Building with an artistic touchTemple City students win big at 2021 “Water is Life” Student Art Contest

The Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District proudly announced the winners of the 2021 “Water is Life” art contest. The judges were overwhelmed by the creativity and talent shown by all the student submissions and appreciative of the encouragement put forth by the teachers. Congratulations to all the students who inspire us to make conservation a way of life. K-2nd Grade, 2nd Place, Tiffany Wang, Grade 2, Longden Elementary School.

The Facebook message from the City of Temple City was clear. “Let’s go, TC! 81.3 percent of Tem-ple Citians, age 12 and up, are vaccinated for COVID-19. Make an ap-pointment for your free vaccine at vaccinatelacounty.com.”

The Temple City Chamber of Commerce was equally clear in Pres-ident Choi’s report to the City Council on Aug. 3.

“The word of the day is delta, as in delta variant which is coursing through our communities and dis-rupting the grand reopen-ing of our business com-munity.

The Chamber urges everyone to please, please get vaccinated.

Too many stories of sick people dying in hos-pitals begging for the vac-cine only to be told it is too late. Don’t be too late.”

To support community efforts to stop the spread of the deadly delta variant, the Chamber announced its September Vaccine

The City encourages residents to make an ap-

pointment for your free vaccine at vaccinatelacounty.com.

“To everyone mourn-ing a loved one lost to COVID-19, please know we keep you in our thoughts and prayers. And to the family mourn-ing the loss of their child, I send my deepest sympa-thies during this unimag-inable time,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, director of Public Health. “Everyone who is not yet vaccinated needs to know

Advice to help parents support teen with UC application

If you are a parent, then you should strongly consider having a revoca-ble living trust drafted, in additional to other essen-tial estate planning docu-ments.

In the past, I have writ-ten about the benefits of having a trust, with the largest benefit being to avoid probate court, due to the time and cost in-volved. However, on a

Estate planning for parents ensures children’s future needs will be metmore personal level for parents, a trust is even more important to ensure your children are properly cared for if you are no lon-ger here. Here are some examples of questions that are typically explored at a first estate planning meet-ing:

• Who would you want to raise your children?

• Who would you want to manage your assets for

your children’s benefit?• Would you want your

children to inherit all as-sets at age 18?

• Would you want to encourage college and postgraduate education for your children?

For people with adult children, there are still other important consid-erations that should be explored. For instance, would you want to set age

limitations for full inher-itance? Is there a need to protect assets through a discretionary trust or special needs trust? What

happens to your child’s inheritance if your child predeceases you?

A properly drafted trust allows you to make

these critical parenting choices.

The pandemic has made many of us contem-plate our own mortality seriously for the first time. Although estate planning is not always enjoyable to contemplate, having peace of mind for your children’s continued success is defi-nitely worth the effort in my experience in working with parents.

Parents, you know how badly your kid wants to attend a UC campus next fall, and you want to do everything you can to help them.

However, your well-meaning support can backfire. In this article, I’ll share some Do’s and Don’t’s as your teen completes their UC Application.

Some Don’ts: 1) Don’t set expectations. Your campus

expectations can end in a lot of pain for your teen.

2) Don’t get involved in the essays. You’ll never realize the damage you do

to a teen’s story by participating in the essay process, but I see students’ parents do this all the time.

3) Don’t push a major. The major is a real-ly important part of the UC Application, but parents’ efforts here often backfire.

Some Do’s: 1) Do discuss the UC campuses. This sup-

ports the college planning process. 2) Do help students write a master list of

activities and accomplishments with dates. Teens have terrible memories and also tend to overlook activities that don’t feel “big.”

3) Do learn the UC PIQ essay prompts and talk about them. This is

not essay brainstorming. You’re just making sure they understand the prompts and can start reflecting.

4) Do support them with time management and ac-countability. Ideally, with positivity and patience.

5) Do help them find qualified, appropriate support. Most students could benefit from the guidance of a col-lege counselor outside of their high school at this very important phase of their lives.

Make sure this professional is qualified, ethical, and affiliated with organizations like HECA, IECA, and NACAC.

Sooner is better, since a counselor is able to give bet-ter support the earlier you find them.

College Torch offers both one-on-one expert guid-ance and a comprehensive DIY online course to help students complete the UC Application and UC essays. Find us at collegetorch.com to learn more.

Parklane Dental unveils new Hello Kitty themed rooms

Chamber mem-ber Parklane Den-tal, the only dental office in America featuring Hello Kit-ty, Gudetama, and their friends, re-cently unveiled two new rooms starring Badtz-Maru and Little Twin Stars.

When Dr. Eric To’s daughter was younger she was frequently in and out of the hospital due to a difficult illness.

During that time his daughter always held on to a Hello Kitty doll that helped soothe

and calm her nerves. Dr. To was inspired by

Badtz-Maru welcomes the whole family into his new dental home at #SanrioXParklane. Hang out with this cool penguin while he helps the Parklane dental team give you and your entire family the best care available, even if this Sanrio pal does have a bit of an attitude.

Congresswoman Judy Chu listens to Dr. To explain the state-of-the-art equipment in the original Hello Kitty room.

Stay in the clouds as you learn how to stay clean and healthy with Little Twin Stars. Take a ride with their friend Pony and wave to these shiny stars who are all ready to sprinkle magic to keep your teeth safe and cavity-free.

Hello Kitty theme makes dental visitmore relaxing for patients of all ages

these events and wanted to bring this same feel-ing of calmness to all his patients at his dentistry practice.

So he reached out to Sanrio and created a partnership that resulted in the “Sanrio Friends X Parklane Dental” office in Temple City.

Of course Parklane Dental is open to patients of all ages and the dental group specialties includes pediatric, orthodontic (braces), cosmetics, oral surgery, and implant.

The State Assembly unanimously joined the State Senate in passing the Cancer Patients Bill of Rights, authored by Sen.
