September 11, 2001:The attack on the
World Trade Center
The morning of September 11, 2001 started off just like any other day. Civilians and government officials were driving to work, children were in school learning, and people on
the sidewalks stopped to get a glimpse of the famous World Trade Center.
World Trade Center
It looked like this….
But then, without warning, the Twin Towers were attacked!
Two planes had been hijacked: Flight 11 and Flight 175.
Terror
George W. Bush was the president at this time. He had visited an elementary school in Florida to tell children how important education is. While he was listening to the kids read to him, someone came and whispered into his ear to tell him that the Twin Towers were attacked.
The President Gets The News
Over 2,000 people died that day….
Body Count
….and dozens more were injured.
Injured
Later, after the attacks, President Bush made a televised speech. He promised the Americans that they would “hunt down those responsible for these cowardly acts”.
“Cowardly Acts”
The person behind the attack was Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Quaeda. For the next ten years, he was on the
FBI’s Most Wanted list until he was killed on May 2, 2011.
Osama bin Laden
That night, dozens of spotlights were switched on to remember the people who were killed in the attacks.
Lights In The Sky
For weeks, funerals and memorials were held around the country.
Too Many Funerals
The attacks were especially hard on the children because some of their parents were in the towers when they fell.
Children Without Parents
It even had an impact on pop culture, too! After 9/11, some movies were edited to show respect.
In the 2002 movie Spider-Man, a scene showing a stolen helicopter getting caught in a web built in between the
Twin Towers by Spider-Man was deleted, but the scene at the end of the movie that shows Spider-Man hanging on to
a flagpole was added in response to the attacks.
Here is the original movie poster and two other scenes from the movie, Spider-Man. If you look closely on the poster,
you can see the Twin Towers reflecting off of Spider-Man’s eyes.
