Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?complexities which can arise from NOT making a Will.WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK OR HOPE!
IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.
YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting or Single.
MARRIED: In the event of the death of a married person, the Intestacy rules divide the Estate into shares, with a share going to the surviving husband or wife (the spouse). The amount a spouse can inherit is restricted to an amount set by the Government.
THE POPULAR BELIEF that a spouse automatically inherits everything is simply not true. This is because your nearest blood-relations (children, parents, brothers, sisters etc.) are also entitled to take a share under the Intestacy Rules inherit, with the rising values of Estates, the SPOUSE'S SHARE could be the smallest one.
FACT: If you have not made a Will, even your life insurance policies will not be paid until probate has been granted, unless they are written into trust! (Probate will take many months, sometimes years, to be granted!).
FACT: If your Children are orphaned and you have not appointed a guardian in a Will, then Social Services will decide who looks after them, including allocating them to Foster Parents).
FACT: If there are no surviving members of your family, the whole Estate would go to the Crown (Government).
COHABITING: Thousands of people live together without getting married. Unfortunately, most think that, after a few years together or if they have become a Common Law husband or wife and have same rights as a married person. Let there be no doubt about this. If you live with another person unmarried (including single-sex couples), with respect to finance and inheritance you are known as a Cohabitee and do not have the same rights as a married person. The general term, Common Law, means law-based judicial decisions and custom.
SO, if you are Cohabitee, the information on single people is more appropriate to you.
SINGLE: If a single person dies without a Will, the line of Inheritance can be complicated and can often involve relatives you have never even met!
HERE WE GO... first, you children will inherit your whole Estate - if there are no surviving children, next in line are your grandchildren - if you have no grandchildren, then both your parents - if both have died before you, then your brothers and/or nieces - if none, then your cousins (however far removed) and, if no cousins, everything goes to the Government... phew!
IF you are single and without a Will, I can hear you are thinking: 'Well, that's OK, it will go to my children, anyway'). That may be partly true, but what is also true is that it will take months and, possibly, years to sort out your affairs (obtain Probate), and the Solicitors who sort this out will charge THOUSANDS OF POUNDS for their work. This is money that, for the sake of making your Will (69), you could have left your Children!
Even if you have no Children or close family, many people would want their Estate to go to CLOSE FRIENDS or a CHARITY, rather than the GOVERNMENT OR UNKNOWN RELATIONS.

CONTENTSDECEMBER 20139 Pay a visit to Goldenhill WMC on Boxing Day, and you can enjoy the numerous talents of the duo known as The Cameleonz, who have shared the stage with the likes of Peter Andre, Olly Murs and Labyrinth. Marcus and Lis sold over 10,000 of their debut-single hitting the Top 20 midweeks on the official UK charts, and, last year, won the 'Best Duo' in the Mercury Awards 2012. The Cameleonz is a 'hi-tec' instrumental duo, playing 50s/60s music, right up to current chart-hits.
12 Theatre-goers can 'spot' a rare production of 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians' this Christmas as Newcastle's New Vic stages the children's classic until Saturday, February 1st, 2014. Adapted and directed by New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins, the show sits in the world of Dodie Smith's 1956 novel, with original 'Swing' music performed live by a talented cast of actor-musicians and dynamic Lindy Hop dance routines taking over the theatre-in-the-round.
13 More than a century after they were first published, the ghost stories of M.R. James retain their power to terrify and amuse. Robert Lloyd Parry's gripping one-man show retells four of the earliest (and eeriest) of them - 'Canon Alberic's Scrap-book', 'The Mezzotint', 'Lost Hearts' and 'A Warning to the Curious' - in The MET Studio at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre during the evenings of Friday, December 20th, and Saturday, December 21st.
14 At Congleton Town Hall, on Saturday, December 21st, Congleton Choral Society's Christmas Concert offers Carols for Choir and Audience, featuring the Fantasia on Christmas Carols by Ralph Vaughan Williams (plus a few surprises! First performed at the 1912 Three Choirs Festival at Hereford Cathedral, the popular Fantasia comprises the English folk carols, 'The truth sent from above', 'Come, all you worthy gentleman' and 'On Christmas night, all Christians sing', interposed with brief, orchestral quotations from other carols, such as 'The First Nowell'.
18 The North Staffs. Accordion Club has The Fettlers lined up for its Christmas Party at Holditch Miners' Welfare Club, Chesterton, on Tuesday, December 17th. The Fettlers are a duo (accordion and guitar), and are lauded as a "great act for a Christmas party". Besides this, there will be the usual mass carol-playing and feature-spots from members - and a great buffet!
24 Yes, it's hard to believe that autumn is over, and we have the long, cold winter months ahead of us! With this in mind, the staff at The Croft Veterinary Clinic, Newcastle-under-Lyme, have put together some seasonal tips to keep your pets fit and healthy. Chocolate is often found in abundance at this time of the year and poses a significant hazard to dogs. In general, the higher the cocoa content, the more toxic the chocolate.

Banish those 'Winter Blues' this Xmas!!ROBERTS' Bakery Band will be raising the roof at Tatton Park, in Cheshire, this Christmas and cooking up a seasonal selection of brass band music.
Its concert in Tatton's stately home on Saturday, December 14th, is the last of a series of Christmas concerts taking place there this year.
Guaranteed to banish those 'Winter Blues', Tatton's concert series has long established itself as one of the highlights of the festive season, making fantastic Christmas presents for friends and loved ones.
The Northern Chamber Orchestra, joined by Vocaliser choir from Saints Peter and Paul Catholic College, Widnes, will be commencing festivities with an evening of classical Christmas favourites and carols on Thursday, December 12th.
This is followed on Friday, December 13th, by the City of Chester Male Voice Choir.
The Christmas concert season ends on a high note on Saturday, December 14th, with an evening of brass band music by the Northwich-based, internationally-touring Roberts' Bakery Band, which will treat the audience to a repertoire of classical, traditional and popular music.
Said Tatton Park Events manager, Bridget Roberts: "The Tatton Park Concerts are firmly embedded as a 'must see' element of our Christmas festivities. Guests return year on year to enjoy the fantastic range of music and entertainment on offer.
"We all look forward to these concerts and Christmas just wouldn't be the same without them. Each year, the programme changes to keep things exciting and new, but the skill and talent shown by these musicians never alters. A truly wonderful night out!"
All concerts take place in the Tenants' Hall of Tatton's stunning neo-classical mansion.
Visitors to the evening concert performances have the opportunity to stroll though the beautifully-decorated mansion, which, this year, reflects a glittering White Christmas reminiscent of Alpine schemes which the Egerton family would have enjoyed in their 19th century travels.
Snowy landscapes are reflected in the strikingly-decorated staterooms dressed with
flowers, foliage, greenery and other natural material from the parkland and gardens. Concert-goers will be able to enjoy a warm winter drink before the performances commence at 8pm.
Pre-concert suppers are available in the Stables restaurant or in the new cosy Gardener's Cottage tearoom.
Tickets for the Northern Chamber
Orchestra on December 12th, are priced at 20 (under-18s, 12), and for the City of Chester Male Voice Choir (on December 13th) cost 15; those for the Roberts' Bakery Band on Saturday, December 14th, are also priced at 15.
The price for all three concerts includes free car-park entry (usually 5).
For NCO bookings, call 0161 247 2220, and, for the Roberts' Bakery Band and Chester Male Voice Choir ones, telephone (01625) 374400.
A DRESSED Christmas Tree in the Cupola Hall.

Enjoy a fun-packed, wacky, festive season in 2013THAT'S the message from all those involved in the latest, Yuletide spectacular at Burslem's Queen's Theatre!
Children's creations, Ben, Bob and Bernie Bloonee, will be appearing in a street near you during 2013's festive season, handing out leaflet's for this year's pantomime, 'Cinderella'.
With a book coming this year and having just taken receipt of full-size character-costumes from mainland China, the creators of 'The Bloonees', Phil 'Solo' Simpkin, Steve Ball and Carl Washington, are including them into the 'Cinderella' theme as something special and different for the area's youngsters.
'Bloonees' are creating a stir everywhere they go, because "children just love Balloons - and especially flying ones"!
2013's panto sees the return of our own, local lad, Daz Cyples, dancing his tribute act to Michael Jackson.
Darren has become a fantastic
'wow' with audiences throughout the Midlands, because of his impeccable dance-routines, and he is joined this year by teenagers who dance to the highest standards and promise to be a 'Thriller' to all who attend this exciting show.
That favourite pair of wacky dames, Deno Bradbury and Kerry Riley, will also be displaying their usual panache in getting into fixes throughout the fun-packed show, which runs from Friday, December 20th, to Saturday, December 31st.
Carl Washington is playing Buttons, and local thespian, Rebecca Jones, will be treading the theatre's boards as the eponymous heroine, Cinderella.
And, for a Christmas with a difference, the best Bon Jovi Tribute in the land is coming to Burslem on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28TH, so, lovers of American Rock, don't miss this show delivered by BON GIOVI (the front-man and, indeed, all the players, are awesome!)

Hemmings JewellersThe nest collection of Christmas gift ideas.
Untangling a furball of a problemTHEATRE-GOERS can 'spot' a rare production of 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians' this Christmas, as the New Vic Theatre at Newcastle stages the children's classic.
Adapted and directed by New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins, the new show sits in the world of Dodie Smith's 1956 novel, with original Swing music performed live by a talented cast of actor musicians and dynamic Lindy Hop dance routines taking over the theatre-in-the-round.
Said Theresa Heskins: "Of course, as soon as I began work on the production, I realised why it's done so rarely; the hundred-plus dogs conjured up in the title are only half the story.
"We make puppies grown from minutes-old, the Dalmatians adopt a disguise, and, of course, they're aided in their quest by all the dogs of England and some feline friends, too. I hope that audiences will be charmed by the ways we've untangled this furball of a problem."
Fast-moving and ingeniously-staged. 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians (which runs until Saturday, February 1st, 2014) has been brought to life by the same creative team behind the New Vic's record-breaking 'A Christmas Carol', 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Peter Pan'.
Theresa Heskins's in-the-round Christmas productions have achieved both critical acclaim and popular success in recent years, and 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians' looks set to be no different, with nearly 25,000 children expected to see the show.
Commented Heskins: "It's important to me that children's early experiences of theatre are the best-possible, because that will mean mean people from a wide range of backgrounds coming back to this artform for the rest of their lives.
"In fact, a quarter of the New Vic's visits each year are by children aged 16 and under - a fact of which we are very proud.
"The great thing about theatre-in-the-round is
that audiences feel so much a part of the show, and that's one of the reasons that young people are so gripped by our work."
Joining the professional cast on stage is a team of thirty, talented, young performers.
The creative team includes the talents of award-winning television and film composer, James Atherton; TMA-winning lighting designer, Daniella Beattie (Nest Lighting Design 2009), and the New Vic's talented workshop.
Tickets for 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians' are priced at 14-21 (concessions available), and are available by telephoning the Box Office on (01782) 717962 or online by visiting www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Festive season terror at Stafford!!FOUR of the most popular of the ghost stories of M.R. James can be enjoyed in a one-man performance at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre before Christmas.Decades after they were first published in the early-20th century, these tales retain their power to terrify and amuse, and Robert Lloyd Parry's gripping, one-man show retells four of the eeriest. Many of the stories were written as Christmas Eve entertainments and read aloud to friends by the author. On Friday, December 20th, 'A Pleasing Terror' features 'Canon Alberic's Scrap-book' (in which a young, Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a mediaeval town in the French Pyrenees) and 'The Mezzotint' (wherein a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator in Oxford). On Saturday, December 21st, 'A Warning To The Curious' offers 'Lost Hearts' (among the first stories that
the author wrote and offering one of his most memorable villains, the seemingly mild, but predatory, scholar, Mr. Abney), which is paired with what is, perhaps, James's most poignant and personal work, 'A Warning To The Curious', in which a young archaeologist is haunted and hunted by the guardian of an ancient treasure; the English seaside has never looked so menacing.Plaudits for the shows include "Wonderful, magical storytelling" (The Daily Mail) and "Storytelling at its finest" (The Stage).Monatgue Rhodes James (1862-1836) was an English author, mediaeval scholar and provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905-18) and Eton College (1918-36).Both shows take place in the theatre's MET Studio, a unique, 120-capacity studio
space, equipped with the latest sound, lighting and back-up equipment.Tickets for 'A Pleasing Terror' and 'A Warning To The Curious' (which commence at 7.30pm) are priced at 10 (no concessions), and you can save 5 by booking for both shows for 15.You can contact Stafford Gatehouse Theatre on (01785) 254653.

Culinary 'first' for Anita & David!!A WELCOMING, cosy pub, with a genuine, country-style ambience, this historic hostelry at Kingsley Holt (near Cheadle) is currently enjoying a memorable 'first'! For, The Blacksmiths Arms, which boasts a pedigree, covering four centuries (it was known to be an inn back in 1714), has made its debut as a commercial food operation - thanks to 'mine hosts', Anita and David (plus Family and Team). The village pub offers discerning diners great-value, traditional, home-cooked fare all day, six days a week (12 noon-8pm, Tuesday-Saturday, and 12 noon-7.30pm, Sunday), in addition to 5-8pm on Monday.
All tastes (and ages) are amply 'catered for', with a 'Golden Generation Menu' for seniors, served between 12 noon and 3pm, Tuesday-Friday, with the main course priced at 4, 5.50 (two courses) and 7 (three-courser), while the children's menu (featuring steaks, gammons etc., like the adults' one) is available from just 4.Meanwhile, lovers of the traditional Sunday luncheon (served, naturally, 'with all the trimmings') can plump for the main course 'roast' for only 7.50, with two- and three-course repasts offered at (respectively) 10 and 12.50.From Monday, December 2nd, until Christmas Eve, readers can enjoy the Shawe Park Road's Christmas Fayre Menu (Monday-Saturday), priced at 15.95 (adults) and 9.95 (children under-12).A choice of four Starters comprises Home-Made Leek, Potato & Cheddar Cheese Soup; Grilled Black Pudding, Bacon & Onion, served in a Peppercorn Sauce; Deep-Fried Breaded Mushrooms, with a Garlic Mayonnaise, Dip & Salad Garni; and Deep-Fried Wholetail Scampi, with Tartare Sauce &
Salad Garni. For Mains, readers can choose from Roast Turkey Breast or Roast Beef, both served with two Yorkshire Puddings, Roast Potatoes, Creamy Mash & Fresh Vegetables; or Salmon Fillet, in a Sweet Chilli Sauce & Hand-Cut Chips; or 8oz. Gammon Steak, served with Egg, Pineapple, Mushrooms & Onion-Rings, Hand-Cut Chips & Fresh Vegetables.
(Vegetarian choices are available, on request). After this, there's a trio of scrumptious desserts (Christmas Pudding, Strawberry & White Chocolate Cheesecake and Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake) to contemplate, and, to finish off the festive meal, a Mince Pie!Entertainment in the form of perennially-popular karaoke sessions is offered each Saturday evening, and 2014 will be welcomed in on New Year's Eve with Karaoke and a Disco. This friendly 'local' (which attracts people from all points of the compass) is 'big' on traditional, cask-conditioned beers, and 'real ale' aficionados can quaff pints of its popular trio of regular brews: Marston's Pedigree, Wychwood Brewery's Hobgoblin and Marston's Burton Bitter, plus a brace of constantly-changing 'guests'.Needless to say, a full range of 'keg' drinks (including two ciders, three lagers and Draught Guinness), plus top-quality spirits and wines, is also available. The village pub is very much a traditional venue, and it boasts excellent facilities for cribbage, darts and skittles. It is very much a charity-oriented venue, and regulars raise as much money as possible for a different, deserving cause each month.Recent recipients include the Children's Trust, Churnet Valley First Responders and the 2013 RBL Poppy Appeal, and, on New Year's Eve, 19-years-old Amber Keates will be undergoing a 'head-shave' in aid of Cancer Research. Anita and David took over on Monday, June 3rd, this year, and, while he enjoys a working-lifetime within the licensed trade, the move to The Blacksmiths Arms constitutes a 'return home' for Anita, who grew up in the village of Kingsley Holt.

Kay & Gareth's 'Clayhanger Suite' is a 'must' venue!!ON top of everything else that they offer readers at their Burslem town centre pub, Kay and Gareth also feature a premier-class function room!
Comfortably accommodating between thirty and forty guests, 'The Clayhanger Suite' (pictured right) is, quite simply, an ideal venue for every type of social and celebratory functions and occasions, including christenings, birthday parties and business meetings and conferences.
Named after the series of four novels (published from 1910-18) by that famous son of the Potteries, Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) - and, interestingly, The Swan is located close to narrow Clayhanger Street, which runs alongside the iconic Wedgwood Institute on Queen Street, adjacent to Swan Square - The Clayhanger Suite also specialises in intimate wedding
receptions.
However, there is so much more on offer here!
Saturday, August 17th, saw Kay and Gareth celebrate their first anniversary as 'mine hosts' at the three-storey, neo-Georgian hostelry, which re-opened to a grateful public last year, following the completion of a 420,000 refurbishment-project.
The Swan is (justifiably) acclaimed for its superb, home-cooked food is served seven days a week (12 noon-2.30pm, Monday-Saturday, with a traditional 'roast' Sunday
lunch available between 12 noon and 4pm).
Open throughout 2013's forthcoming festive season, it is offering a full Christmas Fayre and Buffet Menu in December, with a two-course lunchtime repast priced at just 13.95 and a three-course evening meal costing only 17.95.
Gareth and Kay operate an ultra-popular 'Happy Hour' (12 noon-7pm, Monday-Thursday), and their family business features a great choice of top-quality drinks, including Carling lager, Caffrey's Bitter, Worthington Creamflow, Thatcher's Cider and Cask Ales Award 2013-winning traditional brews from Doombar.
Located in Swan Square (adjacent to The George Hotel), the pub also serves a variety of multi-flavoured, cocktail-style 'Trifle Shots'.
You can enjoy an Acoustic Night with Arthur's Table every Sunday from 9pm to 12 midnight, and each Wednesday features an Acoustic Gathering with Frank & Friends.

Burslem & TunstallAt Christmas Time
Carl & John are passionate about Burslem!!MID-SEPTEMBER saw a strikingly-attractive, new business in the heart of 'The Mother Town of the Potteries' open its doors to an appreciative public.
Everyone, who enjoys top-quality food (all freshly-prepared), should pay a visit to Burslem Cake Fairy Caf, where you can tuck into a wide range of breakfasts, home-made soups, sandwiches, paninis and jacket potatoes, plus hot and cold beverages.
Open six days week (10am-4pm, Monday-Saturday), the caf'e also lives up to its by naming by tempting discerning diners with a
selection of scrumptious, home-made cakes!
The delicious soups are served on a daily-changing basis, and lovers of the full, traditional, English breakfast can choose to have your eggs scrambled or poached, as well as fried.
And there's more good news for 2014, too!
For, co-owners, Carl and his partner, John, are set to launch their trademark celebration cakes - for every occasion (weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, retirements etc.) and featuring a host of themes - in the New Year.
Located in Market Place (next to KFC and adjacent to Burslem's most imposing landmark, the Old Town Hall), the business also offers a private meeting room on
its upper floor.
"Since opening in September, we've had a good response and already enjoy a lot of repeat-business from customers," said Carl.
"We're both passionate about Burslem, and feel that it has a great future, once town centre parking-problems are sorted out!"

Special oers for Christmas & New Year with this advert
Youthful enthusiasm took centre-stage!!YOUNGSTERS were very much to the fore during the Christmas Lights Switch-Ons in these neighbouring towns in the north of Stoke-on-Trent during late-November.
Schoolchildren were the 'star-turns' in Tunstall's Tower Square during the town's festive spectacular on the evening of Friday, November 22nd.
Pupils from Tunstall's St. Mary's Church of England Primary School and St. Wilfrid's Catholic Academy delighted the assembled throng of hundreds of families with a performance of Yuletide songs and poetry.
At the same time, scouts, beavers and explorers from Goldenhill and Stockton Brook, as well as Tunstall, served up 'fast food', in the shape of 'burgers, on a cold night, also helping to run a fund-raising tombola.
This year, the festive lights were partially financed
by monies from the ward budgets of local councillors, Dave Conway and Lee Wanger, while Tunstall Chamber of Trade worked hard throughout 2013 to raise funds for the event, which it also organised.
Commented Chamber of Trade Chairman, Bill McDonald: "We were a bit concerned that there wouldn't be the funding to make it happen this year, but we've had an enormous amount of support from local companies and our councillors, and we're very grateful.
"The council has made a smashing job of the lights; I think they look even better than last year."
The fun started at 5pm, and the official switch-on of the Christmas Lights took place two hours later.

Tower Square Tunstall01782 826722
Following the same format as previous years' events, entertainment took place from the Tower Square stage, with special guest presenter, radio DJ and TV presenter, Verity Hilton, hosting the occasion.
Volunteers handed out 'glow-bands and necklaces' and 400 free mince-pies, and prizes and gifts were presented on-stage.
Other festive attractions included magician and children's entertainer, Tony King; a Fun Fair (courtesy of Tunstall-based Stanworth's); a Santa's Grotto; and a number of food-outlets, while Tunstall Rotary Club was on-hand to bring Santa Claus all the way from the North Pole to meet local youngsters.
Exactly one week later (on Friday, November 29th), three-years-old cancer sufferer, Frankie Allen, was the guest-of-honour, as she turned on the festive lights in Burslem's Swan Square, watched by hundreds of people.
Among the assembled spectators were many of those who
helped to launch a fund-raising campaign in her name, after little Frankie was diagnosed with leukaemia in August of this year.
Friends and relatives started 'Frankie's Fight' to realise monies for a variety of worthy causes, including the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and Birmingham's Children's Hospital, where she is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
Frankie's mother, Karen, said that the family had previously never attended the Christmas Lights Switch-On in Burslem, adding: "Frankie was not well at all last Christmas; she had a virus and was in bed for about three days."
The event was organised by the Our Burslem group, which took over the task, following Stoke-on-Trent City Council's decision to cut its funding.
"We formed the group last year, after learning that the council refused to fund the Christmas lights any more," explained Our Burslem member, Tracy Machin.
"We managed to raise the money we needed within days, and the town looked great."
Attractions at the switch-on event (which took place between 5.30pm and 6pm) included stalls, performances from street-entertainers and (naturally) a visit from Santa Claus himself.
