A message from our Deacon     

“If your brother sins [against you], go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.  If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, 

so that ‘every fact may be established on the tes mony of two or three witnesses.’  If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church…” 

MT 18:15  

  My sisters and brothers  I have to admit that when  I first read this Gospel passage,  I was a  li le perplexed about what I was going to say.  If I were a juridicist or a canonist, perhaps I would say that this passage lays the founda on for the legal procedures for excommunica on.   But I am not a legalist or a canonist, I am a Crosier.  And with my Crosier lens I hear something deeper beyond legali es and procedures.    What I hear is rela onship.  How do we maintain a rela onship with those we are in conflict with? Part of the experience of  living  in a religious community are the “rubs” we  feel  from others and the “rubs” we cause others – both those we are aware of and those we are unaware of.  We all know what it is like to be hurt by someone we live with.  And we have all experienced the difficulty of forgiving someone.  In many ways, it is harder to forgive those whom we are closest to, those whom we have invested so much of ourselves with.  I am reminded of St. Augus ne, whose Rule we Crosiers  follow.   His Rule reminds us that we are always  in rela onship with God and with one another.  So what can we  learn from this passage about how to mend a damaged rela onship? Jesus says the first step  is  to  speak directly, but privately,  to  the person who has done us harm.  If we  truly want  to  se le a difference with someone, we need to do it face to face. If this fails, then the second step is to bring one or two more persons to help, those who are wise and gracious rather than hot‐tempered and judgmental. And if this fails, then we must s ll not give up, but seek the help of the Chris an community, those who will pray for us and help us find a solu on for reconcilia on based on Chris an love and wisdom, rather than on force or threat of legal ac on.  Our Lord promises us that “if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.” This is God’s exhorta on for us today. Instead of burning bridges, con nue to pray and ask others to pray with you.   More things are wrought by prayer than this world can imagine.  Saint Augus ne is one great example of a person who made amends for his sins through the grace obtained by the unceasing prayers of his mother,  St. Monica. So my sisters and brothers,  let us con nue to pray for those who are not reconciled with us or with the Church.    Pray that God will grant us all the grace to seek love and charity above legalism and severity.

St.  Gregory  School  wants  to  wish  St.  Gregory Parish  a  wonderful  70th  Anniversary.    As  a ministry  to  the Church, we are honored  to be a part of this great parish family.  We can't wait to be a part of the next 70 years!   Please  pray  as  our  students  begin  their  ITBS standardized  tes ng.    We  know  they  will  be ready  to  shine!    These  tests  are  important  to iden fy  student  needs  and  of  course,  the  high schools use these tests for admission purposes.   Our first Sunday school mass will be September 10 at 10:00.  We look forward to celebra ng the Liturgy with our Parish family!  Our  next  play  (which  will  be  in  December)           is "Gregory!"   A play wri en by a parent here at the  school.    We  cannot  wait  to  present  this historical, inspira onal and spiritual play. 

St. Vincent de Paul This summer we visited many families and have given a lot  of  food  deple ng  our  pantry  of  some  of  the necessary items needed to fill out food boxes.  

We  are  having  our  Food  drive  in  November,  but  we need a li le help now!  

If you can help out with dry rise, beans, tomato sauce, jelly  and  hygiene  products,  a  dona on  box  will  be placed in our church the next few weekends, for you to drop off these much needed items or whatever gi  you choose to give.            Thank you for your generosity!

In the spring of 1947, with nothing more than boundaries and borrowed worship space, Saint Gregory's became the eleventh parish established in the Phoenix area. With stables and live-stock nearby, they celebrated, prayed and planned for the day when a more suitable place of worship would become reality. On March 31st, Palm Sunday, 1947, 200 eager families and their Pastor, Father Bernard L. Gordon, met in a makeshift chapel at the Arizona State Fairgrounds to worship and officially establish the parish we cherish today.

Father Gordon devoted himself to this mission, along with committee members Eugene Burrus, Victor Steinegger, Bill Murphy, Frank Murphy, Howard Lamptom, Lloyd Pike and Ed Cosgrove. In fact, it was Lloyd Pike, an architect by trade who designed and coordinated the construction of much of the original church, school and convent.

In the meantime, the people of Saint Gregory's would have to find a home other than the fairgrounds to conduct Mass and the business of their new beloved parish. It was decided that a simple Army surplus barracks building would have to suffice. Located in a field at 18th Avenue and Osborn, a group of ambitious volunteers went to work day and night for several weeks. With their own hands, they poured their energy into renovating and remodeling the modest barracks, celebrating their first Mass in St. Gregory Catholic Church on November 23, 1947.

Taize prayer is a quiet simple way of prayer designed for people of all Chris an tradi ons.  

These medita ve candlelit services include simple chants sung repeatedly; humble musical accompaniment; rich silence; and 

prayers of praise and intercession.  There is a sense of privacy and yet a great sense of community in 

this prayer.  Taize is a simple form of worship that provides a space in our busy lives where we can focus on the love of God revealed in 

Christ's cross and in the gathered community.

 “Si tu hermano peca, repréndelo a solas entre los dos. Si te hace caso, has salvado a tu hermano.  

Si no te hace caso, llama a otro o a otros dos, para que todo el asunto quede confirmado por boca de dos o tres tes gos. Si no les hace caso, díselo a la comunidad, y si no hace caso ni siquiera a la comunidad..”  

Mt 18:15     Mis hermanas y hermanos tengo que reconocer que cuando leí por primera vez este pasaje del Evangelio,  estaba un poco indeciso acerca de lo que iba a decir. Si yo fuera legalista o canónico, tal vez diría que éste pasaje establece  las bases para  los procedimientos  legales para  la excomunión. Pero no soy ni  legalista ni canónico, soy un cruzado. Y con mi visión de Cruzado logro descubrir algo más profundo, mucho más allá de procedimientos y aspectos legales.   Lo que escucho aquí, es acerca de  las  relaciones  interpersonales.  ¿Cómo mantenemos una  relación  con aquellos con los que estamos en conflicto? Parte de la experiencia de vivir en una comunidad religiosa son los "roces" que sen mos de  los otros y  los "roces" que nosotros provocamos en  los demás – tanto de  los que nos damos cuenta como de los que ignoramos. Todos sabemos lo que es ser las mado por alguien con quien  vivimos  y hemos experimentado  la dificultad de perdonar  a  alguien.  En muchos  sen dos, es más di cil perdonar a quienes nos son más cercanos, que, a aquellos en quienes no hemos inver do gran parte de nosotros mismos. Me  recuerda a una  regla de San Agus n,  la cual  los Cruzados seguimos con mucha reverencia: que nuestra relación con Dios se vive a través de unos con otros.   Así que ¿qué podemos aprender de este pasaje acerca de cómo reparar una relación dañada? Jesús dice que  el  primer  paso  es  hablar  directamente,  pero  en  privado,  a  la  persona  que  nos  ha  hecho  daño.                Si realmente queremos resolver una diferencia con alguien, necesitamos hacerlo cara a cara. Si esto falla, entonces el segundo paso es llevar una o dos personas más para ayudar, que sean personas sabias, en lugar temperamentales  y  de  las  que  juzgan.  Y  si  aun  esto  no  funciona,  entonces  sin  ceder  todavía  debemos  buscar  la  ayuda  de  la  comunidad  cris ana,  quienes  oran  por  nosotros  y  nos  ayudan  a  encontrar  una solución de reconciliación basado en el amor cris ano y  la sabiduría, en  lugar de  fuerza o  la amenaza de acciones legales.   Nuestro Señor nos promete que "Si dos de ustedes están de acuerdo sobre cualquier cosa aquí en la  erra y oran por ello, les será concedido por mi Padre celes al." Esta es la exhortación de Dios para nosotros hoy. En lugar de quemar puentes, con nuar orando y pedir a otros orar con usted.   Hay más cosas  labradas por  la oración que este mundo de  lo que podríamos  imaginar. San Agus n es un gran ejemplo de una persona que  logro enmendar  sus pecados por  la gracia obtenida en  las  incesantes oraciones de Santa Mónica, su madre. Así que mis hermanas y hermanos, con nuemos orando por aquellos que no están reconciliados con nosotros o con la iglesia.   Oremos para que Dios nos conceda la gracia de buscar el amor y la caridad por encima de la severidad y los legalismos.
