In the spirit of justice,
reconciliation and love… St Gabriel’s School
acknowledges the Kaurna
People, the traditional custo-
dians of this land and we pay
our respects to the Elders
both past, present and future
for they hold the memories,
the traditions, the cultures
and hopes of
Australia’s Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander
peoples.
As part of our learning about
Time, students used their
prior knowledge to make
clocks using recycled materi-
als. We know that there are
two different types of
clocks—analogue and digital, a
clock face has an hour hand
and a minute hand and that
there are 12 numbers on an
analogue clock face.
As part of our ongoing learning
about ATSI culture, we have lis-
tened to the story Tjilbruke and
created art works inspired by the
story on canvas. The story tells of
the creation of birds and fish of
the coast. Students drew these
creatures and pasted them on a sky
and sea background.
At the moment, we have
two special guests in our
unit. They have many
common names: Giant
Prickly Stick Insect, Spiny
Leaf insect, Macleay's
Spectre, or Australian
Walking Stick. It is a
large species of stick in-
sect and it is native to
Australia. Every week their
water and the eucalypt
leaves they eat have to be
changed.
First , we go out and pick
the leaves. Then we take
the spiny leaf insect out
while we change the water
and put in new leaves.
Next, we put the insects
back in. We also have to
spray the leaves with wa-
ter twice a day. You are
welcome to come and visit
them.

Dear Parents, Students and Caregivers Holidays are just a week away. How I love those holiday mornings not having to try and get lunches ready and find uniforms at the bottom of the ironing pile. Whilst the term is not over, can I please take this moment to extend a huge thanks and appreciation to the many members of the community who have helped make this term another great experience. Sports for Justice - On Wednesday 9th Septem-
ber, we celebrated National Health & PE Day
with a range of activities, including games and
the annual Student VS Teacher Sports event.
This year the teachers kept the Year 7 students
under pressure and a narrow victory to the teach-
ers…. The big winner was celebrating the importance of sport,
health and wellbeing in students learning and lives. The Health &
PE curriculum are an important aspect of student learning
throughout the year. These formal curriculum areas are supported
by a number of programs such as Made in the Image of God, Child
Protection and Social & Emotional Learning. Daily fitness, Media-
tion, Brain Breaks and encouraging healthy eating are all further
ways we support encouraging healthy habitats and lifestyles for
students.
Wear White Day – On Monday 21st September we will be celebrating the International Day of Peace with a ‘Wear White” Day. Students are invited to wear white clothes for a gold coin dona-tion or they can simply wear their normal school uniform. The money raised will support Catholic Charities who provide support and care to various catholic organisations. One of those supported by Catholic Charities is the Mercy House of Welcome located at Kilburn. Social Justice Statement – Each year the Australian
Bishops publish a Social Justice Statement. This
year the statement is called For Those Who've Come
Across the Seas - Justice for refugees and asylum seeker.
In this Social Justice Statement the Australia’s Bishops ask us to re-examine our responses to refugees and asylum seekers. The State-ment reminds us of the nearly 60 million people around the world who are displaced from their homes and of the war and violence that are devastating countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. When people come to us seeking refuge, can we in conscience re-spond to them with cruel and self-defeating policies such as off-shore processing and indefinite detention?
This Social Justice Statement is inspired by the example of Pope
Francis on his 2013 visit to the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa,
where he met the survivors of a refugee tragedy and mourned and
prayed for those who had died.
http://www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au/publications/social-
justice-statements
As we take up the challenge and call of Pope Francis’ call to open
our hearts we pray… With deep humility and a heart hungry for justice,
we pray that we Australians, citizens and leaders, Open our eyes, our
minds and our hearts, that we may see, understand and welcome our
brothers and sisters.
Festival Choir – Next Thursday evening our Sen-ior Choir will sing at the Festival Theatre as a part of the Catholic Schools Music Festival. The night is a celebration of song and music and the hard work and dedication of our Year 6/7 students who have worked so hard for the last three terms un-der the leadership of Ms Riley. Thank you and congratulations to all of the students and our appreciation to Ms Riley for all her work and support. Sports Day – Next Friday 25th September, we will be holding our annual Sports Day at Harrier’s Oval. The oval is at St Albans Reserve, Clearview, (just up from the Good Shepherd Church.) Information has been sent home on our last two Catholic Charities Flyers and another flyer will be heading home on Monday with key information. We are praying for good weather and an amazing day. We are listening – The School Board has established a week of listening and reflecting upon St Gabriel’s School. We wish to create a number of opportunities for you to contrib-ute your ideas and thoughts about St Gabriel’s School. Heading home on Thursday is a small flyer with more de-tails and information and we welcome your ideas, thoughts and feedback. You can access the online survey https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/yCUvY9zT put a note into the sug-gestion box in the Front Office or Come for a Coffee and Chat - Tuesday 22nd September from 2:30pm and Wednesday 23rd Sep-tember from 9am. We are looking forward to your thoughts and ideas. Regional Green Day Out – Today students from across our North
East region of Catholic School gathered at St Gabriel’s for a
“Green Day Out!” The day provided an opportunity for students
to gather and share ways they are taking up the call to be green at
their schools. As school leaders we are committed to enhancing the
call of Pope Francis to take serious our need to care for creation.

Returning in 2016 and Class Requests We have begun as a staff and School Board to look at the
structures and staffing for next year. A number of im-
portant factors contribute to these decisions. The learning of stu-
dents always remains at the core. A further request is extended to
those families who are leaving St Gabriel’s at the end of this year
to ensure they have returned the form with this information. We
remind families that you are required to give one terms notice if
your child/ren is/are leaving.
In the first newsletter of next term, we will be inviting you to
make recommendations and requests about the placement of your
children. This opportunity is an important one if you wish to put
forward information that will benefit the placement of your child
for next year. The school holidays might be a great time to talk to
your children about who they learn best with. Look out for this
request information in the Week 1 Newsletter next term.
We are moving… We are in the final stages of complet-
ing documentation for the start of our building project.
At this stage we will be moving the village classes next
week. Keep posted for more news.
I hope this term has held many great moments for you and your
children. I am looking forward to next week and the fast ap-
proaching holidays, best wishes from Stuart
