, is that it normally means 3-4 hours on the
coach getting to the games, but it only takes 21/2 hours to get home? Still it meant that the lads
could dress up in their glad rags and pursue their dreams in a Bristol club, all celebrating well
into the night and also to give Christian Gervais a send off he would remember as he sets off
on a planned years travelling in the outback of Australia. Well if he actually gets there, as a
planned stop off in Thailand may well put a spanner in the plans, anyway Christian have a good
time but be careful out there it’s a dangerous place - well it looks it in all the films!
The Knights played their second competitive fixture of the season last week and a resounding
win for the newly appointed coach in the persona of Bob Hesford sent all home happy. Well all
apart from the local tree huggers who felt the trimming of the trees had gone a little too far. All I
would add is have a look at Terry Webbs & Thatch’s hands and ankles after trying to get through
what’s probably 30 years of undergrowth and although they never found my old pair of gym
pumps thrown in a fit when I didn’t make the school team, they did find a number of newly built
houses that seem to have sprung up over night. Still that’s progress for you and it seems they
wouldn’t mind Webby clambering over the spiked fencing to retrieve his balls!
So on to today and a team who have always given the Dings a hard game at Lockleaze and will be
full of confidence, let’s just hope Bristol have enough water boys this week and lets the lads play.
Come on you Dings Boys!
Steve Lloyd

Welcome to Canterbury RFC
We extend a warm welcome this afternoon to our visitors Canterbury and hope that all players,
officials and supporters enjoy their visit to our Lockleaze ground.
Founded in 1929 Canterbury are the first ever East Kent club to achieve National League status.
That milestone was reached when they became champions of London and South East Division
One in 2005/06. After five seasons in the league they were relegated in 2010-11 on final day of
the season losing a decider with Westcombe Park. However, they responded in positive fashion
to win back their place in National 2 South at the first attempt last season.
Canterbury currently sit in seventh place on fifteen points with three wins from seven games.
The wins were 74-15 home to Barking, 35-7 at Lydney and 21-20 home to Chinnor and the
losses 17-32 at Bournemouth, 31-55 at Worthing, 19-36 at Redruth and a home defeat 7-41
last week to fancied Hartpury.
There have been ten head to heads in league rugby between the clubs with Canterbury record-
ing six wins, the Dings three wins and one draw with the most recent scores in season 2010-11
a 30-30 draw here at Lockleaze and a 20-18 win for Dings in Canterbury.
Good luck to both sides may the best team win and all spectators committed or neutral enjoy
entertaining afternoon’s rugby.

believe to be the centre of Paganism,
Landseer Avenue. It is many years since
Chaucer wrote of the tales of his pilgrims on
their way from the Tabard Inn in Southwark
to the beautiful Cathedral City.
Well we too seem to be on a bit of a journey
this season also facing trials and tribulations,
but as has been said “that which doesn’t kill
you makes you stronger”, and the last couple
of weeks has seen an upsurge in fortunes.
Mind you we might be giving the wrong
impression allowing the ‘girly threes’ to score
all the tries, where was Josh ‘Tom Daley’
Lloyd this week? The rest of the league will
think we have gone soft.
We had a great conversation with the boys
from Bournemouth the other week, a very
similar outlook to ours, shame their player
coach wanted to talk to the referee through-
out the entire game, no wonder he was short
of breath when the chips were down.
It was good to have ‘Wints’ looking after our
replacements during the game, I did think it
grossly unfair when someone commented
that we would probably be docked another 6
points as he didn’t seem too sure who he
was sending on! He also complained that the
language used on the top touch was not that
to which he was used to hearing from the
‘bear pit’. I explained that the likes of Ray
and Jim brought a certain eloquence to
proceedings not experienced anywhere else.
Whilst on the subject of Top Touch inhabitants
we are all sad to see that Rich’s droopy arm
syndrome has returned, however he seems
to have overcome the drawback and has
started smoking his infernal cheroots with his
good arm, the only benefit his chain smoking
delivers is a an indication for Woody and
Mitch as to the direction of the wind!
The ‘Top Touchers’ continue to enjoy good
banter and badinage with the match officials,
including assessors, I’m not too sure if the
officials share that view, but we are never
rude or personal.
Finally I do think the pitch has looked good
thus far. Years ago, by this point of the season,
the pitch would have begun to resemble the
diamond so familiar on many pitches, with
only the corners retaining grass. DS corner
being an exception. Whilst talking of DS
corner when will the coaches and skipper
realise there are points to be had down there.
Get ‘em in there, keep ‘em in there, and
shove ‘em over. Simple, basic tactics, ask
Johnny Thorne, hundreds of push overs
in DS corner, we never came out without
a score.
Come on then lads let’s make it three in a row.
