FROM THE PASTOR -- Now that the Advent/Christmas Season has been completed, the church enters what is called ORDINARY TIME - the longest season of the liturgical year. In many ways it is an unfortunate name to describe something (or somebody) as ordinary is no great compliment: it was just an ordinary meal; an ordinary event; an ordinary party. Nothing special! However, just the opposite is true for the church. Ordinary means the norm; that which gives meaning to the “special” seasons of the church’s year. Ordinary Time celebrates the complete mystery of our salvation in Christ. Unlike the other seasons of the liturgical year that focus on one aspect of the salvation mystery, Ordinary Time focuses on the entire Paschal Mystery of Christ’s Life, Death and Resurrection, Ascension and Gift of the Spirit. ORDINARY? I think not. Let us, therefore, rejoice and give thanks for our salvation in Christ as each Sunday we gather for Mass to deepen our appreciation for so great a mystery. January is often thought of as a quiet month; a time to regroup and recharge for things to come. Such is not the case here at Saint Luke. Allow me to share some happenings/events: Signs - recently a variety of signs were posted around the church - some to give directions; some to identify where things are located AND others to clarify the function of certain spaces like the parking lot on Clintonville Street across from the church. Hopefully, the new signs will help parishioners and guests to better use the parish facilities. Carnival 2014 - SAVE THE DATE Catholic Schools Week—Sunday, January 26 to Friday, January 31 Please consult today’s bulletin for more information and details. And don’t forget the Memorial Mass for Sister Catherine Reilly, O.P.; the Blessing of the new Hymnals; the Book Sale by the Daughters of St. Paul. Quiet? Hardly! But so much to be thankful and so many events to celebrate. Please consult the bulletin for information and details. Or visit the Parish Website at stlukewhitestone.org. God bless. WE NEED YOUR HELP! It is wonderful to see so many using the new hymnals for the Mass prayers as well as the hymns. Permanent books are a welcome addition to Saint Luke Church and it our hope that these books will remain with us for at least 10 years or more. Unfortunately, some of the books have already been found with pages torn or bindings broken. We ask that you be very careful when returning the hymnal to the pew rack. Please do not dog ear the pages or leave the book open in the pew rack, it damages them. With a little extra care we will keep the books good as new for the next ten years. Thank you. **************************************************************************** BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP A Bereavement Support Group provides a safe place where people who are grieving the loss of loved ones can share their experiences with others who are in similar situations, who have similar concerns and who are better able to understand the grief process. Our Bereavement Group at St. Luke Parish currently meets on the first Tuesdays of each month in the Pastoral Center (formerly the lower church) at 7:30pm. If you need further information or if you are interested in attending the bereavement sessions, please contact Sister Theresa (718) 746-8531 who facilitates the group and who also offers Bereavement Counseling where needed. During the next months, the group will meet: Tuesday, February 4 Tuesday, March 4 Tuesday, April 1 **************************************************************************** Collective Intention Masses are available for 2014. The dates for these Masses offered twice a month are as follows: January 26 July 12 & 27 February 8 & 23 August 9 & 24 March 23 & 29 September 13 & 28 April 12 & 27 October 11 & 26 May 25 November 8 & 23 June 14 & 22 December 13 & 28 If you wish to make arrangements for any of these Masses, please call the Rectory Office at (718) 746-8102 and speak to Valerie. ****************************************************************************

Dear Friends, Please join us for National Catholic Schools Week at St. Luke School. Starting with an open house after the 10:30AM Mass on Sunday, January 26, we have a whole week of activities planned to demonstrate what our students are accom-plishing and to celebrate the community we’ve built to educate tomorrow’s citizens and church leaders. This year’s National Catholic Schools Week theme is based on community: “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The theme highlights the fact that not only are schools communities themselves, they are also part of many other communities, including families, parishes, cities and our country. In addition, the theme focuses on key components of Catholic education: faith development, academic excellence and dedication to service. These elements set Catholic schools apart from other educational options. They are why families make sacrifices to provide a Catholic education to their children. National Catholic Schools Week is an opportunity for you to see what I’m talking about. I am so proud of our students, and I can’t wait for you to visit our school to enjoy the student displays our children have prepared. When you come, please bring your friends and neighbors, particularly those who may be thinking about Catholic education for their chil-dren. National Catholic Schools Week is also a time for me to say publicly what I think every single day: I am grateful for the dedication and commitment of our teachers, staff, administrators, parents and volunteers who make our school a suc-cess! They help our community thrive. Sincerely,

Barbara Reiter Principal
