The Vietnam War, a new documentary by directors Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The 10-part, 18-hour series features testimony from nearly 80 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides. “The Vietnam War was a decade of agony that took the lives of more than 58,000 Americans,” Burns said. “Not since the Civil War have we as a country been so torn apart. There wasn’t an American alive then who wasn’t affected in some way — from those who fought and sacrificed in the war, to families of service members and POWs, to those who protested the war in open conflict with their government and fellow citizens. More than 40 years after it ended, we can’t forget Vietnam, and we are still arguing about why it went wrong, who was to blame and whether it was all worth it.” Added Novick, “Ken and I have tried to shed new light on the war by looking at it from the bottom up, the top down and from all sides. In addition to dozens of Americans who shared their stories, we interviewed many Vietnamese on both the winning and losing sides and were surprised to learn that the war remains as painful and unresolved for them as it is for us. Within this almost incomprehensibly destructive event, we discovered profound, universal human truths, as well as uncanny resonances with recent events.” Ten years in the making, the series brings the war and the chaotic epoch it encompassed viscerally to life. It includes rarely seen, digitally remastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and revelatory audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations.
Local funding for The Vietnam War is provided by Kraw Law Group, Comcast, Tauck, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and Stanford Health Care.
The Vietnam War premieres Sunday, September 17, at 8pm on KQED 9.
The first five episodes air nightly from Sunday, September 17, through Thursday, September 21, at 8pm. The final five episodes air nightly from Sunday, September 24, through Thursday, September 28, at 8pm.
THE VIETNAM WARA landmark documentary event from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick.
In the run-up to and during the television broadcast of The Vietnam War, KQED will be publishing a series of online stories examining the impact of the war on the Bay Area. Topics will include Vietnamese immigration, antiwar protests and the war’s influence on the local arts scene.

The fifth season of KQED’s Film School Shorts television series offers a sneak peek at the future of filmmaking, as well as an antidote to Hollywood’s diversity dilemma. Nearly half of the films in the new season are directed by women, and more than 30 percent are directed by people of color. From exploring the immigrant experience to LGBTQ coming of age, this year’s selections offer a snapshot of the unique pastiche that is today’s American culture. Look for an outstanding performance from Brian George (Seinfeld, The Big Bang Theory) as an Indian American woman’s overprotective father in the hilarious season premiere film Fanny Pack, followed by the true story of comedian Hasan Minhaj’s (The Daily Show) ill-fated prom night in Prom. And don’t miss Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Good Wife) as a forbidden lover in Sweet, Sweet Country. In addition to its lineup of talented actors, this film's directors have earned accolades at festivals that include Sundance and Tribeca, and some have already made the leap from shorts to feature films. AWOL (episode three) has been adapted into a full-length movie purchased by Netflix, and Festus (episode seven) director Shawn Snyder is wrapping up a feature starring Matthew Broderick. The not-to-be-missed season finale (airing November 17) showcases filmmakers from Bay Area schools, including San Francisco State University and Ex’pression College.

Q
What attracted you to KQED? I first met Holly Kernan, vice president of news, when I was a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford [2015–16]. She and I clicked; I admired her energy, news philosophy, and vision for KQED and public media. Later, I visited the KQED newsroom, and I was immediately attracted to the “yes, and” culture. I heard people chatting away about ideas, challenging each other and having what I call “butterfly moments.” These are moments when creative people are talking and the “flutter” of an idea comes into the conversation. These are the moments that can turn a sliver of an idea into a full-fledged story, and it takes creative, engaging and enthusiastic colleagues to help it along. I thrive most in this type of environment, and I witnessed that at KQED.
Tell me a bit about your path here.I began my career as a television news producer before transitioning to reporting and anchoring in markets throughout the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. Before coming to public radio, I was a regular contributor to Al Jazeera America where I reported for AJAM news and the magazine show America Tonight. When AJAM folded, I knew that public media was the only medium that would allow me to produce compelling, contextual narrative-style journalism. KQED, specifically, offers the opportunity to share important stories that make people feel something — perhaps smarter.
This summer, Tonya Mosley crossed the country with her family to join KQED as the newest member on our Silicon Valley news desk. Most recently Tonya worked for WBUR in Boston as the senior education reporter. Some of her accomplishments include a 2016 Emmy Award for her televised piece Beyond Ferguson, a 2015 Journalist of the Year award from the Washington State Association of Justice, and a 2014 National RTDNA Unity award for her public radio series Black in Seattle.
News
Do you have a specific beat at KQED?My official title is senior Silicon Valley correspondent. The valley is vast, which makes my mission broad and yet very specific. As I ingratiate myself into the community, I will be learning which issues, topics and stories are important to the Silicon Valley community.
Is there a particular issue that you are passionate about covering? I’m most interested in life and culture, with an emphasis on social justice. Imagine a story as a big Victorian house. Most often, we , as reporters, tell the story from the front porch. It’s interesting, but pretty transparent — most people can see where the story is going as you share it. Going inside the house to the living room or kitchen, offers a deeper perspective. What I’m most passionate about is sharing the story from the bedrooms upstairs — the places most people don’t see. This sometimes means not reporting the big story the way everyone else is reporting on it, but digging a little deeper or taking — a different angle, which offers up a story that is perhaps, more memorable. Do you have any guilty pleasures?I’m an information junkie, which is the PC term for “nosy.” I love to consume, consume, consume — radio, TV, print, social media conversations, magazines (there’s always a pile of them stacked up on my bed stand) . . . along with at least two or three books that I’m reading simultaneously. An important note about this: I am not picky. Along with my heavy reads, I love gossip rags, “chicklit,” trash TV and pop music. And I’m not ashamed of this!

Beginning this month, KQED’s Check, Please! Bay Area offers six new episodes featuring a range of menu options — haggis from a Scottish pub in the Alhambra building in Redwood City; contemporary Indian cuisine with cocktails to match in San Francisco; wood-fired delicacies in Sonoma County; and traditional Jewish deli offerings, done Berkeley style, in the East Bay. Every episode of the James Beard– and Emmy Award–winning series gathers three local diners cast as restaurant critics around the table with host Leslie Sbrocco. They share their favorite spots and, after visiting them, dish on all the eateries. Will they like or loathe each other's spots? Tune in and find out.
New episodes of Check, Please! Bay Area begin airing Thursday, September 14, at 7:30pm on KQED 9.

Check, Please! Bay Area: The Food Lovers’ Companion
When Leslie Sbrocco is let loose with $100 in a wine emporium, she’s like the proverbial kid in a candy store. In a new episode of KQED’s original Web series Taste This, Leslie’s shopping trip results in recommendations that are easy on the wallet and quaffable for any occasion. From Chardonnays to rosés to Cabernets, she selects well-priced bottles to sip throughout the fall. In other new segments, Leslie shares inside information on the making of rye whiskey; tastes smooth and delectable chocolate from bean to bar; and lets us in on the Bay Area’s latest tipple — cider. It’s shaking up the apple world! If all of this doesn’t get your mouth watering, there’s also plenty of local beer to taste — and Leslie explains how it is made.

speak. My mother was an English major, so I grew up in a household where she corrected our speech and grammar, so that part is kind of innate in me, but I try not to say it out loud too much.
Do you have a favorite type of story to edit? It’s fun to work with reporters who are excited about what they learned. Part of my philosophy as an editor is that it is my job, as much as possible, to say yes to big, significant ideas because those are the stories reporters are really going to want to work on.
What drew you to science reporting?I love being alive in a human body on this planet, and science is a way of uncovering continual wonders about that. I remember one day, I was in Utah and I spent the day in a lab with a scientist, I thought, “There’s nowhere else in the world I’d rather be right now than talking to this person who made this discovery.” It was just fascinating getting to be places where you otherwise wouldn’t get to be, learning about things that you otherwise wouldn’t get to learn.
Do you ever find yourself using your editing skills outside work? All the time, but I try not to say anything. People get irritated if the editor is constantly editing them as they

KQED Science Editor Brings Excitement, Wonder and Hope to the Job
Is there a topic that you are particularly excited about covering? I’m interested in exploring how climate change can be a story that gives people hope. I am not a fan of apocalyptic movies and books about how everything is coming to a big end. I think that human beings have incredible ingenuity and resilience and that if we can learn to change our relationship with Earth, then we can figure out how to move through this. The stories I’m really looking forward to telling would help people understand how much their own decisions matter. Climate change is a collective problem, and the only solution is a collective solution, which means answering the question “What can I do [as just one person] that makes a difference?” The answer is, “It’s only what you do that makes a difference.” Stories can give people some sense of hope that we can work together on this and make some kind of impact on our own collective future.

Kat Snow began her 25-year public broadcasting career at KMUN in Astoria, Oregon, after which she freelanced for a number of publications and news outlets, including Newsweek, the National Catholic Reporter, National Native News and Minnesota Public Radio, while contributing to KBOO in Portland. She then worked as a reporter and news director at KUER in Salt Lake City. It was during her transition from reporter to news director that Kat realized her passion for editing, which ultimately led to her joining KQED as a news editor in 2002. Today, as senior science editor, Kat works with KQED reporters to bring shape to our award-winning radio and online science journalism. She spoke to KQED Science intern Kendall Rasmussen about her career path and current job.
