WITH Gloucester Rugby being onlydays away now from its opening matchagainst Northampton Saints at FranklinsGardens on Sunday, 4th September, wewent along to Kingsholm to hear fromGloucester’s local lad, Andy Hazell, onwhat life is like as they begin an excitingnew season.Andy is Gloucester’s longest serving

player, with 244 games since his debutin 1997 and is signed up to stay atGloucester until the summer of 2013.Being a local lad through and through,

from his early school days at HempstedPrimary School to Severn Vale School,Andy says nothing could prise him away from hisGloucester roots. While at Severn Vale his sports master suggested rugby

was more of his game than football, and Andy went alongto the under 19’s trial at Oxstalls. He was picked by coachRichard Hill and put forward to go professional. After a tough six months of challenging training, with

the support of his family, he proved his worth and wasdelighted to be rewarded with a contract. Andy trainsnearly every day, and says “Gloucester has a specialatmosphere, great stadium and fantastic supporters.”

His family are amongst his greatestfans and avid critics. He has twoyoung daughters who often sporttheir rugby shirts to support theirdad. Being a Gloucester boy he feelsa special responsibility to his fans. Beit his cousins in the stand or his fansin the supermarket – being a localplayer means he is certainly kept onhis toes!A specialist open-side flanker,

Andy has won 7 caps for Englandand was in the training squad for twoworld cups. When asked which clubs he

considers to be Gloucester’s greatest rivals, Andysuggested Worcester Warriors and Bath – who visitKingsholm on the 10th and 24th September respectively. He feels a huge sense of pride playing for Gloucesterand is looking forward to the new season with greatanticipation, playing alongside fellow old favouritessuch as Lesley Vainikolo and Peter Buxton as well asGloucester’s new signings for the 2011-2012 season.

SUE RYDER Leckhampton Court Hospice has organisedthree great events for autumn. You can have a wonderful dayout with all the family, enjoy the benefit of a bit of healthy exerciseor put your business acumen to the test (or all three!) – andhelp raise funds to support local people when they need it most. The Hospice provides beds and specialist palliative care for

residents from all over Gloucestershire – an important servicethat requires as much financial support as possible. However,it’s not all about ‘hand outs’ – Sue Ryder want those contributingto benefit from their involvement too.

Autumn FayreThe Autumn Fayre takes place on Saturday 10th September

and promises to be a great occasion for all ages. There will bea bouncy castle, face painters, a barbecue and interesting stalls. The entertainment starts with the Music Man at 11.15am and

rounds off at 3.15pm with the Gloucestershire Morrris Mendancing through Cheltenham en route to finishing with a flourishat the Hospice. Tickets are available on the gate (which opensat 11am) – only £2 for adults and £1 for children. If you’re unable to join in on the day, but still wish to help,

why not donate a bottle for the tombola in advance or, perhaps,a prize suitable for the raffle?

Ride for RyderIf you are looking for a challenge and a focus for your fitness

regime, you can support the Hospice by taking part in their annualcycling challenge – Ride for Ryder – which takes place on Sunday2nd October. It starts from Cheltenham Race Course and takes in 45 miles

of breathtaking Gloucestershire countryside. Entry is £12 inadvance and £15 on the day, and Sue Ryder asks that each cyclistaims to raise £75 for the hospice and, even if 45 miles ‘in thesaddle’ holds no fear for you, why not just take on the fundraisingchallenge instead?

To put your effort into perspective – £75 is equivalent to threesessions of physio-therapy that can help a patient with a lifethreatening condition with their mobility and thereby their qualityof life.

Big Wigs Business ChallengeIf you’d prefer to put your entrepreneurial flair to use for a

good cause – enter a team in the Big Wigs Business Challengeand Sue Ryder will give you £50 to take away and grow intomore cash for the Hospice over four months. For more information about any of the above please

contact Sue Ryder direct – details below.

Everyone knows the saying ‘every Tom, Dick & Harry’ butfew people are aware that it is claimed that the original Tom,Dick & Harry, the highwaymen, actually operated inGloucestershire. In spite of today’s romantic views, thehighwaymen of the past were no romantic heroes and havemore in common with street muggers today. Tom, Dick andHarry Dunsdon were one of the notorious gangs that preyedon the coaches from Gloucester to Oxford.

From Fulbrook, just on the other side of the county borderin Oxfordshire, the Dunsdons were sons of a respectablefamily but in spite of their more favourable surroundings thethree rapidly became dangerous criminals. As well asrobbing the passing coaches Tom, Dick & Harry robbed thehouses of local gentry.

One night, in a local inn, the trio were overheardplanning their next crime and the constables were alerted– the trap was set. Their target was Tangley Hall, and whenthe constables lying in wait saw an arm appear through theshutter that was normally used to look at visitors and try tolocate the door key theysprung into action. Theylassoed the arm and tied it tothe door handle so thecriminal could not escape.Outside the constables heardswearing followed by a shoutof ‘cut it’ and the arm fellthrough the door and thethree escaped before the doorwas opened. Dick was never seen again – it was assumedthat he had bled to death following the amputation.

The other two continued their lives of crime but, as withall criminals, they were eventually caught and taken toGloucester for trial. Here they were found guilty, sentencedto death and hanged at Gloucester gaol in 1784. Followingexecutiion their corpses were hung in metal gibbets (likecages) from what became known as ‘The Gibbet Tree’(pictured, courtesy of Brian Robert Marshall) – a stout oak– which was located a couple of miles beyond Burford.Whether the popular saying was based on these three isup for debate without any conclusive proof, but it seemsmore than likely that the popular phrase was based on theDunsdons.

CAFÉ RENÉ has a great reputation forserving superb food, so we thoughtwe’d give it a try.Apart from the edible variety, Café

Exceptionalstandards inevery aspect

‘Homemade Steak & Ale Pie’ with pan friednew potatoes in rosemary and garlic, andfresh vegetables – an extremely generousside dish of cabbage, carrots, beans, peasand courgette. The pastry lid was lovely –not just full of air – and the tender steak wasenhanced with the taste of the ale comingthrough.

A beautiful 16oz T-bone was my maincourse indulgence – perfectly cooked (Ienjoy ‘medium rare’) with a ‘melt in themouth’ texture. While everything on myplate was just as I’d hoped for, the chipswere without doubt the best I have evereaten in a restaurant. I expected thesteak to be sensational, and it was – butthe chips were an unexpectedpleasure.Conscious of the need to tell you

about the desserts too, we were bothinitially disappointed to leave some of theamplemain course accompaniments – but, later, we were happy that we had!‘Homemade Cheesecake with Fruits of

the Forest’ and ‘Homemade Lemon Tartwith Raspberries’ were our dessertselections. Both were served on heavy slateplatters, beautifully presented withblueberries, raspberries, kumquat andswirls of chocolate and raspberry coulis. The lemon tart – also accompanied by

mint leaves and a vanilla stick – was sharpand refreshing. The cheesecake was justheavenly – a wonderful combination oftextures and flavours. We thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful

and every aspect of our dinner at CaféRené – we can’t wait to try the rest of themenu!

4¾ miles (7.5km) ~ 2½ hoursEasy terrain

A Park in the layby opposite The Seven Springs Inn,off theA436. Turn left on to theA436 and walk up thefootpath to the roundabout.

1 It used to be held that the springs issuing fromthis small hollow below the A436 marked thebeginning of the Thames. The Latin inscription reads:Hic Tuus - O tamesine Pater Septemgeminusfons (‘Here O father Thames is thy sevenfoldsource’).

Although the springs lie at 750ft (228m) – the highestpoint from which water flows into the Thames – itis now generally acknowledged that the river risesat Thameshead, 3 miles (5km) south-west ofCirencester.

B Turn left, then immediately left again on to theminor road. This is the CotswoldWay, which is clearlywaymarked. You will be following this for much ofthe walk.C Turn right at the hedge and follow the left-handfield boundary. Continue through the copse, thenalong the edge of the ridge for about 1 mile (1½km)to a junction of paths atop a rocky step. This area isCharlton Kings Common and is open access land.

2 There is a lot to see in this breathtaking view withCheltenham spread out below the scarp. To the rightyou can follow the escarpment as it curves aroundto Cleeve Hill which is the highest point in theCotswolds. Out on the plain ahead rises thedistinctive shape of the Malverns, composed of someof the oldest rocks in England and Wales. Furtherto the west the view includes Gloucester, May Hillin the Forest of Dean, and the first of theWelsh Hills.

D Go straight on and keep to the right of the fenceto the triangulation point. With the trig point to yourright, continue straight on along the path, until yousee a sign pointing downhill to the Devil’s Chimney. It’s worth making a detour and going down to see thislandmark. It’s to your right once you’ve reached theseat on the cliff edge. Head back up to the footpathagain then continue southwards along the track, pastthe quarry to the road.

3 This distinctive, isolated spike of rock is knownas the Devil's Chimney and is a popular locallandmark. Its exact origin is not known for certain– whether it is the result of differential erosion, aquarryman’s joke or a genuine relic of quarrying.Climbing is prohibited to limit erosion.

E Turn left onto the road. You will pass another carpark on your left. Turn right into the field immediatelybefore Hartley Farm and follow the wall on the leftto a stile.F Cross the stile and head half-right to the left-handcorner of the plantation. Continue along its edge, withthe plantation to your right, to a stile by a pump house.G Cross the stile and continue ahead with the woodon your left, to the stile on the left just before thecorner of the field. Cross this and follow the woodlandon the left for about 200yds (180m)H Cross over to the woodland on the right, carrying straight on at its end to a stile. Cross the stile

and carry straight on with the field boundary on yourleft until you reach the main road.I Cross the road and turn left, then right on to thefootpath on the other side. Follow the path with thefield boundary on your left to a stile on the left in thecorner of the field. Cross the stile following the righthand field boundary. Cross another stile, continuestraight on through a kissing gate to the main road.Turn right for about 100yds (90m) and cross the roadto the layby.

I ALWAYS feel a little self-conscious going for amassage, but after being asked to experience aAromatherapy massage at Caroline Hughes’ Nature’sEssence Aromatherapy treatment room my feelingshave now totally been transformed. Caroline or ‘Corky’ – as I’m sure she will be knownto you after just one appointment – is a font ofknowledge in holistic treatments using essential oils.Caroline has just opened her treatment room inMontpellier Terrace and the beautiful art decosurroundings, in conjunction with soothing music, provide the perfect environment to relax. Themassage treatment eases muscle pains through therelease of toxins, relieves stiffness in joints andalleviates poor circulation by increasing oxygen flowin the blood.Upon meeting Caroline we sat and discussed mylifestyle, medical history and any current anxieties inmy life. We talked about how aromatherapy worksthrough massage and its healing properties. Wechose a base oil of grape seed and added essentialoils of rose, frankincense and neroli to helprelaxation, alleviate tension and promote well-being– and one that wouldn’t leave me feeling too ‘oily’ formy afternoon appointment! This was the most comprehensive massage I thinkI have ever had, and was certainly 80 minutes ofsheer indulgence. After ensuring I was comfortableCaroline massaged my body from head to toe a littleat a time, ensuring the rest of my body was keptwarm and keeping my modesty intact. Each fingerand toe was flexed and massaged and even the palmof my hand. Caroline’s calming and caring attitudemade my visit a really pleasant experience and I don’tthink I’ll be waiting for any muscle problems before Ivisit her again!

September is a lovely month, the weather is usuallyrather good, the evenings havenʼt drawn in too muchand the children are back at school!Use biological controlNow is a good time to use abiological control (nematodes)against vine weevil grubs (youknow the little beasts that asgrubs lie in wait in pots ofcyclamen, primulas, begoniasand other species and eat the roots away till the poor plantkeels over). The adult weevils make unsightly notches onthe leaves of plants like rhododendrons, which will not killthem but look horrid. The biological control is good to useon the pot plants but is not so effective in the gardendepending on the soil type. You can buy them from thegarden centre or online. From what I remember you haveto send off for the little ʻcrittersʼ as they donʼt have a shelflife, and they get posted to you. Follow the instructions onthe packet and mix up the microscopic nematode withwater and drench the pots. Donʼt let the compost dry out.Plant ColchicumsNow is also a good time toplant Colchicums (autumnflowering crocuses). Theylike sheltered but sunnypositions under trees (if tooexposed they get beatendown by wind and rain). They look like crocus buthave six anthers instead of three which crocus have. Youbuy them as dry corms, and arrange in small groups ofseven or more where they will be readily seen in theautumn and will make a lovely late display. Warning – allparts of the colchicum plant are poisonous so wash handsafter handling!Divide perennialsIf the weather allows you can get on with lifting anddividing any perennials that have got too congested, andstopped flowering as well as they had been – this can bedone in spring but by then things can get very busy so it isone less job to do. Lift the large clumps and with a pair ofgarden forks back to back, prise them apart into smallerpieces. Discard the woody, congested centre of clumps, replanting pieces which look healthy and have a good rootsystem and new shoots into compost enriched soil withsome bone meal added. These will give a good show thefollowing summer. www.andorran.co.uk

Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

The recent stock market crashes made mewonder about where the best place was to investmy money. Not that I plan to answer that questionfor you here – you must do your own research andseek your own advice and not rely onthese musings.

About the sametime, someone toldme that horsenumber 17 inthe big race atYork was a surefire winner –only had to turnup to win, sort of thing. Not that I am encouraginggambling in this article; if youwish to do that, you should do soresponsibly.

But it did make me wonder about all the optionsopen to you if you have a few bob spare or if, morecrucially, you are trying to work out where to putyour life’s savings so that they are making you goodmoney for later life.

The value of investments can go up or down andeven the best fund managers struggle to get themto go in the right direction in times of market freefall. So if that’s too risky, how about a nice, safeinvestment in a bank or building society. Well withbank base rate on the floor, interest rates paid todepositors are miserly.

Mmmm ... property then perhaps? That’s alwaysbeen regarded as a safe haven, but as mostpeople who have tried to market their housesrecently will tell you, trying to sell it just at themoment requires an incredible amount of luck infinding a buyer. And I really don’t want to go backto that tip for York (which is still running by the way).

Good luck with your thoughts. I think I’ll just goback to being ‘Confused of Cheltenham’.

Where toinvest?

LAST month I discussed carcrime and its impact onGloucester City residents atthe moment. I emphasisedsome of the things you can doto reduce the likelyhood ofhaving your car broken intoand having valuables such asSatNav’s and Laptops stolen.

Well I am pleased to beable to report this month thatsome of the actions we, thepolice, are taking have beenpaying off. We have madeseveral notable arrests since Ilast wrote and have chargedthese individuals with anumber of thefts.

In many cases those arrested have been forensically linkedto these crimes and already we have seen a drop in thenumber of offences. However, this is not the end of this crimeissue and it will still be your actions which will make the biggestdifference in preventing these crimes... think prevention ratherthan cure.

A different problem often brought to the attention of theteam is anti social behaviour around the City, and during thesummer months we often see an increase. Officers are oftencalled to groups of young people hanging around residentialareas, who are bored and this can often escalate to acts of antisocial behaviour. At the one end of the scale this can be rowdybehaviour which is intimidating to local residents, but at theother end of the scale it can be acts of vandalism, which is acriminal offence.

I am not saying that all young people are involved in this, infact it is relatively few – especially when you think of how manyyoung people we have in the City. However, we do see anincrease in anti social behaviour at this time of year and clearlythe local policing team want to reduce this. One of thecomplaints raised by those we speak to in these circumstances,is a lack of activities.

Therefore I am pleased to say that a new community Youthclub began in August called the Youth Peace Project, and isbased at the Trust Centre in Conduit Street in Gloucester. Theclub will be for two age groups. There will be a juniors night onWednesdays between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, which is aimed atyoung people aged between 8 and 12 years. On Thursdaysbetween 7pm and 9pm there will be a senior night, for ages 13to 18 years. So at a time when a lot of activities have come toan end due to funding constraints this is really good news.

Finally, I am always looking for ways of making it easier foryou to get your views across to the local policing team andletting us know what you think the real priorities are. Thereforeover the next few weeks the team will be holding policeinformation points at various locations and events acrossthe City. Look out for them at the Youth Showcase eventin Llanthony priory in September. This will be a greatopportunity to speak to the local officers and tell us whatconcerns you most.
