You Be The Chemist is a program available to students in grades K-8 designed to encourage interest in the sciences. Created by the Chemical Educational Foundation and sponsored by the National Association of Chemical Distributors, this program, offered at no cost to elementary and middle schools in the US, needs volunteers and sponsors to expand into new schools in Florida.

Consider sponsoring and/or offering to contact your local schools to introduce this program. For elementary schools, a flash drive costing $10 contains content for fun and easy chemistry experiments using common household ingredients age appropriate for grades K-4 and 5-8. Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate in the You Be The Chemist Challenge, a fun quiz-type event held at county, state and national levels now celebrating its 10th year with over 30 states participating in 2014. The Florida Chapter and the Sunscreen Symposium A Brief History…. Past, Present and Future

by Marisa Bailey with Contributions by Ed Leonard, Mary Lou Doepker and National SCC

The Florida Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists came to fruition in December of 1983 when The

Society of Cosmetic Chemists national office approved a petition for forming a Florida Chapter. In April

of 1984 the first inaugural meeting was held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl with Wendell Otto as Chair, Mary Lou

Doepker - Chair Elect, Audrey Payne-Browne - Secretary, Tim Meadows - Treasurer, Paul Posten was in

charge of membership and Ed Leonard in charge of hospitality. Other board members during the

establishment of the Florida Chapter included Diana Smith, Janet Bowling, Tim Quick, and several

Dermatologists and Doctors. After about a decade of chapter meetings and continuing educational

seminars the chapter continued to grow and the leadership at the time, headed by Ed Leonard, felt the

need for Florida to have a stronger presence in the sunscreen industry. This was particularly important

because Florida was considered the sunscreen capital since there were enough Cosmetic Companies who

were key players in the sunscreen industry such as Key West Aloe, Hawaiian Tropic, Beach Buff, Native

Tan, Sub Tropic Caribbean Breeze, Banana Boat, and several other small contract manufacturers of

sunscreens. Hence, the Sunscreen Symposium was created to give industry leaders a chance to come

together to discuss technological advancements in the sun care industry. The symposium has grown

tremendously over the years from about 125 attendees in the early years to over 400 attendees present day

and attracting national and world renowned industry leaders and FDA representatives. Putting together

the Sunscreen Symposium didn’t always go as smoothly as planned, in the year 2000 the Sunscreen

Symposium had to be canceled two days before the symposium due to the unfortunate events of 9/11.

As the Sunscreen Symposium continues to grow and provide information to the industry in technological

advancements and the latest regulatory updates, the Florida Chapter pledges to continue to seek the best

the industry has to offer in order to be of best benefit to our fellow chemists and industry leaders. Enjoy

this trip down memory lane with a few pics from past Sunscreen Symposiums and Chapter Meetings.
