Directions: Each slide will contain the picture of animal scat for you to identify. The following slide will contain the name of the animal who left the scat and some hints for identifying.
Animal Scat

Rabbit: Round, fibrous pellets about ¼ of an inch wide.

Gray Tree Squirrel: oval pellets a little larger then a grain of rice. A slight tail of more fibrous materials may be present on one end.

Fox: Fox have small, dog like scat that can contain fur and bones. Scat tapers off at one end. Both gray and red fox scat is approximately 2 inches long.

Fisher: Fisher leave 2 inch long scat that may contain fur and bone. Look for nearby tracks to determine if it is a fox or fisher scat.

Coyote: Coyote scat has the typical canine appearance. Scat is approximately 3 inches long. Fur and bones may be present in the scat.

Bobcat: Bobcat scat is approximately 3 inches long and has the typical carnivore appearance. Bobcats will burry their scat so look for scratching patterns in the snow to identify if scat may be present.

Deer: Deer scat is approximately ½ inch long fibrous pellets. Deer scat is very common along deer trails.

Mink: Mink scat is dark and 1 inch long. Feathers, fish scales, or fur may be present.

Turkey: Wild turkey scat is small, cylindrical, and blunt on the ends. It can be composed of vegetable matter and insect parts.

Ruffed Grouse: Ruffed grouse scat is oblong, rounded at the ends, and slightly curved. The Scat consists of fibrous plant material.
