Bike to School Week: May 11th-May 15th is National Bike to School Week! Environmental Science students would like to encourage all students—who are able—to bike or walk to school during that week. By walking or biking you can get exercise and reduce your carbon footprint. Students who bike or walk to school will be entered into a drawing for gift certificates to Amy's Ice Cream. There will be a table in the front lobby each morning where students who biked or walked to school that day can enter their names the drawing. Remember to wear your helmet when biking, always use crosswalks, and obey traffic signals.

Yearbook: Yearbook payments can now only be made on campus. The yearbooks have sold quickly in the past few weeks and only limited quantities remain. As a result, the Balfour website is no longer accepting orders online. If you want to purchase a book, pick up an order form in the office and turn it in with your payment ASAP. Orders will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, we need your videos and pictures! The yearbook has been printed, but it's not too late to submit photos or videos for our Spring 2015 video, which will be linked to a QR code in the yearbook. If you have videos or pictures of spring events, such as the talent show, dance recitals, end of year performances, please send them to [email protected]. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Dietz, Yearbook Advisor, at [email protected] or (512) 841-0113.

Young Playwrights for Change:

Austin’s ZACH Theatre was the local sponsor this year of the national Young Playwrights for Change writing contest, an initiative by Theatre for Young Audiences/USA (TYA/USA) and the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE), two organizations dedicated to engaging young people in theatre arts. Earlier this semester, students in the ELA classes of Ms. Winburne worked on writing plays (with the theme “What is family?”) to submit for the contest.

We are very pleased to announce the names of the Lamar students selected as ZACH Theatre’s Regional Finalists: Erin Caylor, Sofia Martinez, Isaac Molloy, Selen Sakaoglu, and Sophia Shampton. We are especially proud that the play written by Sofia Martinez received 1st Place in ZACH Theatre’s contest and was selected to move on to the national Young Playwrights for Change competition, where her script “The Flower Girl” was recognized as Honorable Mention. This was the second year that a Lamar playwright was recognized as Honorable Mention on a national level in this contest. The winning regional plays submitted for the national competition are further distinguished with publication in an anthology. There will be an event show-casing the plays honored as finalists at ZACH Theatre on Saturday, May 30th beginning at 6 p.m. The community is invited to this staged reading and reception, so please come and support our students. Congratulations to these winning writers!

Environmental Science Showcase:

You're Invited to Lamar Middle School's first Environmental Science Showcase on Tuesday, May 19th, 2015 from 2:30 to 3:30pm in the Lamar Library. Select teams of environmental science students will present the EcoAudit data that they collected and analyzed this semester as well as the EcoProjects that they are currently implementing around campus. Using data, graphs and images, teams will highlight campus environmental strengths and weaknesses and explain the goals, details, challenges and results of each of their unique EcoProjects. Please RSVP to Abby Randall at [email protected] by Friday, May 15th.

Vision + Voice Results: Congratulations to Richard Giro (and to his teacher Mr. Saxton) for his honorable mention in the Vision + Voice Poetry contest! The 2015 contest winners and honorable mentions were announced on April 30, 2015 via the Austin ISD digital press, Voiceprint. You can visit http://www.voiceprintaustin.org/vv-winners-and-honorable-mentions/ to view winning poems and honorable mentions. More information will be communicated in the upcoming weeks regarding the pairing of winning poems with Austin Community College student artwork, the printed anthology of winning poems and poems that received honorable mentions, and the 2015 Vision + Voice Celebration Reception for all participants (to be held on September 18, 2015). Please note, all submissions will be published on Voiceprint by the end of the school year. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Asha Dane’el at 414-1522 or via email at: [email protected]. A big thanks to all the principals, teachers, and librarians who facilitated and encouraged students’ participation. Your students are now published authors!

Final Library Due Date: As we approach the end of the year, please be sure your students have cleared themselves of any library obligations. All library books and resources are due back to the school by Friday May 22nd. Students with outstanding checkouts will be billed for the replacement cost of the item. Remember, library obligations follow you even once you have left the school, so be sure you’re free and clear to start the next school year off right!

Do the “Write “Thing Update: The "Do the Write Thing" Challenge Program is an initiative founded in 1996 by the National Campaign to Stop Violence designed to give middle school students in 7th and 8th grade an opportunity to evaluate and examine the impact of violence on their lives. Students from our campus participated in this essay writing contest, and Max Cioci and Sammi Neff were selected by a panel of community leaders as finalists to represent Lamar in the local competition. The award recognition dinner was held the evening of April 30th, and during the ceremony, Max Cioci was selected as "First Runner-Up" for Austin/Travis County. He received a brand new Dell laptop in recognition of his award. Both Max and Sammi now have their essays published in a book with all of the area finalists--and this publication will receive a place in the Library of Congress. Way to go Scotties!

Immunizations: Did you know that your 6th grader may need 3 more shots to enter 7th grade? Greater than 80% of our current 6th graders are not up to date with the vaccines they will need to enter 7th grade. They are as follows:

Tdap: 1 dose within the last 5 yrs Varicella: 2 total doses needed Meningococcal (MCV): 1 dose

Recommended:

Human Papillomavirus (HVP)

Has your child already received these vaccines? If so, please send a copy of their immunization record to the health office so we can mark them off our list. A copy of the record may also be faxed to: (512) 467-6862 or emailed to: [email protected]. If your child has not had these vaccines and you would like help obtaining them, please call the health office at the number above.

Guitar Solo & Ensemble Results: Congratulations to Lamar guitarists on their outstanding performances at Saturday's Solo and Ensemble. Lamar received 21 superior ratings. Lamar also received all three best in class awards. That means that among all the middle school guitarists these three were chosen as the best performers within their level of difficulty. Congratulations to Allie Gordon, Kristen Tibbetts and Wes Savage! They'll get to record their performance for a television broadcast next week on May 13th. Students will receive their comment sheets from the judge along with any medals they won from Mr. Marsden.

Anthony Molgren 7th/8th Grade Physical Education & 8th Grade Health

For those of you who don’t already know, Coach Molgren is always a ball of energy

in the hallways of Lamar. Helping others stay healthy is one of his top priorities in both life

career. He often encourages fellow staff members to take on new physical challenges

(such as trying their hand at a triathlon), and is usually training for an event himself. We

are lucky to have such a motivated and enthusiastic teacher on campus!

 A Conversation with Coach Molgren

What made you decide to become an educator?

I’ve always enjoyed working with kids and I also enjoy learning new things. A career in education is a great way to have

the opportunity to do both, and the camaraderie makes the job fun and exciting!

Tell us about your background:

I’m originally from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I joined the Navy after high school, where I worked on several different

aircraft carriers as a jet engine mechanic in an F/A‐18 aircraft squadron. During my time in the military I also served as

the physical education officer for my squadron, earning a letter of commendation for my services. When I left the

military I decided to obtain my teaching certification by attending college at Texas State University, majoring in

Exercise and Sport Science, and minoring in Geography (graduated Magna Cum Laude). After graduation Lamar

decided to take me on and I have been enjoying working with the staff and students ever since!

What do you feel is the most exciting thing about teaching at Lamar?

I feel that the last lesson of any unit is the most exciting and rewarding. This is when the students put everything

they’ve learned into a final, culminating class or two to demonstrate their knowledge of the unit. I have the

opportunity to watch them enjoy a sport with their classmates while they call the shots and govern the game, showing

sportsmanship, leadership, and displaying what they have learned in class.

If someone were to shadow you for a day in your classroom, what could they expect in a typical day at Lamar?

A typical day in the gym would involve students engaged in different types of activities during class to promote

physical movement growth, and the students will also be seen working together in some type of group to build social

and athletic skills.

What are some fun facts about you?

Since I was in the Navy my travels are extensive. I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen some ports in Spain, Israel,

France, Greece, Slovenia, Sicily, Turkey, and parts of the Caribbean such as Saint Thomas and the Bahamas. I’ve also

been to almost every state east of the Mississippi with the exception of the Northeast corner. My hobbies include

playing sports with friends such as disc golf, going to the driving range, cycling, and running. I also enjoy going out and

exploring the variety of activities that the city of Austin has to offer us all, such as the hike and bike trail, Barton

Springs, and Austin’s many different eateries.

What do you think is the most important advice or wisdom you can impart to your students?

There is too much good advice in the world to settle on just one. Forgive yourself. Be 2% smarter than what you’re

working with. Think twice, act once. Pick your battles wisely. Work smarter, not harder. Most importantly, be cool and

stay in school.
