edition of The Dubrovnik Times for this summer season. The sea is warming up nicely. The crystal, turquoise Adriatic Sea that fills so many social media sites throughout the summer is around 22 degrees at the moment and ideal for a dip. The latest sea quality control findings have been released and of the 118 beaches in the county an overwhelming 117 have sea water of an excellent quality. In the height of summer sea temperatures touch a bath like 26 degrees. Remember there aren’t many true sandy beaches in Dubrovnik, so if you fancy the feel of sand through your toes you’ll have to go to the island of Lopud and the famous Sunj beach. Enjoy your swimming in Dubrovnik.

Im Hochsommer errei-chen die Meerestemperaturen bis zu 26 Grad. Denken Sie außerdem daran, dass es in Dubrovnik nicht viele echte Sandstrände gibt. It has a family feel, yes the letters LAJK are the first letters of the family that runs it, you almost feel like you’ve sat down at a good friend’s house. Dubrovnik the current sea temperature is 22 degrees and the sea water is super clean. According to the Program for the determination of sea quality at the beaches of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County for 2018, the Public Health Institute

of Dubrovnik-Neretva County carried out the first regular sea research on 118 beaches in the period from May 14th to May 24th. Out of a total of 118 beaches, the sea at 117 beaches was rated as a sea of excellent quality, while only on the beach Uvala Luka at Trpanj sea was rated as sea of good quality.

Croatia and South Korea to be connected all year round

Korea starting this September. The airline Korean Air will operate flights between Zagreb and Seoul three times a week. A statement from the Zagreb Airport read “We are very proud to announce that from September 2018, Croatia and the Far East will be closer than ever. Korean Air, the largest air carrier from South Korea will connect Seoul and Zagreb three times a week year-round”. The airport

also made a pint of stating that this link to South Korea will be the third new airline that has been added to the schedule this year, after Aegean Airlines and Air Canada Rouge. It is believed that a 218-seat Airbus A330-200 will be used by Korean Air and that the actual link will be Seoul to Zagreb and then onto Zurich. This new airline, and especially this new destination, will certainly help to boost tourism figures in Croatia in the winter months.

mit, dass diese Verbindung nach Südkorea die dritte neue Flug-gesellschaft sein wird, die in diesem Jahr in den Flugplan aufgenommen wurde, nach Ae-gean Airlines und Air Canada Rouge. Es wird angenommen, dass ein Korean Air-Airbus A330-200 mit 218 Sitzplätzen eingesetzt werden wird, und dass die tatsächliche Verbin-dung von Seoul nach Zagreb und dann nach Zürich gehen wird. Diese neue Airline, und vor allem diese neue Destina-tion wird sicherlich dazu bei-tragen, die Tourismuszahlen in Kroatien in den Wintermo-naten anzukurbeln.

2.1 billion Euros to be invested in Croatian tourism in next five years

8The Croatian tourism industry can expect some

massive investment over the next five years according to a new report from the consultancy company Ernst & Young. An expected 1.2 billion Euros will be invested along the Adriatic coastline on the hotel industry. An impressive 88 hotel developments are expected to be completed by 2022, mainly along the coastline. And the report highlighted an interesting shift in where the money is coming from. Most of

the developments in tourism in Croatia until now have come from European countries, but now 42 percent of these new hotels are being built with Asian money, putting them on the same level as Croatian investors. Marija Norsic of Ernst & Young’s department for consulting in the tourist and hotel industries said that 60 percent of all investments refer to completely new projects and hotels, with the remaining 40 percent going to renovations of existing hotels.

Tourismus in Kroatien kamen bisher aus europäischen Län-dern, aber jetzt werden 42 Pro-zent dieser neuen Hotels mit asiatischem Geld gebaut und damit stehen sie auf dem glei-chen Niveau wie kroatische In-vestoren. Marija Norsic von der Beratungsabteilung für die Tou-rismus- und Hotelbranche von Ernst & Young sagte, dass sich 60 Prozent aller Investitionen auf völlig neue Projekte und Hotels beziehen, während die restlichen 40 Prozent auf die Renovierung bestehender Ho-tels entfallen.

8The Blue Flag is once again flying over the

beach of the Hotel Valamar Dubrovnik President. In a ceremony held today the Blue Flag was raised for the 17th time. The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised ecological acknowledgment for the cleanliness beaches. This year the flag was raised by two loyal guests to the hotel, the Scottish couple Frances and Robert Craig, who have

been visiting for more than twenty years. The beach of the Hotel Valamar Dubrovnik President once again this year fulfilled the demanding criteria that are prerequisites for this honourable acknowledgment, which are related to the complete beach arrangement and the security conditions at sea and on the beach itself. The blue flag on this beach has been raised since 2002.

8Constructed between the 12th to 17th centuries the Dubrovnik City Walls

are the most visited attraction in Croatia, with almost 1 million people walking the 2 kilometres last year. Rising up to 25 metres and up to 6 metres thick in places the spectacular walls represent many of the values of the city. They were built to look impressive, imposing and undefeatable, that plan worked. This defensive system, one of the most beautiful and solid fortress systems on the Mediterranean,

is composed of a range of forts, bastions, casemates, towers and freestanding fortresses. With panoramic views over the terracotta roofs of the Old City from the north walls and endless vistas of the Adriatic Sea from the south side you’ll fill your holiday album several times over. There are three entrances onto the walls, from the Stradun, from the Ploce Gate and the St. Ivan Fortress. The flow of visitors is anti-clockwise, be careful, and you can do a full circle or half a circle if you want.

TOP FIVE DUBROVNIK “MUST DO”8WALK THE CITY WALLS – if you don’t walk the walls then you haven’t seen Dubrovnik. The symbol of the city and should be top of every “must do” list of Dubrovnik. Walk either in the early morning or late afternoon, it’s just too hot in the midday sun. At 150 Kunas for an adult ticket its value for money and don’t forget your camera and an empty memory card…you’ll see why!

8 EAT LIKE A LOCAL – forget fast food, in Dubrovnik its all about slow food. Find a place where the locals frequent and avoid the tourist traps. Seafood should be fairly high on your menu list; you are after all sitting next to the Adriatic Sea. Olive oil, cheese from oil, oysters, octopus, risotto…all washed down with a bottle (or two) of fine wine from Pelješac or Korčula…you can’t go wrong.

8VISIT A MUSEUM – there are plenty of them to choose from. In fact it could be argued that the Old City itself is a living museum. The Rector’s Palace, the Sponsor Palace, Rupe Museum, the Maritime Museum, Marin Držić House…that’s probably enough to be getting on with. Buy a Dubrovnik City Card and you can visit them all for free…well for the cost of a card that is…there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

8 GET YOURSELF TO LOKRUM – yes that’s an order! If you don’t know what Lokrum is…well it’s that green island near the Old City…you know the one you keep pointing at. It’s a real oasis of flora and fauna and a very romantic place to spend the afternoon (maybe leave the kids at home). The beaches, well they aren’t really beaches, tend to be rocky, but find your “own” rock and enjoy a natural spa treatment.

8HAVE A COFFEE ON THE STRADUN – this one’s for the lazier amongst you. In fact, the coffee culture of Dubrovnik is more like a religion. None of that “express” coffee you’ll find in major cities, no, although you will find espressos! Find a good spot in the shade and people watch, don’t gulp down your drink like a tequila, sip and watch the world pass you by.

crowded through the summer months there is always room to roll out your towel on Lokrum. Portoč is the largest quay on the island. How many gates are there into the Old City and which is the least

busy?There are three land entrances into

the Old City of Dubrovnik – Pile, Ploce and Buza. There are also two gates

from the old harbour into the Old City. Out of all of the three gates into the city the least busy is the Buza Gate,

the north gate. But beware there are plenty of steps down from this gate to

the centre of the city, not a problem when enterting, a bigger problem

climbing up 200 or so steps when you leave. This gate, in spite of the steps, is the best option if you want to go on

the cable car, as the crow flies it is the shortest distance from the Stradun.

I hope I’ve succeeded, but of course, that’s for the readers to decide. When I first began writing the book it was some sort of personal reminder of certain themes

This week The Dubrovnik Times caught up with the Dubrovnik based author Vedran Mezei. “I Am Here - 7 stories on the journey to the destination” is the title and yes before you ask it is available in English. Mezei set out to write an “inspirational, entertaining and thought-provoking book,” and from the early feedback it would appear that he has succeeded. We found out who his inspirations are, what he did when he reached a crossroads in his life and the journey he went on to create the book.

and messages that I consider to be very important, yet all too often forget in everyday life.What are those messages?Perhaps a quote from Carl Gustav Jung best describes them: I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become. The majority of the stories underscore just that: our ability to create our own life. It’s for exactly that reason that some of the stories seem to be incomplete as they leave the possibility for the readers to decide for themselves what the final outcome might be. I was also thinking of a quote by French theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who said: You are not a human being in search for a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being immersed in a human experience! In addition to the fact that this book is somehow a journey towards discovering one’s own fulfilment and purpose, it tries to perceive life beyond the limits of our 5 senses.How did the book come about, from the original idea to publishing?Just like the characters from the book, I felt that I had reached a crossroads in my life seven or eight years ago and I wasn’t sure where to go. I don’t think that is something unusual, and I know many people who have gone through, or are going through a similar experience. However in my case it wasn’t the result of a bad event or disappointment in life, quite the opposite. It made me look for the wider meaning of my own existence, if I could call it that. As a result of that quest I began to write a book that represents a signpost at this imaginative intersection and which directs me to the desired destination still today. Of course, I’m not referring to a certain place but instead my own state of being. It took me two years to write the book. At that time I had two small children and it was difficult to find the right time and place to write. I often carried my laptop with me wherever I

would go. Apart from home, I wrote in the car or outside in a quiet place. I remember on one occasion having spent half a day writing in a Zagreb hotel bar while I was in the city for work. I’m sure the waiters thought something was wrong with me…Are there any people that inspire your writing that you could say are your role models?Of course, though I think it is much better that people’s actions are our inspiration rather than them as people. That’s because people change throughout their lives, but their works remain. In the story called Last Judgment - First Hearing, exactly this theme is mentioned where one of the characters says: We’re all both saints and thieves. We easily turn others into role models or idols. And ever more easily, we throw them off those imaginary thrones so we could judge them. Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King come to mind. Gandhi’s saying is famous: My life is my message! They are very few people who can reasonably claim this. Their messages of

non-violence and

love show us the direction in which everyone should finally be heading. I disagree with those who say that these teachings are just beautiful words that can’t be applied in reality because these people proved in their lives, exactly the opposite.Can you describe in brief for us, at least one of the 7 stories from the book?Well, maybe I could say something about the story I’ve mentioned: Last Judgment - First Hearing, written in the form of a teenage diary. At first it seems that this is a story about Rome and Michelangelo through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy who travels with his classmates to the capital of Italy. There, he experiences his first heartbreak. But as the action comes to an end, it

becomes clear that the main theme is finding one’s own identity in the challenging teenage years. One of the main characters is a professor of art history who opens his heart to the group of students on the last evening of their stay in Rome, speaking frankly about his view of life. This event ignites a spark in the boy that will fully determine the

direction of his life.Tourists f rom English-speaking

countries regularly visit Dubrovnik. Given that your book is translated into English, do you think that it could be interesting to people who like reading while they’re on holiday? Why would you recommend your book to them?It’s not a comfortable feeling promoting yourself or your own work. Still, I believe this book might be interesting to readers who are otherwise interested in similar topics. Perhaps it would be good to read during your vacation as it consists of 7 stories: so if your vacation lasts seven days - you read one story each day. In addition, the book will take you on a journey around the world; from Paris and Rome, via London and New York, all the way to Rio de

Janeiro, while at the same time leading you to some kind of personal journey and self-questioning. The book talks about serious topics in a simple and unobtrusive way beyond the limits of the material and spiritual. But if you, after reading the introduction, are not inclined to continue reading further, then I suggest you put the book down and read something else. Maybe something related to Dubrovnik’s history which I find really interesting and special, and could perhaps, among other things, be the subject of my next book...

8The Old City of Dubrovnik is a self-contained city, a city

surrounded by ancient stone walls. The Stradun, the main street, runs through the centre of the city like an arrow. It is one of the busiest streets and other side streets run parallel with it. It runs from East to West and is around 300 metres in length. There entrances into the Old City, one at the East – Ploce Gate, one at the West – Pile Gate and to the North – Buza Gate. The busiest is Pile Gate where all the buses arrive, if you are coming by car then the Buza Gate is the easiest...but there are lots of steps. The Stradun is the lowest point in the whole city, everything leads up from this street.

Stadt, die von alten Steinmauern umgeben ist. Der Stradun, die Hauptstraße, verläuft wie ein Pfeil durch das Stadtzentrum. 1The Dubrovnik Synagogue is the oldest Sefardic synagogue still in use today in the world and the second oldest synagogue in Europe. It is said to have been established in 1352, but gained legal status in the city in 1408.

The Republic of Ragusa was a maritime republic centred on the city of Dubrovnik that existed from 1358 to 1808. It reached its commercial peak in the 15th and the 16th centuries, before being conquered by Napoleon’s French Empire and formally annexed by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in 1808. It had a population of about 30,000 people, out of whom 5,000 lived within the city walls. Its motto was “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro”, which translated from Latin means “Liberty is not well sold for all the gold”

KORČULAWhat to see... / Sehenswürdig-keitenOld city of Korcula - The old city is surrounded by walls, and the streets are arranged in a herring-bone pattern allowing free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds. Korcula is tightly built on a promontory that guards the narrow sound between the island and the mainland. Building outside the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and the wooden drawbridge was only replaced in 1863.

Altstadt von Korčula – Die Altstadt ist umgeben von Mauern und ihre Straßen sind im Fischgrätmuster angeordnet, wodurch ein freier Luftstrom er-möglicht und gleichzeitig Schutz vor starken Winden geboten wird. Korčula ist eng auf einem Landstrich gebaut, der in den Korčula-Kanal hinausragt. Bis zum 18. Jahrhundert war es verboten, außerhalb der Mauern zu bauen. Die ursprüngliche, hölzerne Zugbrücke wurde erst 1863 ersetzt.

Arboretum in Trsteno - Ten kilometres from Slano, in the direction of Dubrovnik, lies Trsteno where the Arboretum was founded out of the estate of the family of Ivan Gučetić in 1948. Their summer house and gardens were established in the 16th century as a harmonious melding of architecture and nature. Today, the Arboretum is a preserved venue of botanical architectural culture.

Arboretum in Trsteno – Zehn Kilometer von Slano entfernt, in Richtung Du-brovnik, liegt Trsteno wo das Arboretum 1948 auf dem Gut der Familie von Ivan Gučetić begründet wurde. Das Sommerhaus und die Gärten entstanden im 16. Jahrhundert als eine harmonische Kombination von Architektur und Natur. Heute ist das Arbore-tum ein geschützter Ort botanisch-architektonisch-er Kultur.

8Traditional songs and dancers from

Croatia from this renowned Dubrovnik folklore ensemble. The s e s t u n n i n g performances are well worth a visit. The colourful swirling a n d a t t r a c t i v e dancers really bring a taste of Croatia with them and as they all dance in traditional costumes the performances are even more impressive. The Lindo Folklore Ensemble performs in the atmospheric Lazareti complex, which is located just east of the historic Old City and the show starts at 9:30 pm.

8Orlando Furioso is a cycle of baroque music organized by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra.

Music Director of this cycle is Dmitry Sinkovsky, world star of baroque violin, conductor and contratenor. This multitalented Russian virtuoso in the world is known specifically for performing baroque music. Sinkovsky prepares to perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, then Songs of British Isles with Antiphonus Ensemble and famous luteist Edin Karamazov, as well as many other pieces from baroque.

KORČULAWhat to see... / Sehenswürdig-keitenOld city of Korcula - The old city is surrounded by walls, and the streets are arranged in a herring-bone pattern allowing free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds. Korcula is tightly built on a promontory that guards the narrow sound between the island and the mainland. Building outside the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and the wooden drawbridge was only replaced in 1863.

Altstadt von Korčula – Die Altstadt ist umgeben von Mauern und ihre Straßen sind im Fischgrätmuster angeordnet, wodurch ein freier Luftstrom er-möglicht und gleichzeitig Schutz vor starken Winden geboten wird. Korčula ist eng auf einem Landstrich gebaut, der in den Korčula-Kanal hinausragt. Bis zum 18. Jahrhundert war es verboten, außerhalb der Mauern zu bauen. Die ursprüngliche, hölzerne Zugbrücke wurde erst 1863 ersetzt.

Arboretum in Trsteno - Ten kilometres from Slano, in the direction of Dubrovnik, lies Trsteno where the Arboretum was founded out of the estate of the family of Ivan Gučetić in 1948. Their summer house and gardens were established in the 16th century as a harmonious melding of architecture and nature. Today, the Arboretum is a preserved venue of botanical architectural culture.

Arboretum in Trsteno – Zehn Kilometer von Slano entfernt, in Richtung Du-brovnik, liegt Trsteno wo das Arboretum 1948 auf dem Gut der Familie von Ivan Gučetić begründet wurde. Das Sommerhaus und die Gärten entstanden im 16. Jahrhundert als eine harmonische Kombination von Architektur und Natur. Heute ist das Arbore-tum ein geschützter Ort botanisch-architektonisch-er Kultur.

Ethnohaus der Roma -Das Ethnohaus der autochtho-nen Roma-Gruppe Lovara, einer der neun Roma-Grup-pen, die heute in Kroatien leben, ist das erste derar-tige Haus in Kroatien, aber auch in Europa. Es handelt sich um ein einzigartig-es Objekt, sowohl für den Tourismus, als auch die Kultur. Touristen bietet es eine attraktive und authen-tische Darstellung der un-bekannten Geschichte, Tra-dition, Sprache und Sitten der Lovara an (z. B. Laven-del als traditionelle Pflanze der Lovara). Es werden auch authentische Gerichte und Getränke der Roma vorgestellt und verkostet.

••• La Casa dei Rom - La casa etnica dei Rom Lo-vari, una delle otto etnie zingare che vivono in Croa-zia, è la prima struttura di questo genere in Croa-zia e in Europa. Si tratta di una singolare struttura turistico-culturale che offre servizi turistici autentici e presenta l’ignota storia dei Rom, la loro tradizione, la lingua e i costumi come parte del ricco patrimonio croato, nonché tanti prodot-ti per cui una volta i Rom Lovari erano riconoscibi-li (ad esempio la lavanda, una coltura tradizionale dei Rom). In aggiunta, si pos-sono degustare i loro piatti e bevande tradizionali.

Weihnachten und Ostern bei der Familie Salaj - An den Berghängen in Moslavi-na, inmitten einer maler-ischen Landschaft mit zahlreichen Hügeln, befin-det sich das Anwesen der Familie Salaj. Es ist über 5 ha groß und mit 1200 ver-schiedenen Pflanzenarten, Seen, Bächen und Brücken eingerichtet. Auf dem An-wesen wird eine einmalige Veranstaltung organisiert: die Weihnachtsgeschichte, in Europa die größte dieser Art. Dann leuchten auf dem Anwesen über 2 Millionen Lampen. Außerdem findet auf dem Anwesen jedes Jahr auch eine Ostergeschichte statt, in der Hühner, Küken, Hasen und Ostereier ihre ganz eigene Geschichte er-zählen.

••• Natale e Pasqua con la famiglia Salaj - Sulle pendi-ci della Moslavačka gora, in un pittoresco paesaggio col-linare si trova l'agriturismo della famiglia Salaj di oltre 5 ettari, con 1200 specie di pi-ante, laghi, ruscelli, sentieri e ponticelli. Nella loro fatto-ria si organizza il più grande spettacolo di luci natalizie in questa parte d'Europa, la Storia di Natale, per cui vengono accese più di 2 mil-ioni di luci. Ogni anno qui si svolge anche la Storia della Pasqua in cui la gallina, i pulcini, i conigli e le uova raccontano la loro fiaba.

Romani Ethnic House The Romani Ethnic House that presents the life of the indig-enous Romani group Lovari, one of the eight groups still living in Croatia, is a first such house in Croatia and Europe. This unique tourist and cul-tural building provides both an attractive and an authen-tic insight into the largely un-known Romani history, tradi-tion, language and customs, which are an inseparable part of Croatia’s rich heritage. Christmas and Easter Fairy-Tale of the Salaj Family The picturesque hills and slopes of Moslavačka Gora are home to the Salaj family es-tate, where over 5 hectares of land are decorated with 1,200 species of plants, lakes, creeks and arranged paths and bridg-es. The estate hosts the Christ-mas Fairy-Tale, a one-of-a-kind and the biggest lighting show in this part of Europe, when the estate is decorated with more than 2 million lights. The Easter Fairy-Tale also takes place at the estate each year, where the hens, chicks, bunnies and Easter eggs tell their Easter story.

Romani Ethnic House The Romani Ethnic House that presents the life of the indig-enous Romani group Lovari, one of the eight groups still living in Croatia, is a first such house in Croatia and Europe. This unique tourist and cul-tural building provides both an attractive and an authen-tic insight into the largely un-known Romani history, tradi-tion, language and customs, which are an inseparable part of Croatia’s rich heritage. It also displays numerous dis-tinctive Lovari products, such as lavender that was once tra-ditionally grown by this Ro-mani group, and gives you the chance to see and try some of the original Romani food and drinks.

Es handelt sich um ein einzi-gartiges Objekt, sowohl für den Tourismus, als auch die Kultur. Touristen bietet es eine attraktive und authentische Darstellung der unbekannten Geschichte, Tradition, Sprache und Sitten der Lovara an (z. B. Lavendel als traditionelle Pflanze der Lovara). Es werden auch authentische Gerichte und Getränke der Roma vorg-estellt und verkostet.

Christmas and Easter Fairy-Tale of the Salaj Family The picturesque hills and slopes of Moslavačka Gora are home to the Salaj family es-tate, where over 5 hectares of land are decorated with 1,200 species of plants, lakes, creeks and arranged paths and bridg-es. The estate hosts the Christ-mas Fairy-Tale, a one-of-a-kind and the biggest lighting show in this part of Europe, when the estate is decorated with more than 2 million lights. The Easter Fairy-Tale also takes place at the estate each year, where the hens, chicks, bunnies and Easter eggs tell their Easter story.

••• Weihnachten und Ostern bei der Familie SalajAn den Berghängen in Moslavina, inmitten einer malerischen Landschaft mit zahlreichen Hügeln, befindet sich das Anwesen der Fami-lie Salaj. Es ist über 5 ha groß und mit 1200 verschiedenen Pflanzenarten, Seen, Bächen und Brücken eingerichtet. Auf dem Anwesen wird eine einmalige Veranstaltung or-ganisiert: die Weihnachtsge-schichte, in Europa die größte dieser Art. Dann leuchten auf dem Anwesen über 2 Millionen Lampen. Außerdem findet auf dem Anwesen jedes Jahr auch eine Ostergeschichte statt, in der Hühner, Küken, Hasen und Ostereier ihre ganz eigene Geschichte erzählen.
