The Future is Looking Bright

Twenty students of the Class of 2016 received Alumni Scholarships

“Thank you” cannot be said often enough for the dedication to giving young people opportunity for their futures, but the THS

Alumni Association would like to thank all the alumni and community members for their support.

Thirty-four percent of students in the Class of 2016 received an Alumni Scholarship this past May. Twenty scholarships that

amounted to $15,000 were awarded. This brings the total number of scholarships awarded by the Alumni Foundation since 1989 to

416, valued at $289,400.

Along with the above named scholarships, the Alumni Association, through the foundation, also awards a $500 grant to the high

school Close-Up Program and awards a grant to a teacher-administrator of the school system through the Karaffa Excellence Award.

Commemorative contributions are received by the Association each year from donors who want to honor or memorialize class-

mates, teachers, family or friends. These, along with individual gifts to the scholarship fund, show that good things can happen by

starting off in a small way and can grow to give back to the community. The young people graduating and who will graduate are the

future of this community and our country. The Alumni Association Board of Directors would like to recognize the efforts of the

Foundation Committee, which is chaired by Christine Cattrell Hargrave ’65, for the past twenty-five years. Her committee of dedi-

cated alumni, teachers and administrators work endless hours each spring in the selection process and to maintain that all is in com-

pliance with IRS requirements. Thanks, Christine and foundation members, for volunteering your time to see that 416 students have

received an opportunity for additional education, thus brightening the future of this city.

Trinity Health System in honor of Dr. Shaffer. Blaze is attending Sinclair College to pursue a degree in health care management and

$500 funded by a gift from the estate of Bill and Betty Davis. Lindsey is attending Eastern Gateway Community College.

ALUMNOTES

The following story was submitted by John Wallach ‘57.

A Lifetime Achievement Award was recently awarded to Dave Wallach ‘61 by the University of Findley at their 2016 Athletic Hall of Fame Program. He is only the fourth recipient of this award in the forty-six years of the athletic depart-ment program.

Dave received his degrees from Wright State University and then Rutgers Univer-sity. He joined the Math Department fac-ulty at the University of Findley in 1984. During his career he received many hon-ors and much recognition in the mathe-matics field. At UF, he served as chair of the Division of Math and Computer Sci-ences, taught nearly every math course offered, developed the Concepts and Foundations course and was co-originator of Mathematics Day.

In addition to his teaching responsibili-ties, Wallach was a loyal supporter of all Oilers athletic programs. From 1987 until 2002 he served as the faculty athletic rep-resentative overseeing student-athlete eligibility and reviewing transcripts of transfer students.

Dave loved attending UF athletic events, at home and away, and was espe-cially enthusiastic at basketball games. He was recognized by the UF Athletic Department and basketball team in 2008 for his support, with the presentation of a basketball signed by all of the coaches and players. His photo hangs behind the bleachers as a reminder to the UF team, the opponents and the referees that he is still cheering and watching.

Dave passed away in March 2008.

Shall We Gather? On Saturday, September 10th, three counties have joined to give folks an opportunity to cruise the Ohio river, en-joy a lovely luncheon and hear Chad Pregracke, 2013 CNN Hero of the Year and founder of “Living Lands and Wa-ters.”

Some special guests on the excursion are 25 children (two from area high schools and 23 fifth through eighth graders). Each child was chosen to go by submit-ting an essay about “The Ohio River.” Some wrote about how they played there. Some wrote about the river’s condition, good and bad. Some wrote about how the river could be improved for more recreational use. There were 62 submis-sions for the younger children’s prizes. Of those, more than half came from To-ronto Schools. As alums, we should offer our “atta girls” to teachers (and alums) Linda (Chesney) Glenn ‘86 and Marlene (Graham) Wolfe ‘for encourag-ing this significant participation.

Perhaps because Toronto has several good places to access the river, the Toronto kids had first hand experiences there and wrote about their visits to the river with “Pap” or friends or siblings. Some of the essays were poignant, some very creative (suggesting an underwater hotel or a moon pool) and some were very practical (If I had $1 million, how would I improve the river?).

Because our company (Cattrell Compa-nies) sponsored the tickets for each child plus one chaperone, I was asked to help judge the essay contest. I was very proud to find how many students of To-ronto schools had an interest and got involved in the contest. One essay by Zoe Clapham* was the number one choice of all four judges (who read the essays separately). It is rewarding to know, as an alumna, that our schools are still producing an amazing education for Toronto’s children.

*Zoe is the daughter of Carrie Clapham ‘98, grandaughter of Charles and Cheryl Boggs ‘75 Clapham and great-grandaughter of long time THS teachers Gail and Dolores Boggs.

Cindy Hinerman Receives Karaffa Award for Excellence in Education

Cindy Hinerman was the 2016 recipient of the Joseph and Anna Marie Karaffa Award for Excel-lence in Education. Mrs. Hinerman has worked in the Toronto City School District since 2000. She has worked as an instructional aide, Title I teacher, read-ing teacher and currently serves as the Success For All Reading Facilitator at Karaffa Elementary School. Mrs. Hinerman received her Bachelor’s De-gree in Elementary Education from Franciscan Uni-versity of Steubenville and her Master’s Degree in Special Education from West Virginia University. Mrs. Hinerman received numerous nominations for the award from current students and colleagues. Susan Karaffa Schnell ‘74, daughter of Joseph and Anna Marie Karaffa ’42/46 said, “Common threads in all the nominations received for Mrs. Hinerman are that she cares deeply about students; goes above and beyond to help students, parents, and colleagues; wears many hats; and always wants to do more, without recognition or compensation.” According to one nominator, “Learning is so important, but you need someone who can spark that want and interest in a child’s mind. Mrs. Hinerman has encouraged so many children to reach for higher goals for themselves rather than taking another path.” The Joseph and Anna Marie Karaffa Award for Excellence in Education is presented annually to a teacher or administrator active in Toronto City Schools. The award was established to recognize the efforts of an outstanding teacher or administrator for creat-ing an environment where teaching and learning is valued. Past recipients include: Kirk George (2015), Sally George (2015), Jane Brower (2013), Jennifer Dickinson (2012), Donna McCasland (2011), Ellen Hughes (2010), Mary Jo Kuhn (2009), Lynda Glenn (2008), Charlene Starr (2007), Linda Blair (2006), Linda Antonucci (2005), Gary Fisher (2004), Maureen Taggart (2003), James Ray (2002), Susan Buckham (2001), Barbara Carter (2000), Kirk George (1999), and Barbara Pritts (1998). Nominations for the award were accepted from students, teachers, administrators, parents, and alumni.
