Rights and Responsibilities

Training and SupervisionA worker shall receive Safety Orientation, training, instruction and direction specific to the workplace and tasks that they are required to perform.

General Duties of WorkersWorkers have the duty to take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and others at the workplace.

Right to Refuse Unsafe WorkWorkers shall not carry out any work that would endanger themselves or any others.

WorkSafe BC defines Due Diligence as: “Taking all reasonable care to protect the well being of employees or co-workers.”

General Workplace Hazards

Violent, Threatening or Abusive Behaviour Any person who is subject to or witnesses an act of violent, threatening or abusive behaviour is expected to report the incidentto Human Resources, Health and Safety, their immediate supervisor,Dean or Administrative Director immediately.

Health and Safety

WHMIS (Controlled Products Legislation) All workers must understand the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and the use of Material Safety Data Sheets. (MSDS)

Health and Safety

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)• Employees are required to be trained in the use of, and to use, all required personal protective equipment relevant and appropriate to the job.

• An employer/supervisor can send a worker home without pay for safety, personal protection equipment infractions.

Working Alone or in Isolation• Selkirk College employees must not work alone or in isolation without a risk assessment and management plan developed with their supervisor. Policy 6410: Working Alone or in Isolation.

Reporting Injuries and Incidents

Injuries• Employees should report all injuries, no matter how minor, to a college first aid attendant and their supervisor immediately.

• Seemingly minor injuries can develop into serious conditions.

• Delays in reporting injuries, delay compensation for medical treatment and wages.

• If you are injured at work and receive medical attention without seeing a college First Aid attendant you will need to fill out a “Workers Report of Injury Form”. This form can be downloaded from the H&S web page.

Incidents• All incidents causing bodily harm and/or property damage, and all near misses with the potential to cause bodily harm and/or property damage, must be reported to your supervisor and Health and Safety Coordinator.

• Incidents must be investigated and recorded on an Incident Report form; the completed form is then submitted to the Health and Safety Coordinator.

• Incident investigations are to be completed by the supervisor, and worker or worker representative. A Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee member is desirable.

Emergency Procedures

Fire• Identify the locations of fire extinguishers, fire alarm pulls, an exit and alternate exit in the areas you work.

• When an alarm sounds exit quickly and calmly by the nearest clear exit.

• Move away from the building to an emergency assembly location.

• Do not leave the grounds or re-enter the building until the all clear is given.

• Familiarize yourself with the college Fire and Emergency Evacuation Plan.

• Become familiar with the procedures for the evacuation of persons with disabilities. (campus phone directory, H&S web page)

Emergency ProceduresFirst Aid• Ensure the accident scene is safe, make sure there is no danger to you and then assess danger to the patient. Do not make yourself another victim.

• If the individual is unconscious send someone to dial 9-1-1 immediately, then contact first aid. Ask them to get back to you. • If you are alone, loudly call for help, no response? Leave the patient and get help.

• Do not move the patient unless there is a significant risk of further injuries by leaving them where found.

• When you report an emergency situation by phone remember to give your name, exact location and the nature of the emergency.

• Contact numbers for first aid is specific to the campus location and can be found on page 2 of the college phone directory.

The Health and Safety Coordinator can conduct an ergonomic assessment of your workstation and equipment .

Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee• Selkirk College Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees (JOHSC), are made up of employee (worker) representatives and employer (management) representatives.

• Members have the responsibility to work in a cooperative spirit to promote Health and Safety.

• Committees identify and help resolve Health and Safety issues at all Selkirk College campuses and other areas where college employees might work.

• Each campus with 20 or more employees has a JOHSC, smaller campuses select a worker representative to attend quarterly JOHS steering committee meetings.

• JOHSC members and committee meeting minutes are listed on the Health and Safety web page.
