Don’t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl. April 12, 2015 Dear Friends, Happy Easter! As we celebrate this joyful season, I invite you to consider the symbol of Easter, prominently placed on the altar—the Paschal (Easter) Candle. If you have never taken time to look closely at or consider the significance of our Easter candle, I invite you to take a minute and do just that. The candle, which is new each year, is more than decoration. It has very specific and meaningful markings. In the center is a cross, etched into the candle with five grains of incense inserted to represent the five wounds of Christ. Above and below the cross is the Alpha and Omega (the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet) indicating that Christ is the beginning and the end. The four digits of the current year are marked on the candle, between the arms of the cross—a good reminder that Christ is present with us today. Fr. Rowan first lit this candle from the new fire at the Easter Vigil, surrounded by the community, including those waiting to receive their Sacraments of Initiation. As he lit the candle, he said this prayer, “May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.” On seeing the Easter Candle when I enter the church, I always try to repeat that prayer. The candle will remain on the altar, and be lit at all of our liturgies throughout the Easter Season. Following Pentecost and for the remainder of the year, it will be placed near the baptismal font and lit at every baptism, symbolizing baptism as a death and resurrection in Christ. In a similar way, the lit candle is placed near the casket or cremated remains at funerals, testifying to our Christian certainty in the resurrection of the dead, and reminding us that all are alive in the risen Christ. At the Easter Vigil, all in attendance carried a small candle. From the Easter Candle, Father Rowan lit a small candle and began sharing this light with those around him. The flame spread from one person to another until the darkened church was glowing with light. The light of the Easter candle should remind us always to walk as children of the Light and to be the light of Christ to the world. Just as our collective flames lit up the church at the Easter Vigil, we, as a community of faith-filled believers can light up our neighborhood, workplace and community with that same light. At Baptism, we received the light of Christ. This Easter season let’s joyfully share it with others. Happy Easter, Indeed! Marti Lundberg Save the Date!
