Stewardship in Action! The St. Vincent de Paul Conference sends a special thank you to the St. Joseph’s Elementary School Student Council and all of the classes that donated food for the families that received Thanksgiving food baskets. The students helped us fill our food bags with all the needed canned goods and mashed potatoes and stuffing, gravy and extras like soup and cereal. The kindergarten supplied enough Mac and cheese (over 90 boxes) to give two boxes for each family. We delivered a turkey, pie, and food bags to 34 families. We also sent food to St Barnabas SVdP to add to their food deliveries. We appreciate the support of the school and of Mrs. Gaunt, the School Council Advisor who helped organize the

A Message from the Associate Pastor 2nd Advent Candle

The blessing of the Advent wreath last weekend marked the beginning of the Advent spiritual journey. It is a wonderful spiritual journey. It is a sense of meaning and purpose in the anticipation of the many graces given during this liturgical season. Traditionally, the 1st Sunday of Advent candle or the “Prophet’s Candle” symbolizes Hope, reminding us that Jesus is coming.

The 2nd Sunday of Advent candle, the “Bethlehem Candle”, symbolizes Faith, reminding us of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. Father in Heaven, the day draws near when the birth of Your Son will make radiant the night of the waiting world. May his quiet coming fill us with true inner peace. Amen

Friends, in this Second Sunday of Advent, the gospel tells us about St. John the Baptist as the voice in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. He is reminding us to prepare and to get ready for the coming of the Messiah in our lives. He is calling us to take a deeper look into ourselves and turn our lives in another direction, i.e., to God.

The Baptist’s cry this weekend is nothing less than a call to conversion: an offer of a second chance. A reminder that we can change. We can start all over again. We can turn around and follow the right path.

Friends, this is what Advent is all about: to make ourselves ready not for the Christmas holidays, but for Christ. We make ourselves ready for the indwelling of God in our hearts. But this can only take place when we pave the way to our hearts, when the way to our hearts is cleared from obstacles and clutters. The Baptist says it best: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

Are we willing to heed the voice in the wilderness? Are we willing to pause from our often busy and noisy life and take time to look into ourselves vis-à-vis God? Are we willing to admit our imperfections, weaknesses or sinfulness before Him? Are we willing to straighten out our lives?

The Baptist is asking us to seize the offer of a second chance. To accept the offer of forgiveness and renewal. In other words, he is asking us to pray more intently. To hope more ardently. To forgive more generously. To love more completely. That is how we prepare the way of the Lord. That is how we make it easier for God to enter our hearts.

May God bless you abundantly this season of waiting as you prepare yourself and your loved ones for the coming of our Lord.

In Christ,

Father John

“We pray for all those suffering from the fires in our State. For those who have lost everything, that our solidarity will show them the merciful face of Christ. We also pray for those who have died, that the Lord may welcome them in His peace, comfort their families and encourage those who are providing relief and support. We also pray for the brave women and men battling the fires and providing immediate aid to all affected, for their safety and strength” ~ Bishop Barber

The Holidays are here but for some among us this is a dreaded time of the year because they have lost a loved one. Take the time to connect with someone who is in this situation. Take them out to lunch or call them to let them know that you are thinking of them. Keep them in your heart and your prayers especially in this holiday season.

Parish Office Volunteers We are in need of volunteers on Mondays, 1:00 - 5:00pm and Thursdays, 9:00am - 5:00pm. On Thursdays, you can volunteer four or more hours. The office needs someone who is able to do some admin and computer work. If you can share your time and talent, please call Sherley (510) 995 9420. We would love to have you join the Parish office team!

Combating Racism

"But racism still profoundly affects our culture, and it has no place in the Christian heart. This evil causes great harm to its victims, and it corrupts the souls of those who harbor racist or prejudicial thoughts. The persistence of the evil of racism is why we are writing this letter now." The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) approved in its November General Assembly, a formal statement, “Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, A Pastoral Letter Against Racism." We encourage you to read more of the statement at: http://www.usccb.org/news/2018/18-186.cfm

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pray for Us! Please join us for the final nights of the novena in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We pray the rosary in Spanish each evening at 7pm in the Parish Center (with bilingual handouts), concluding with a bilingual rosary in the Basilica on her feast day this Wednesday. Wednesday morning all are invited to Las Mañanitas at 6am in Basilica to sing traditional songs to the Virgin, followed by a reception in the Parish Center.

Preparation for registered, active parishioners should begin at least six months in advance of the proposed wedding date. Please contact Fr. George 510-995-9421
