    In 1935, the University of Warsaw was renamed in honor of theleader of the Second Polish Republic, Jzef Klemens Pisudski(18671935). Most Polish universities at that time attempted toinstitute segregated seating for their Jewish students. This card,issued shortly before a trip abroad, became the only documentavailable to Alfred Tarski to establish his identity upon hisarrival to the United States in 1939, since Polish consularservices had been suspended following the Nazi invasion ofPoland and the start of the Second World War.

    Hans Lewy, who had edGermany in 1933, receiveda formal communicationfrom the Dekan (Dean) of theDepartment of Mathematics atthe University of Gttingen laterthat year, while he was alreadyin the United States. The letterformalized his dismissal fromacademic life, stating: Theministrys directive accordingto which youas well as mostnon-aryan lecturers who werefurloughed last semesterarebeing deprived of your licenseto teach bears the date ofSeptember 11, 1933U.I. Nr.17541. The Department hasmerely been informed of thedirective; the notication to thepersons in question has beencarried out in a more directmanner.

    Immediately after receiving a PhD in physical chemistry (University of Breslau) in 1912, Ottohad joined Albert Einstein at the University of Prague and then followed him to the UniversityZurich where he becamePrivatdozent of Physical Chemistry at the Eidgenssische TechnischeHochschule (ETH Zurich) in 1913. The Swiss institution awarded him an Honorary Doctorate1960, in recognition of his work which appeals to us due to his deep understanding of classicmolecular physics, a eld in which he developed the brilliant method of molecular rays, whicpossible the rst measurement of the magnetic momentum of the proton, and which directed hfundamental questions regarding the structure of elementary particles.
