SCHEDULE OF CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES FOR 2020 Make lasting memories and bridge the generation gap by enjoying three days and two nights on the beautiful Michigan State University campus while learning side by side with your grandchild(ren) during the 15th anniversary of Grandparents University. SCHEDULE OF CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES FOR 2020

Make lasting memories and bridge the generation gap by enjoying three days and two nights on the beautiful Michigan State University campus while learning side by side with your grandchild(ren) during the 15th anniversary of Grandparents University.

Registration will open Wednesday, March 4 at 10 a.m. EST. Prior to registering, please review all details on the registration page at alumni.msu.edu/grandparents.

Some classes will offer multiple sessions throughout the three-day event. While every effort is made to ensure no changes happen, unforeseen circumstances may lead to a class cancellation or rescheduling. If this happens to a class you are registered for, you will be asked to pick a new class or be assigned to one with open seats.

SESSION 1: TUESDAY, JUNE 30[100] A Basketball Player, Alien Monster and Wonder Woman Got on a Bus: Fiction Writing through Games 25 Participants

This is a game designed to push people’s imagination and creativity by giving writing genres, spark words, scenarios and other prompts to get folks writing. Participants will also create a book cover for their new text and have the opportunity to share their stories with others.

[101] A Smashing Time with Nuclei24 Participants

See MSU’s National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, a world-leading nuclear research facility. Get hands-on with a model “nucleus” to learn how and why we smash nuclei at half the speed of light, then tour the lab and find out what will change at the upcoming Facility for Rare Isotope Beams!

[102] Be A Spartan Archaeologist For A Day 30 Participants

Learn how archaeologists use maps, photographs and artifacts to study ancient and historic sites. Participants will work in small groups to unravel the secrets of several different archaeological sites that MSU faculty and students have excavated around the world.

[103] Build a Science Center30 Participants

Imagine a science center where you can see an exhibit, play with it, experiment with it, break it, repair it, rebuild it, improvise it, make a copy and take it home. Now, imagine that the entire science center is built by students like YOU.

[104] Cake and Cookie Decorating14 Participants

MSU Bakers invites you to learn to decorate your very own cake and cookies! Learn simple decorating techniques like how to fill and ice a cake, as well as some fun designs you can do on your own!

[105] Calming and Relaxation25 Participants

Life gets busy and pretty hectic sometimes, wouldn’t it be nice to know some ways to keep calm and take a moment for yourself? In this class we will discuss different methods for relaxation, including breathing techniques and even some laughter, all to help you through those tough moments. We will also make relaxing calming jars that you can take with you for those times when you just need to unwind. We will then end our class with a muscle relaxation technique that will leave you feeling refreshed and renewed.

[106] Chocolate Culture and Creativity24 Participants

A delicious lesson on everyone’s favorite treat, better known as chocolate. Come and learn fun facts in this tasty hands-on session. Participants will taste a variety of chocolates as well as make tootsie rolls and decorate pretzels.

[107] Communicating Across Generations20 Participants

Improve your intergenerational communication through fun and interactive classroom activities. This low-tech experience will give you the opportunity to discover your own strengths and identify strengths in others, regardless of age.

[108] Disney Trivia 25 Participants

Fun for all ages! Jeopardy style game that is all about Disney! Work as a team to solve the answers. Participants will receive goodie bags and the winning team will earn a prize in addition to bragging rights.

[109] Intro to Mindful Meditation 15 Participants

Explore the topic of mindful meditation and learn some beginning breathing exercises. Breathing skills can be used for stress management in many situations. Participants will begin to build their mindfulness muscles on a path toward an increased sense of peace and calm.

[110] Engineering Design with Popsicle Sticks and Tape40 Participants

An introduction to engineering design is provided through dialogue, the concept of design goals and hands-on activities. All participants will use their ingenuity to build a tower of popsicle sticks and tape, illustrating engineering design processes.

Come see displays of insects from around the world as well as have the opportunity to see, touch and hold live insects, tarantulas and scorpions.

[113] Curious Crew Investigation: Exploring Energy in Motion50 ParticipantsInvestigate kinetic energy through hands-on activities. Join WKAR and members of the Curious Crew as they teach participants the power of energy in motion.

[114] Exploring Our Forests!24 Participants

Explore the Sanford Natural Area, a very special forest on MSU’s campus. Participants will learn how to identify common trees found within the forest and understand how the trees and other plants and animals interact in one ecosystem.

[115] Geocaching in the MSU Horticulture Gardens25 Participants

Learn the basics of the popular worldwide hobby of geocaching while touring the beautiful MSU Horticulture Gardens. You will learn what geocaching is all about and how to operate a basic GPS unit. We will then find up to five geocaches. Basic loaner Garmin’s will be provided, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it. Note this class requires a lot of walking and is designed for those who have never geocached before or are new to the activity.

[116] Gotta Eat ‘Em All: Predators vs. Prey 30 ParticipantsMasters of disguise, sharp weapons, impenetrable shields, nasty poisons and more! Join us for an immersive learning experience about fierce predators and wily prey. Through hands-on activities, we’ll investigate the extreme tricks that animals use to navigate their way through everyday life. Meet some real-life predators and prey, and at the end of the class, you can design your own fantastical creature to take home!

[117] History of Indigenous American Agriculture30 Participants

Join W.J. Beal curator, Peter Carrington, in an exploration of the huge advances in plant cultivation and breeding made by the Indigenous First Nations People. From sunflowers to Maize, world agriculture would not be nearly as rich as we know it today without the contributions of our original North American cultures.

[118] How to Change the World in 30 Days30 Participants

How often have you watched the news and thought, “that shouldn’t happen!” or “if I ruled the world, I would...” This 90-minute class is your chance to identify a law or government policy that you want to change and be a key policy maker to make it happen. Participants will leave with an action plan and/or a letter to a policy maker. **You are welcome to bring a tablet or laptop to this class to help with letter writing. (Phones aren’t really useful.) Those who don’t bring a laptop or tablet will engage in the time-honored tradition of writing a postcard by hand.

[119] Improve your Physical Therapy IQ30 Participants

Discover how physical therapists help people improve their ability to move, perform daily activities, recover from injury and live a healthy, active lifestyle. Get up and get active! Learn and perform treatments commonly used in physical therapy for a variety of medical conditions.

[120] Instrument Explorers24 Participants

Do you know how to make a sound on the saxophone? Why the bassoon has many keys but the trumpet only has a few? Are your arms long enough to play the trombone? Answer all your questions in this session on different instruments. Participants will explore woodwind, brass and percussion instruments through hands-on activities.

[121] Air Gun32 Participants

In this course participants will have hands-on experience shooting an Olympic-style air rifle and air pistol. The session includes a safety briefing and an introductory to shooting fundamentals.

[122] Archery 22 Participants

Class will begin with a quick safety briefing and each person will be fitted with the proper safety gear and archery equipment. The MSU Archery Team will be instructing on the proper form for archery.

[123] Superheroes Leading Tomorrow 25 Participants

Learn about leadership skills while making a superhero! Each student will transform themselves into a superhero with special powers. After creating a hero, students will talk about what makes them a leader in their everyday life.

[125] Make a Basket 12 Participants

Learn about traditional basketry by making a basket. We will make a simple letter or napkin basket using under and over weaving with reed.

[126] Microscope Guessing Game16 Participants

Have you wondered how everyday objects look up close? Or do you wonder how Velcro works, why wool sweaters are so itchy or why some leaves feel fuzzy? In the Microscope Guessing Game, you’ll have the chance to answer those questions as you try to identify objects in a Scanning Electron Microscope at high magnification.

[127] Pickleball for Families24 Participants

Participants will learn the fundamental rules and strategies for Pickleball. The book “Smart Pickleball” will be provided, one copy per family.

[128] Pointillism: Painting With Dots20 Participants

Pointillism, created in the 1800’s, is a painting technique using small dots of pure color to compose an entire painting. Students will learn the art of painting with dots by doing practice painting and then creating their own original painting to take home.

[129] Science on a Sphere (MSU Museum) 25 Participants

Join the MSU Museum in exploring life at the bottom of the ocean, using Science on a Sphere. Participants will have the chance take part in hands-on demonstrations, create model deep-sea animals and touch real specimens. Throughout the session, you will learn about the Science on the Sphere technology.

[130] Spartan Nursing 101: Simulation, Stethoscopes and Syringe Water Fights!30 Participants

Experience being a Spartan Nurse in the simulation lab and learn how to take vital signs, listen to lung sounds and insert a NG tube. Race against participants in a scavenger hunt of the lab, meeting some of our skills task trainers including Trach Jake, Surgical Sally, Chester Chest and of course, our favorite patient, HAL - a simulation manikin that breathes, blinks and even talks as you provide nursing care! Learn fast, or you might be the most unfortunate victim of the syringe water fight! These are just a few of the activities you may experience while working as a spartan nurse-in-training in an environment that looks and feels like a hospital!

[131] Theatre Games and Improvisation40 Participants

Participants will engage in very user friendly, fun and engaging theatre games. Activities are simple, enjoyable and guarantee laughs and a good time. It’s a great way for grandparents and their grandkids to engage with one another.

[132] Thy Praises, MSU: Traditions Past and Present45 Participants

Michigan State has a long history of interesting traditions. We will explore some of the customs that have defined the Spartan student experience over time. While this session focuses on traditions, it is far from traditional!

[133] Translating Interests Into Careers100 Participants

Turn your passions into a career. Participants will interpret their interests and learn how they apply to the professional world. They will discover how to focus their education and choices to align with a future career path.

[134] Traveling the World to ‘See’ Your Nutrients 50 Participants

The structure and function of nutrients can be explained using analogies of places around the world. The session will explore proteins and mosaics in a cathedral in Italy; carbohydrates at the Great Wall of China; calcium at the White Cliffs of Dover, England; Sulfur at Mostar Bridge, Bosnia; and vitamin B6 in Michigan to name a few.

[135] University Archives Behind-The-Scenes Tour20 Participants

During this behind the scenes tour of the University Archives, participants will be able to look at scrapbooks, photographs, diaries and other historical items from the 1860s through the 1980s. This is a unique opportunity to see gems of the Archives’ collections, to tour areas of the Archives not typically accessible to visitors and to meet and talk with the University’s archivists who care for over 160 years of MSU history.

[136] Watercolor Painting on Cold Press Paper26 Participants

Learn the art of watercolor painting with easy techniques for all ages to enjoy. You will leave this class with framed art to show off to your family.

[137] We Are Stars Planetarium Show140 Participants

What are we made of? Where did it all come from? Explore the secrets of our cosmic chemistry, and our explosive origins. Connect life on Earth to the evolution of the Universe by following the formation of Hydrogen atoms to the synthesis of Carbon, and the molecules for life. Narrated by Andy Serkis.

[138] What Does Your Sustainable Future Look Like?30 ParticipantsPut your creativity and imagination to the test while creating a vision board that highlights elements of your ideal sustainable future. You will learn about actions you can take to make your vision a reality and explore issues that impact the planet such as biodiversity, natural resources, waste and sustainable buildings.

[139] Where Does Milk Come From?25 ParticipantsTour the MSU Dairy Teaching and Research Center and learn all about how dairy cows provide us with healthy dairy products. You will get to milk a cow and see inside our famous cows with a window in their stomach. MSU ice cream is provided at the end of the tour!

[140] Where Does Our Food Come From? The Amazing Honey Bee40 ParticipantsA large portion of the world food supply is directly or indirectly affected by honey bee pollination. We’ll learn about the honey bee, their impact on our food supply and how we can help this amazing insect!

[141] Building Your Ideal Neighborhood40 ParticipantsThis activity-based session will look at how the availability of resources impact communities. In teams, participants will build their own communities using Legos and other materials supplied. Each team will have different materials or “resources” available to them. Following the “building” phase, communities will be compared and an interactive discussion will take place.

[142] Vermicomposting: Fun With Worms30 ParticipantsParticipants in this class should expect to learn the basics of composting, with worms! Using red wigglers learn how a worm can eat their weight in food waste each day. Learn how to make a habitat for worms and how to vermicompost at home to divert from the landfill and produce great organic fertilizer!

[143] Harry Potter and the Secrets of British English50 ParticipantsHarry Potter is a young wizard whose adventures have been enjoyed by people across the globe. Harry was brought to life by a British author who incorporated aspects of British life into the story. Learn about some of Harry’s culture and vocabulary, and the reasons why American English and British English have become different over time.

See how MSU’s Landscape Services cares for the trees on campus on this walking tour. Explore some of the equipment our arborists use and see them in action.

All participants will use their ingenuity to build a structure of popsicle sticks and tape illustrating the engineering design processes.

[210] Experience the Wonder of Migratory Birds50 ParticipantsAre you curious about our amazing feathered friends? Join us to learn about the fantastic adaptations of migratory birds and avian research at Michigan State! Participants will observe the entire process of bird banding and release a wild bird from their hand. This session takes place off campus. A bus will provide transporation to the venue.

[214] Go Green! Go Wild! Planting Campus Natively!30 ParticipantsWalk through campus discovering the native plants around you. Participants will learn about the role native plants play for supporting pollinators, managing stormwater and impacting invasive species. At the end of the class, you’ll get a native plant to take home. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes.

[215] Got Violin?! It’s a Cool Tool! 18 ParticipantsEver wanted your grandchild to learn the violin? In the time of the class period you and your grandchild will learn the basics of the instrument and leave with some music to take with you!

[216] How Do Pianos Work? An Introduction to Piano Technology 18 Participants Learn the basic principles of piano design and construction, the physical properties of sound (acoustics) and how the components inside pianos create sound!

[218] Innovating, Prototyping and Creating 30 Participants Prototyping is a designer’s practice where quick sketches, drawings and wireframes are developed for an idea, app or product. In this session, we’ll talk about why designers prototype. We’ll do some brainstorming and prototyping together to create a new, interactive app — an ice cream finder!

[219] Air Gun32 ParticipantsIn this course participants will have hands-on experience shooting an Olympic-style air rifle and air pistol. The session includes a safety briefing and an introductory to shooting fundamentals.

[223] Make Your Own Book! 16 Participants Create books the way artists do — by hand! We’ll start by looking at some very unusual books in MSU’s collection. Then, we’ll make three different book structures and decorate them!

[226] Pizza 101: How to Play With Your Food50 ParticipantsParticipants of this session will see a demonstration on how to prepare and handle pizza dough and different methods of baking. Then they will get to prepare their own pizza!

Our session will go behind the scenes of the Olympics to learn about the athletes, fans and secrets of the event. Participants will build their own model sports stadium in our design studio.

[231] Spartan Dollars and Cents 30 Participants Let’s talk money! Through fun, hands-on activities, we will explore the world of finances and increase your money smart knowledge.

[232] Translating Interests Into Careers30 ParticipantsTurn your passions into a career. Participants will interpret their interests and learn how they apply to the professional world. They will discover how to focus their education and choices to align with a future career path.

[233] Travel Without Technology25 ParticipantsHave you ever wondered how people ever went somewhere without GPS? Do you think you could find your way around road construction using just a map? In this class you will learn how to read a Rand McNally Road Atlas, reach destinations using maps, use tools to plan a road trip and receive take home material to use on your next adventure.

[234] Tricking Your Brain: Memory and Attention Illusions 30 Participants In this session, we will demonstrate how your brain can be tricked, and do experiments to see whether children or adults’ brains are more easily fooled. Participants will learn about how psychologists study attention and memory, and how you can improve your skills at any age!

[235] Ultrasonography With Sheep: Is She Pregnant?13 Participants Ultrasonography is a technique that gives doctors and veterinarians a “live-stream” view into the body. It is commonly used during pregnancy to look inside mom and make sure the developing baby is healthy. Come join us in this unique session where you will be able to see what the veterinarian sees and participate in ultrasound exams on pregnant sheep.

[236] Unlocking Your Creativity20 ParticipantsThe arts are a great way to increase your creativity skills and have fun! This fast-paced session will feature a variety of activities and exercises incorporating music, movement, acting and the written word. Discover your inner artist and unlock your creativity!

[237] Visualizing Proteins10 ParticipantsLearn how protein structure information is generated in a hands-on course. Participants will look at the different ways for viewing protein molecules, including demonstrations in 3D.

Music in the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden100 ParticipantsEach summer, the MSU College of Music hosts a free concert series called “Music in the Garden.” The W. J. Beal Botanical Garden plays host to select student groups presented by the MSU College of Music. These 1-hour concerts happen rain or shine (rain location is the Music Building, 333 W. Circle Drive), and the MSU Food Truck and free Dairy Store ice cream (while supplies last) are on site for the audience to enjoy while they listen to the music! Join us with your blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music and garden flora!

Archaeology30 ParticipantsParticipants will be able to learn about how archaeologists study and interpret ancient and historic sites using maps, photographs, and artifacts. They will work in small groups to unravel the secrets of several different archaeological sites that MSU faculty and students have excavated around the world.

Tennis30 ParticipantsCome and visit the MSU Tennis Center for a one hour on court tennis experience. The Tennis Center professionals will be putting you through the paces with some on court basic instruction, drills and games. Participants will be grouped according to age. Feel free to bring your own tennis racket or you can borrow one of the demo rackets available.

Intro to Mindfulness Meditation15 ParticipantsExplore the topic of mindful meditation and learn some beginning breathing exercises. Breathing skills can be used for stress management in many situations. Participants will begin to build their mindfulness muscles on a path toward an increased sense of peace and calm.

Make & Take MSU Bracelet15 participantsThis activity will offer the participants to create an MSU bracelet. There will be 2 styles to choose from, with MSU letter beads, green and white beads with silver and crystal bead accents, also sport themed beads, football, basketball, soccer, baseball and tennis ball beads.

Origami – Explore the Japanese Art of Folding Paper 20 ParticipantsOrigami is the traditional Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures. In addition to being a fun and accessible art form, origami is also believed to aid the development of hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, mental concentration and patience. In this workshop we will learn about the history of origami, discuss the benefits of origami practice and experience creating origami together with hands-on tutorials.
