Pack Trips &MORE

Some of the best fishing anywhere.

Pack Trips

We offer a wide variety of trips to fit your abilities and desires. The trips we offer range from 2 to 10 days. You can do a base camp trip and explore the region around that camp or do a progressive trip

and travel to several new camp sites during your trip. Travel on horses up mountain valleys and across mountain passes, and let the beauty take your breath away. Then set camp next to some of the most pristine lakes and rivers. We ride an average of 4 to 5 hours a day and cover 10 to 15 miles per day.

Our camps are clean and comfortable, sleeping tents are made of wa-terproof canvas and we provide sleeping pads. Solar showers and latrines are available. Canvas flies and tarps will offer shelter from sun and occa-sional rain shower. Sit around the campfire in cozy chairs and enjoy the camaraderie of friends and family, telling jokes and stories of days gone by and hear an occasional cowboy song. Cooks will prepare meals over the fire and on propane stoves and are served family style. Enjoy entreés like steaks, chops, chicken, burgers, and spaghetti for dinner, as well as all the fixings, light appetizers and wine. Breakfasts include bacon, eggs, sausage, pancakes plus many more options. Lunches are usually sack lunches (because we are usually out on the trail exploring).

Horse Supported BackpackingDon’t want to ride horses or pack those heavy backpacking loads, but

still want to explore the wilderness? The this is the trip for you. We pack all your gear on horses, plus set up a nice camp and have the same great meals our horse trips enjoy. We are very accommodating and travel as far or as little as you want to move. You get to enjoy the quietness of the mountains. Guide yourself during the day or have one of our guides walk with you. We will meet at a prearranged destination where camp will be waiting for you. These trips vary from 2 to 10 days. GPS recommended.

Women in the outdoorsThese trips are tailored to women only. Gather up your girlfriends

and join us on any one of the trips we offer. And get spoiled in the back country. Ask about our all women pack trips.

Fly Fishing

We offer fly fishing adventures on some of the most pris-tine back country waters in Northwest Wyoming. Fly or spin fish rivers, streams and lakes for Brown trout, Brook

trout, Cutthroat trout, Golden trout or Rainbow trout. Our knowl-edgeable guides and staff will assist you in having one of the great-est fishing adventures of your life. Gentle horses will carry you and your gear into the back country where we will set up camp next to fabulous blue ribbon trout streams and lakes. (See the pack trip page for more details on the camps and food.) These trips are for the beginner and advanced fisherman. Already know how to fish? We will get you to the water and turn you loose. Of course we will stay close to take pictures of all the big fish you catch. Never fly fished before or not that good at it? That is no problem either, our guides will teach you all you need to know to become a great fly fisherman. We highly recommend catch and release fishing. This sport will become addicting to you if it hasn’t already.

Danny Crawford with a nice bull.

Jerry Crawford with his 5x6 bull.

Monty Williams with his 6x7 bull.

Jay Prosser harvested this beautiful ram.

Will Sherwood with this impressive 6x6 elk.

BIGHORN SHEEP, goats & moose

Bighorn sheep are one of the most presti-gious animals to hunt in Wyoming. Most hunters have many years into gathering

preference points. We don’t take that lightly and understand that this is a once in a life time tag. The guides we hire are proven veteran sheep guides who live and breathe sheep hunting.

We hunt areas 1 thru 5 in northwest Wyo-ming. We access these areas with horses and mules to our spike hunting camps. Hunts are 10 days in length and you will be accompanied by your guide and a cook/wrangler.

Jay Prosser was our only sheep hunter in 2015. He, and guide Buck Porter, headed into area 1 in mid-September. Early in the hunt they caught a glimpse of a real good ram. The next day, and several days later, the ram was nowhere to be seen. But, in sheep hunting per-sistence will pay off, just when you think there is nothing there that is when they will show up. Guides Buck, Rick and Jay had been watching the same slide where they had seen the ram sev-eral days before.

All of a sudden the ram stood up not more than 200 yards from them. With some quick ranging, a steady rest and a perfectly placed shot the ram buckled. Jay had fulfilled his life quest of a Wyoming bighorn sheep.

We also offer moose hunts in area 11 and mountain goat hunts in areas 1 and 3.

We offer 3 seven day archery hunts during the month of September. The dates are 9/3-9/9, 9/12-9/18 and 9/21-9/27. All of these hunts

are very productive and we average 90+% opportu-nity and a 33% kill rate across the board. ( The state average is 12- 15% kill rate.) These are pack-in hunts on horses to our wilderness tent camp. Please see the section on camp for the accommodations.

In 2015 we had 8 archery hunters and killed 6 elk and they were some beauties. Will Sherwood came back again on the first hunt and it didn’t take him long to fill his tag. He and Ethan killed a beautiful 6x6 that scored 331 SCI.

On the second hunt we were joined by Jerry and Danny Crawford. They hunted with me years ago in another camp and decided to join us in Boulder. Ethan was hot and he and Danny scored right away on an awesome 6x6 that scored 333 SCI. Jerry and guide Seth Ballard also found some luck and killed a nice 5x6 bull. John and guide Flint Flesher had sev-eral opportunities and shots but never could connect.

On the third hunt Monty Williams, Doug Decote,

ARCHERY ELKShawn Baker and David Detraz joined us. Shawn and I got things started killing a big 6x6 at 18 yards and getting the whole thing on video - what a fun hunt. Monty and Ethan joined right in as well kill-ing the best bull of the year a 6x7 that scored a 344 SCI. Great job guys! Doug and Seth had a bull come in and Doug thought he had a great placed shot. As you know these animals are tough and we were not able to find the bull. Admirably Doug chose to not hunt any more. Flint and David teamed up and had several really close calls with smaller bulls. Dave chose not to shoot a smaller bull and on the last evening a cow stepped into range and he filled the freezer with some awesome meat.

What a great archery season we had, can’t wait un-til next year!

We offer three 7-day rifle hunts for elk from our wilderness tent camp in October. These

are horseback hunts and are high op-portunity and high success hunts. On the first hunt Keith Hedgecock, Rick Vanderslice, Ben Banks, Brian Rose, Jack Willard, Clint Dryer and Jim Pip-kins joined us for another hunt. The weather started off nice on opening day. Brian and Ben with their guide Ethan got us started by killing 2 bulls opening morning. A couple days later Seth and Clint killed a nice 5x6 bull and Keith and I killed a nice 6x6 way above the timber line. Ethan after filling his first 2 hunters took Rick and they killed a nice bull. On the last day of hunting Seth and Jack finally got their oppor-tunity and made the most of it. Jim and Bill had some close calls but were un-able to get the right bull in shooting dis-tance. We finished the first hunt 6 for 7.

The second hunt we had 4 bull hunters and one cow hunter. Sue and VO Johnson joined us once again and Ethan was their guide again. The first day of the hunt Sue wasted no time and killed her first bull elk - a big 6x6. Good job Sue! VO waited a couple days and he killed a big bull as well. Billy Revis and Matt Boos were hunting with me, and we spotted a nice bull above the timber line and decided to give him a try. With no way to get horses to him we knew we would have to backpack the bull to the cliff face he was above and lower the meat and head down. We scaled the cliff and Billy crawled into range and killed

the old bull with one shot. Then the work began getting him to the horses. The next day we returned with pack horses to pack him out. Wrangler Justin Armacost went with us to pack the elk. While Matt and I continued on to hunt a cow. It wasn’t long and we spotted some cows and Matt filled his tag. Ed Dolan and Seth teamed up and they were able to kill a nice 6 point bull as well. As we departed camp we smiled as we went 5 for 5 and had an enjoyable hunt.

As the third hunt neared we were praying for snow to get the elk migra-tion started. We did get a little bit of snow and it was just enough to move some elk around. Return hunter Park-er Edson and guide Flint wasted no time and killed a bull opening morning - getting our hunt started right. Shawn Kooch and Neal Mooney hunted with me. On the third day of the hunt we found a bull that Neal liked and he filled his tag with a nice one shot kill. A couple days later Shawn and I found a good 6x6 right above camp. Phil and Jake Alwinger hunted with Seth and they both killed nice bulls on the last 2 days of the season. Unfortunately, Ethan’s streak ran out and hunters David Harrell and Rich Gilmore were not able to find bulls they were satisfied with. The hunt ended and we were 5 for 7, we would like to have had better luck on this hunt, but again it is hunting.

Overall our general season was pret-ty good. We finished 16 for 19 despite the weather and that is right around our average.

TOP QUALITY HUNTS

Billy with a nice 6x6 bull.

David with an awesome late season bull.

With these licenses being so dif-ficult to draw we go the extra mile to give the hunter the

best opportunity to kill the bull of their dreams. In the past years we have killed many of the top bulls in the state of Wyoming and we have received awards and recognition for these bulls. If you have points built up in Wyoming please give us a call and we would be happy to discuss the options that may work for you. The areas we hunt are 53, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59, and 66.

In 2015 we took 12 late season bull elk hunters. This is the most we have ever had in one year. I guess the success we have been having and the top qual-ity bulls we have been killing is paying off. Many times these late season hunts depend on weather and snow pack in Yellowstone Park to get the big bulls moving from their summer range to their winter range. Usually we have a fair amount of snow by the last general rifle hunt. This year there was barely any snow. We had lots of concerns about how the late bull hunts would be.

In my wilderness camp in area 59 we had 2 late hunters. This is usually one of the hunts we kill our best bulls on, in the 350 plus range. But this year it wasn’t meant to be, we saw plenty of smaller bulls in the 320-330 range but nothing close to record book, which my hunters were looking for. The only rea-son being it was a poor snow year. We truly are at mother nature’s mercy.

Area 53 is an area I have hunted since I was a boy. My family owned the camp in the area at one time and is still one of my favorite hunts. This year we had 9 hunters in the area and killed 6

LATE SEASON BULLS

bulls. This is a physical hunt with lots of hours in the saddle. The bulls we usually kill in this area range from 300 to 350. The bulls we killed there this year were mostly right around the 320 range.

David was the first hunter I had in the area. He and Ethan killed an old 6x6 bull. The middle of the month we

had hunters Ricky Martin and Shepard Green join us. Ricky and I were able to find another old lone bull and filled his tag with a nice bull. If he wasn’t broke up he would have been a 6x7. Shepa-rd and guide Terry Dolan teamed up. They were not able to find a good bull in the time Shepard had.

The next week we had 3 more hunt-

ers join us. Scott and Rod Massmann were hunting with Terry on a 3-day hunt and Rod killed a nice bull, but Scott did not see anything he wanted to shoot. Mark Davis and I hunted sev-eral days and finally found a bull we spotted earlier in the week. A pretty 6x7 bull!

The last week of the season we had 3 more hunters in camp. Bob and Chris Carlson were able to draw the area again on a random tag and they were hunting with me. Only being a 3 day hunt we went to the back part of the area and killed two nice 6 point bulls. Jason Shepard and guide Seth hunted the rest of the week and saw some good bulls. Jason has killed a lot of elk and chose to hold out for a big one.

We had one hunter in area 56. This is another area that can produce big bulls 350 plus. We figured we would have snow by this time since the hunt takes place in December, but not this year. We did see plenty of bulls but most of them were smaller. We did, however, see some big bulls. There was a lot more hunt-ing pressure in the area this year be-cause of hunters buying commission-ers licenses. (Expect to see some sort of change in season because of this).

Hunter Scott Hoard and myself had seen several nice bulls, but we had seen one 7x7 that was one of the prettiest bulls around. We saw this bull the first day and some other hunters spooked him before we could get to him. The next day we made sure we were ear-lier to be the first on the mountain. We searched several spots and finally found him with 7 other bulls with a quick range and 1 shot the hunt was over.

Kathryn got her first mule deer.

Kathryn guides Jim and Rodger for their successful 2015 antelope hunt.

Proudly displaying the flag at camp.

Carl's corner2015 proved to be one of the busiest

years we have ever had. Our Orvis en-dorsement was bringing lots of inqui-ries our way and more pack trips. Most of the summer we ran two pack strings and a couple times three. I had to rely on veterans of the industry to do this and they proved why they are so valu-able. With a crew of knowledgeable and friendly guides, cooks and wranglers it was a great summer.

Our women’s pack trips and hunting trips have really become popular and we intend on continuing these trips, so if you are a woman or know a woman who would enjoy these trips get in contact with us.

We had one of the busiest hunting

seasons ever. We had our same amount of archery and general season rifle elk hunters plus lots of cow hunters and 12 late season bull hunters. And, that’s not to mention the sheep, deer and antelope hunters. Again, the grass was great this year but that combined with no snow made for a very tough late season. We de-pend on snow to get the game herds mi-grating from Yellowstone to their winter range for the late season hunts. Despite this, our season was still really good and we look forward to the upcoming season.

We hope you enjoy reading this and we look forward to visiting with you in the future.

Happy Trails,

Carl Sauerwein

We offer 3 deer hunts 5 days in length from

our ranch house starting October 25th -29th, 10/31-11/4, 11/6-11/10. We access the wilderness on horses to hunt for the day and return to the ranch at night. Most of the areas we hunt are general but we do offer some limited quota areas. We also offer a wilderness tent camp hunt from our Boulder camp. This is a 6-day hunt. On average we harvest 4 and 5 point deer that score 150 to 170 inches and our

success rates average 85-90%.

We have multiple antelope areas we hunt around the state of Wyoming. Some of these areas are very difficult to draw and others are easy. We will discuss with you to see what options work for you. These hunts are 3 days in length and we hunt from 4-wheel drives and ATV's. We hunt from my ranch house, motels and sometimes a wall tent camp. These are high success hunts on mature buck antelope.

MULE DEER AND ANTELOPE

Our summer camps consist of water proof canvas teepee tents

with side walls cots and a foam pad.

We have a cook fly where the cook prepares the meals and a BS fly that our guest can get under in case of the occasional rain shower. We also have the comforts of a latrine and shower. Chairs add to the comfort around the camp fire.

Our cook prepares family style meals over the fire and gas stove, appetizers and

cocktails are served nightly along with dessert to top the evening meal off.

Our hunting camp con-sists of a 16x40 dining tent where we eat and socialize. The sleeping tent is a canvas 10x12 tent with cots, foam pads and a woodstove. We also have a latrine and show-er for your convenience.

Our chef prepares and serves family style meals with the entire fixings. You would be hard pressed to find a better meal at a 5 star restaurant!

We are booking our general season elk camp 2 years out if you are interested

in a spot. We highly recommend you contact us to discuss dates and put a $500 deposit down on the hunt accompanied by a reser-vation form. This is the only way to secure a spot with us. If you ap-ply for and draw a license then call us at that point to book a spot, we

probably will not have an opening for you. You can find reservation forms on our website or contact us and we can email one to you. You can pay with a check, money order or credit card. We do this on a first come first serve basis. You may also ask and we can email our refund policy. If you book a spot with us for elk YOU MUST PUR-CHASE PREFERENCE POINTS

to increase draw odds you can ask and we can instruct you on how to do this. We also highly recommend travel insurance this will protect you if you are unable to come on your hunts and have to cancel after you have drawn licenses. There are several choices available; if you are a member of SCI they have a travel insurance that is good, the other is travel guard thru AIG insurance.

One thing I cannot express enough is physical fitness. This is a horseback hunt in the Rocky Mountains so doing some physical fitness before your hunt will great-ly increase your odds at harvesting an animal. We also recommend rid-ing some before your hunt so you are more comfortable on a horse. WE do have weight restrictions of 275 lbs. for our horses.

We would prefer to do your ap-plication for you via the Game & Fish portal on line. You can either send me a completed application with a check for the amount of the application fee or I will go through it with you over the phone as I en-ter the information into the por-

tal. This assures us that the appli-cation is completed correctly and submitted by the deadline. If you have any questions on the appli-cation process, be sure to give us a call and we can walk you through it.

Elk license applications are ac-

cepted the month of January only. Drawing results are available via phone or the website on February 28th. Preference point only form available via website July 1- Sep-tember 30.

GratuitiesTipping has been a tradition since the

1800’s. Tips are very much appreciated by the GUIDE, COOKS and WRANGLERS for a job well done. We expect the staff to work hard and take care of the client; how-ever, we cannot say how individuals will get along. We believe that our job is not done until the meat is at the processor and you have been introduced to the taxidermist. At this time, you can decide how much you wish to tip your guide.

Years ago an average tip was $100; now the average is somewhere above $100 each for the Cook & Wrangler and around 10%

of your total hunt to the guide. Each hunter will have to decide upon the amount based on his own experience and financial abili-ties.

This is not a subject we like to discuss as we feel this is your decision; however, we feel ALL the STAFF needs to be adequately tipped without adding a gratuity to your bill. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us.

ReferencesWe do have references but due to privacy

rights, will only give them out upon request. If you would like to check out some of our references, please feel free to contact us.

Meat ProcessingWe have a meat processor in Cody.

They will ship your meat right to you. Due to being the only processor in town; they most likely will not be able to do rush or-ders as they are so busy. If you choose not to have your meat processed here, bring some large coolers and you can take it home with you.

TaxidermyThere are many taxidermists around the

country and you may have a preference. If not, the only one we recommend is Nature's Design Taxidermy in Cody, Wyoming. They

do beautiful work and their turn-around time is usually 6 to 8 months. www.natures-designtaxidermy.com
