Course aims and content Learning outcomes
Business English II is a compulsory course that
exposes students to a fairly wide range of topics
in the field of economics from a more complex
linguistic perspective. Since this course is a
sequence of Business English I, the topics are
more extensive in terms of content and
vocabulary. The emphasis is placed on the
improvement and implementation of the
students’ communication skills in different areas
of the field of economics through the
improvement of the four basic language skills:
listening, reading, writing, and speaking, in
terms of fluency and accuracy. The main aim of
the course, except the use of a richer vocabulary
and advancement of the communication skills,
is also the boost of students’ self-confidence
that will help them to implement their acquired
knowledge in practice, e.g. to write business
plans, to make business deals, to build
partnerships, to handle crises, to deal with
mergers and acquisitions, to read professional
literature in the English language, etc.
Upon completion of the course, students will
be able to:
1. Understand a more advanced economics
terminology and communicate easily in
communicative situations of various contexts
with emphasis on the field of economics;
2. Write essays that contain up to 500 words
on the topics discussed during the lectures and
exercises;
3. Use professional literature in the English
language that corresponds with the skills
acquired through the course;
4. Use their knowledge of the language for
professional development through
participating in seminars, conferences,
simposiums, etc.
5. Work towards further improvement of their
knowledge of business English in terms of
their overall advancement.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
104
The teaching methodology is utterly based on the Communicative Approach as a dominant
orthodoxy in the English language teaching worldwide. Lectures will be delivered in an
interactive form, engaging students in all kinds of discussions concerning the topics covered in
this course, giving them instructions on the proper language use, and organising a fair range of
activities that imitate the use of the English language outside the classroom, such as: pair work,
group work, role plays, etc., in order to prepare the students to make use of the language both
inside and outside the classroom. Discussions during the exercises will be organised in small
groups in order to stimulate the students’ competitive spirit. Presentation of their seminar papers
and other assignments will also be an integral part of the teaching and learning process that will
greatly contribute to the students’ improvement of their language skills.
