This Advent season, each Catholic parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will have their doors open and lights on

Wednesday, December 11th from 6 to 9 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away

for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to re-

connect with Christ and His Church.

“Prepare” Second Sunday of Advent

Today we continue the "joyful expectation" of the birth of

Christ in history, the present, and the future. Today we hear

the words of John the Baptist calling people of his time to

repentance. Now, this baptism that John was calling people

to is not the same baptism that we Christians celebrate.

However, John's baptism is at the root of our Christian bap-

tism. John's baptism had its roots in the "oblation washing"

of the Jewish people before undertaking anything of great

importance.

Christian baptism is a sacrament to wash away original

sin so as to enter sinless into the Christian community. It is

the one sacrament that is celebrated by all Christians, even

those Christians who are not in communion with Rome.

Johns enjoins us to "prepare the way of the Lord." His

call is to be taken in the widest sense. This preparation is a

personal preparation, and is also a communal preparation.

We are called to make sure we are ready to meet the Lord,

and this means that we need to make a difference in the

world to make it better, to make it more peaceful, and to

make it more just. We are called to protect each other's dig-

nity and share of our abundance with others so that each

may live a life that is centered on helping others.

Blessed Advent to you all! Prepare the way!

Patroness of the

United States of America

Sunday, December 8 “O Mary, conceived without

original sin, pray for us who have

recourse to thee. You are all fair Mary;

the stain of original sin is not in you.

You are the Glory of Jerusalem,

the Joy of Israel.

You are the greatest honor of our people!

Mary, the Mother of God, pray for us!” Advent heralds the wonders of the Incarnation by

which Redemption came to be. Mary was the key in the

scheme of salvation history. Pius X1 defined the dogma

of Immaculate Conception December 8, 1854.

Because the Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on

a Sunday this year —

it is not a Holy Day of Obligation.

Mary, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception,

bless and protect America!

Mary, Queen of peace, pray for us!

Wait, Watch and Wonder Watch for signs of Jesus all around you each day.

Watch for someone to hold a door for the next person,

shovel a neighbor’s walk or help carry something

heavy. Watch for opportunities to say hello to some-

one who looks lonely, cheer up a crying child, or clean up a

mess that you didn’t make. Offer these moments up to Jesus in

silent prayers. Watch for the first star of the evening one night,

then read from the Bible the story of the star announcing Jesus’

birth in Luke 2:1-20.

OPLATKI - CHRISTMAS WAFERS Breaking and sharing the Christmas Wafers in traditional

ways, we make our Christmas oblation of best wishes to

family and friends, accompanied by expressions of for-

giveness. Our tradition continues. Packets available in

vestibule. A donation of $2.00 per packet is appreciated.

2020 CALENDARS AVAILABLE The 2020 Parish Calendars for St. Matthias Parish are

available in the main entrance of the Churches. We thank

all the Funeral Homes who graciously supplied our 2020

calendars: Behm, Lesako and Rudolph Funeral Homes.

God Bless You!!

I want to reinforce my message of last Sunday by ask-

ing all to pray for Fr. John, all victims of abuse, all false-

ly accused and for healing of our Church. I am sure our

Lord in His love and mercy will hear and answer such

prayers and turn the evil of the abuse of our young people

and vulnerable adults into an opportunity to shower spe-

cial graces on their lives and on His Church.

I also want to reinforce the message that Fr. John’s

service to St. Hugh and Our Lady of Consolation parishes

for 20 years should not be discounted or forgotten. We

are very appreciative of his leadership as a spiritual

Father and for all he did here for the people of God.

His spiritualty remains an inspiration for all.

Tomorrow (Monday) is the Feast of the Immaculate

Conception which has been rescheduled from December

8 since that date this year is celebrated as the second Sun-

day of Advent. While the obligation to attend mass is not

transferred to Monday, I encourage all who are able to

celebrate the Feast at Mass if possible. This Feast is a

special one for our country as the Blessed Mother is pa-

troness of the United States under the title of “The Im-

maculate Conception.” The occasion provides an excel-

lent opportunity to ask her intercession that her Son will

guide and protect our country that it may always be a

light to all nations as it is guided by Christian principles.

ADULT SERVERS NEEDED There is a need for “Adult Servers” (male or female) for

the 10:30 am Sunday Mass at St. Marcellus Worship Site.

[email protected]. A training session will be

held at St. Marcellus Worship Site on Sunday, December

22 following the 10:30 am Mass.

thony Schools Program. Knights will be located at the

Second Sunday of Advent 7

Every Sunday at Mass, Catholics around the world hear 3 or 4 passages from the Bible. We end up listening to hun-dreds of passages from Scripture. Join us weekly as Dr. Brant Pitre takes us for an in-depth Bible study on the Gospel readings, connecting them with the Old Testament reading and Responsorial Psalm for each Sunday Mass. You will learn the meaning of passages, why the various readings were chosen and put together, and how the Old Testament reading points forward to the New Testament and how the New Testament fulfills the Old. Understand the Biblical roots of the Catholic faith and how the readings that are given to us each week are meant to be applied to our daily lives, walking with Christ as Disciples of the Lord.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Being Catholic takes more than simply believing in God or doing what

he asks of us. Jesus wants you to be more than just a believer—He wants

joy of a renewed friendship with Christ. You will learn what it takes to

follow Him. You will experience the joy of divine friendship, and you will

see how God— and only God—can satisfy the deepest desires of your

heart.

Each of the EIGHT sessions will have a 30-minute DVD presentation followed by a 30-minute group discussion on the

session’s questions. Dr. Edward Sri will guide you through the Gospel of John. Dr. Sri will explain how Christ’s en-

counters with others in the Gospel are examples of how He lovingly and persistently calls each of us to a more intimate

and life-changing relationship with Him.

Heart Prayer

Saint Michael, your heart was

filled with great charity for

God and man.

Our Lord returned your love

and allowed you to exchange

mystically your heart with His.

Pray for all whose hearts are

afflicted with illness, fear,

or loneliness.

Teach us to be resigned to

God’s will in all the trials

and sicknesses.

Help us to live as you lived —

to do good now and for eternity.

Amen.
