INTRODUCTION

The Churchill War Rooms, under Whitehall, could not have been a more appropriate for the theme of Security, at this year’s SCL conference. All of the feedback post event has confirmed that this was the most successful conference ever. The ‘full house’ on the day emphasised this too. Security is always vital, but as the finance industry wrestles with intense complexity, more determined criminals, a plethora of new payment options and increasing competition, the topic could not be more pertinent. SCL is grateful to the 2015 sponsors: Cash

Management Solutions, Contis, Experian,

International Reference Systems and First Rate

Exchange Services, who helped ensure that the day

was a huge success.

Jon Rankin kicked off the conference with a

look back at surprising events and

anniversaries in 2014. It was a year to

savour for SCL too both at home and

overseas.

New customers included ReiseBank

(Germany), Starwood & Glimcher Malls

(USA) and new UK clients including John

Lewis (through SCL partners First Rate),

Mid Counties Co-Operative Society, The

Travel Network Group and Premier Travel.

It was a great year for UltraPoS Small Business Edition (USBE) too, with over 60 new locations added.

SCL celebrated the successful annual PCI DSS level 1 certification audit and further enhanced its firewalls to keep its customers protected. To round off the year, SCL’s iPad App won a

Paybefore Award for Innovation.

SCL: 2014 REVIEW

ai Corporation’s CEO Mark Goldspink delivered a very popular keynote speech, taking a radical view on risk optimisation, rather than risk minimisation. As ‘Big Data’ explodes, ai has recognised that only 1% of payment data is currently utilised. Mark urged companies to look holistical-ly across their P&L, interrogating the 99% of payment data to produce a ‘Value verses Risk Index’. This requires sophisticated ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) machines, especially if critical management information is to be provided in ‘real-time’.

Pat Roe, SCL’s Sales & Marketing Director, swung the conference towards the coffee break with an outline of the security features built into UltraPoS. These included: User Profiles/hierarchies; password policy/complexity; automatic time-outs to comply with PCI requirements; the new audit viewer functionality; IP range lock-down and card IDs/Proxies. SECURE PROTECTION: THINK ULTRAPOS

JOE’S JOURNEY – A LESSON FOR ALL An entertaining journey, following the life of ‘Joe’ was undertaken by Jonathan Walsh, Head of Consulting at Experian’s Identity & Fraud Division. SCL and Experian have collaborated on system integrations for both Know Your Customer (KYC) and for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) for many years, opening new avenues of protection for SCL customers and are about to enhance the relationship by integrating with Experian’s new ID Hub service. Joe’s life journey covered the period from being a student, meeting the girl of his dreams, getting married, having a family and illustrated the fiscal challenges Joe encountered along the way. It was a

familiar story for most people in the room and highlighted how easy it is to fall into a fraud trap. Follow Joe’s journey by clicking here

NEW: VELOCITY CHECKING

7

There was a palpable excitement in the room when Eddie Sawyers outlined SCL’s plans for a linked transactions velocity checking service. This will be introduced in the Autumn 2015 and as SCL already has such a high proportion of the UK high street travel FX providers in its stable, a national velocity checking service is hopefully a realisable dream. Eddie explained in detail how the service will utilise information such as a value threshold, time periods and customer matching criteria to establish a pattern of suspicious behaviour – or a ‘Hit’. SCL customers will then have the ability to instigate a hard block on that suspicious person’s transactions, or a choice of other actions, such as a prompt for further authorisation.

Eddie showed a typical ‘Hit’ screen which had identified one person using different Dates of Birth, email addresses, phone numbers and a variety of spellings of the same name. It’s obvious that velocity checking is the

future, check-out Eddie’s full presentation

CEO, Ray Stanton treated the conference to a deeper dive into UltraPoS’ security features. Keeping the bad guys out while letting the good guys in, requires multiple levels of protection measures involving hardware, software, process rules and strict procedures. Everyone has heard of Firewalls, but Ray explained how there are 64,000+ access points on each internet address, where criminals can target payment data. SCL continuously monitors its system to stop all known ‘patterns of fraudulent activity’. Additionally, SCL employs a ‘real-time check’ of any scan activity looking for patterns of behaviour and immediately shuts down that access point. Ray went on to explain SCL’s hardware

security model, including the encryption procedures in the UltraPoS iPad App. Finally, Ray looked at the essential processes and procedures used every day to protect SCL’s customer base. Much more detail available by clicking here

KEEPING THE BAD GUYS OUT: A TECHNICAL VIEW

Page 9: SCL Conference 2015: Ebook

Regardless of all the hype about a cashless society, digital wallets, mobile payments and payment watches, the reality is that cash is still king. Andrea Donafee, CEO, Cash Management Systems (CMS) gave a stimulating insight into the pitfalls of handling cash. The high street is experiencing a very volatile marketplace, with constant changes on FX rates, seasonal demand and large events all adding to the complexity. CMS has vast experience of modelling the demand for cash in individual shops or stores, helping to save cost and build optimum efficiencies. Of course, Cash in Transit (CIT) is one of the largest expenses for a retailer or merchant. Additionally, cash sat in a store safe

overnight or all weekend, is clearly a risk as well as potentially costing money. CMS has the answers for forecasting historic trends, shortening lead times, frequency of re-ordering and naturally risk/theft analysis. Take a look at Andrea’s presentation here

Following lunch, Wayne Maraj, Head of Business Development, Contis Group, looked at the experiences gained from having over 4 million cards in circulation and handling solutions for payments online, in-store, for corporate use and for loyalty. One of the most interesting services for Contis is the ‘Suits Me’ card for migrant workers who do not have a UK bank account. Other Contis solutions are specifically for travel money, a specially developed mobile solution and a host of options for payroll services. View Wayne’s full presentation here

One of the highlights of every SCL conference is the results of the annual UltraPoS survey. 2015 was the largest ever with over 700 responses – 80% of which were front-line store users and 20% from those in managerial positions. Fiona Honeyman, Marketing, SCL explained that the system again scored very highly for overall satisfaction; this year an incredible 8 out of 10. Ease of use again came out on top of the favourite things, closely followed by the need to use just one system to complete all FX related actions. Many travel money stores and bureau are facing their stiffest competition ever. One SCL customer has 13 other shops selling travel money within the same area.

So when UltraPoS scores 95% for ‘ease of use and 89% say the system helps them to deliver a high level of customer service, it is no wonder UltraPoS continues to dominate the high street. See the full results in Fiona’s presentation,

Rounding off another exceptional day, Ray Stanton looked at the SCL Roadmap for the rest of 2015. PCI DSS V3 becomes mandatory in June 2015, so SCL is well ahead of the game. Ray also welcomed greater clarity on PCI requirements from the PCI Council. Internally, SCL had undergone a ‘functionality study’ looking at ways to gain maximum efficiency and effectiveness from its staff and their daily activities. A new on-line ordering product will be coming soon, together with adding barcode capability for the SCL iPad App. Finally, a new reporting and analytics product is taking shape during the rest of 2015.
