Blow, blow thou winter wind,

Thou art not so unkind,As man’s ingratitude,

Thy tooth is not so keen,Because thou art not seen,

Although thy breath be rude.Heigh-ho! Sing heigh-ho!

unto the green holly; Most friendship is feigning,

most loving mere folly:

Then heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly.Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky,That does not bite so nighAs benefits forgot,As benefits forgot,Thou the waters warp,Thou sting is not so sharpAs friend remembered not

Riddle SongANON (circa early 15th century English song)

I have a young sister, far beyond the seaMany be the dowries that she sent me

She sent me the cherry withouten any stoneAnd so she did the dove withouten any bone

She sent me the briar without any rind* She bade me love my lemman* withoute longing

How should any cherry be withoute stone? And how should any dove be withoute bone?

How should any briar been without rind? How should love mine lemman without longing?

When the cherry was a flow'r then had it no stoneWhen the dove was an egg then had it no bone

When the briar was onbred* then it had no rindWhen the maiden hath that she loveth she is without longing

rind = branches lemman = sweetheart onbred = in the seed

There Is A Garden In Her FaceBy Thomas Campion

There is a garden in her faceWhere roses and white lilies grow;A heav'nly paradise is that placeWherein all pleasant fruits do flow. There cherries grow which none may buy,Till "Cherry ripe" themselves do cry.

Those cherries fairly do encloseOf orient pearl a double row,Which when her lovely laughter shows,They look like rose-buds fill'd with snow;Yet them nor peer nor prince can buy,Till "Cherry ripe" themselves do cry.

The Bellman’s SongHerrick

From noise of Scare-fires rest ye free,From Murders, Benedicitie. From all mischances that may fright,You pleasing slumbers in the night,Mercie secure ye all and keepThe Goblin from ye, while ye sleep.Past one aclock, and almost two,My Masters all, Good day to you.

Her eyes like angels watch them still,Her brows like bended bows do stand,Threat'ning with piercing frowns to killAll that attempt with eye or handThose sacred cherries to come nigh,Till "Cherry ripe" themselves do cry.

Midnight's Bell Midnight's bell goes ting, ting, ting,Then dogs do howl, and not a bird does sing But the nightingale, and she cries twit, twit, twit;Owls then on every bough do sit;Ravens croak on chimneys' tops; The cricket in the chamber hops; The nibbling mouse is not asleep,But he goes peep, peep, And the cats cry mew, mew, mew,And still the cats cry mew, mew, mew.

Good AleBring us in good ale, and Bring us in good ale, Bring us in good ale, and Bring us in good ale, For our blessed Lady’s sake, Bring us in good ale.Bring us in no brown bread, for that is made of bran,Nor bring us in no white bread, for therein is no game,But Bring us in good ale.Bring us in no beef, for there is many bones,But bring us in good ale, for that goeth down at once. And Bring us in good aleBring us in no bacon, for that is passing fat,But Bring us in good ale, and give us enough of that,And Bring us in good ale.Bring us in no mutton, for that is often lean,Nor bring us in no tripes, for they are seldom clean. But Bring us in good ale.Bring us in no eggs, for there are many shells,But bring us in good ale, and give us nothing else,But Bring us in good ale.Bring us in no capon’s flesh, for that is often dear,Nor bring us in no duck’s flesh, for they slobber in the mere,But Bring us in good ale.

John Rutter’s 10 Essential WorksFrom the familiar to the obscure, Classic FM guides you through the very best of John Rutter.

1. RADIANT LYRICISM - For The Beauty Of The EarthThe ultimate Rutter miniature: meticulously crafted, melodically inspired, harmonically radiant and beautifully written for the voice.

2. HARMONIC PARADISE - Candlelight CarolComposed in 1984 for the Church of the Assumption in Pittsburgh, Rutter’s most popular original carol setting glows with inner peace.

3. EXQUISITE JOURNEY - RequiemRutter’s Requiem is an enraptured seven-part meditation on man’s journey from life to death.

4. UPLIFTING CELEBRATION - GloriaWritten in 1974, the Gloria offsets two outer movements of uncontainable joy against a more reflective central section. 6. INSPIRED SETTINGS - FanciesA cycle of six settings that stunningly recaptures the sense of whimsical imagination of the English madrigalists of the 16th century.
