PARISH UPDATES Our very dear and loving Parishioners of Ss Peter and Lambert, This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity which according to our Catechism is the central mystery of Christian Faith and Life (CCC 234). All our Faith lies in this mystery. So, what do we mean when we talk about the Most Holy Trinity? We mean we believe that there are three persons in one God. These three persons are co-equal, coeternal, and co-substantial. The dogma has three main parts: (a) The Trinity is One (b) They are three distinct persons- They are distinct from one another in their relations of origin: "It is the Father who generates, the Son who is begotten, and the Holy Spirit who proceeds (c) The divine persons are relative to one another (in a relationship with one another). That is quite ridiculous if we think about it mathematically. However, we should never think about that it in terms of Mathematics but in terms of Love. There is a radical unity that love brings about. But how can we really understand the Trinity. There is this funny video on YouTube of how St Patrick (of Ireland) messed up explaining the Holy Trinity. Now if Saint Patrick did not get it, how can I? Maybe we really do not need to fully understand the Trinity. Maybe all we need is to enjoy the gift of the three persons in one God and follow their example of unity. I rest my case before I fall into a heresy. As you must have heard, there was a terrorist attack in Saint Francis Xavier, Ọwọ, Oǹdó State. What many do not know is that Oǹdó State is the state I am from in Nigeria. For about ten years, my eldest sister was living in Ọwọ. After ordination, I will always go visit her almost weekly and attend Mass at this Church. Ọwọ is a town with historical significance for my ethnic group (Yorùbá). It was established sometime before the 11th and 15th century and currently the King’s palace is the largest in Africa. Also, until last Sunday one of the most peaceful and peace-loving towns in Nigeria. In fact, the word Ọwọ means honor or respect in Yorùbá language. As an example of how peaceful these people are, the landlord of my eldest sister was a Muslim, and I would would sit down with him and talk about religion every evening of my visit. After most conversations, he would leave to say his prayers and I will go to pray my vespers. That peace was shattered last Sunday with the terrorist attacks which left over 50 persons dead including children. It was a black Sunday. A seminarian lost both parents in the attack. Moreso, given that we go to church in Nigeria as a family, some families were completely wiped out in this devilish act. I ask for prayers for the survivors who are receiving treatment, for those who lost family and friends and lastly for eternal repose for the dead. May they rest in Peace. This is also a reminder that fundamentalist ideas costs human lives. The happy news this week is that our Pastor, Fr Kricek is back hale and hearty. We are happy to have him back in the saddle and we pray that God will continue to bless and keep him healthy. Finally, please do not forget that next Sunday (June 19) is our Corpus Christi procession as a Parish at the Saint Peter’s Church. Come and let us all adore the Lord in the Holy Eucharist at 1.30pm. If there is any time in our world to pray harder, I think it is now. So, please come out and join us for the procession. Until next week, May God keep us safe from all the troubles in our world. Fr Paul Ọlátúbòsún Àdajà.
