Saturday Briefing Page September 17, 2011 A MESSAGE FROM RICHARD R. KELLEY TO OUR OUTRIGGER ‘OHANA Housekeepers – Our Extraordinary Superheroes By Dr. Richard Kelley Over the next two weeks, we will take some time away from our regular duties to honor our Housekeepers. We will give well-earned recognition to those who work tirelessly every day of the year to keep our rooms and public areas looking as great as they do, and we will thank them for everything they do. Even though they work quietly, far from the limelight, the job our Housekeepers do is nothing short of magnificent. ey perform their duties flawlessly 24/7/365 – all day, every day of the week, throughout the year, even on Christmas Day. Regular readers of Saturday Briefing know that during International Housekeepers Week, I often seek a metaphor for the vital role that Housekeepers play in the success of our hotels. is year, I believe the term “Extraordinary Superheroes” captures the spirit of our Housekeepers because it brings to mind the legendary, fictional superheroes, Wonder Woman 1 and Superman 2 . Our Housekeepers are far from fictional. Every day, they perform tasks that would challenge both Wonder Woman and Superman if those icons of yesteryear suddenly came to life and leaped off the pages of the comic books many of us read in our youth, long before the days of computers and the Internet. Wonder Woman deflected bullets with her magical, metallic bracelets. Superman could leap over tall buildings. e two represented trust, honesty, dedication and strength. ey were swift, hardworking and sincere. ey cared for their communities and everyone in them. ey were serious about their mission, yet both – and particularly Superman, also known as news reporter Clark Kent – could also pause and laugh at themselves in typically human fashion. Doesn’t it all describe our Housekeepers? We are so fortunate to have a group of such extraordinary individuals working in the Housekeeping departments of every Outrigger, OHANA, and affiliated property across the Pacific and, with Outrigger Lodging Services, across the continental United States from Florida to California. Seven days a week, these Superheroes accomplish exceptional, noteworthy, and remarkable feats in a wide range of activities. ree hundred and sixty-five days a year, they demonstrate: • A strong work ethic • Top skills • A deep sense of responsibility • A willingness to help others • Honesty and integrity • A wonderful sense of humor Each morning, as they go forth to tackle a corridor full of guest rooms or the equivalent in public areas, they bring with them this incredible set of skills and dedication. By the end of the day, everything has to be perfect and ready for guests arriving from distant corners of the world. ere are thousands of details that need attention. Only people with a strong work ethic and well-honed abilities can do this demanding job with consistently high performance day after day, month after month, and year after year. Our Housekeepers also have a tremendous sense of personal responsibility for their jobs, their company and their Continued on page 6 credit: DC Comics credit: DC Comics Wonder Woman Superman

Saturday BriefingPage

This is the fifteenth of the series of articles focusing on the 21 Asia-Pacific economies that will be represented at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Honolulu during November 2011.

BackgroundPeru is a country that has a diversity and wealth not common in the world. The

main attractions are their archaeological patrimony of pre-Columbian cultures

and the center of Inca’s Empire, their gastronomy [the art or science of good eating],

their colonial architecture (has imposing colonial constructions) and their natural

resources (a paradise for the ecological tourism).

Customs, Culture & Etiquette• The word gringo, is used commonly, but is not generally intended as offensive. The

original meaning encompassed all white people who do not speak Spanish. Many

people use the word gringo exclusively for Americans or American look-alikes. It’s

not uncommon for blonde people to be called gringo. Peruvians do not hesitate to

greet you with “Hola, gringo!”

• People are very friendly, peaceful and helpful. When in trouble, you mostly can rely

on getting help

• From the coast to the jungle and through the highlands, Peruvian people live the

same way as their ancestors did a thousand years ago; maintaining their dances,

handcrafts, textiles, customs and keeping their spirit alive

• At Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, a whole village floats on the

water. Hundreds of years ago the Uros people created these floating islands

- made of Totora reed - by stacking one reed on top of another until a stable

platform was built. They lived on these islands as they sailed around the lake to

fish or hunt for their food. You can still see the Uros today, living as if they had

floated through time

• “Qoyllur Rit’i “- the feast of the Shining Snow - is one of Peru’s most incredible

expressions of faith and tradition. Starting on Trinity Sunday, more than 70,000

people come together at the Sinakara Valley in the province of Quispicanchis,

Cuzco, to embark on a pilgrimage of hope to the top of a snow covered mountain,

15,090 feet above sea level. After a 5 mile walk, thousands of dancers, hundreds of

bands and countless believers finish their journey toward the “Apus” -the mountain

gods- asking for money, love, luck, or whatever else they feel they are lacking

• Medicine here is based on the use of plants and herbs that have been used for

hundreds of years

• “Peruvian time” - If you’re invited to a party or out for dinner or drinks, you aren’t

really expected until at least 30 minutes after the arranged time – and an hour late

isn’t out of the norm

• If you’re invited to someone’s home for dinner or a party, apart from showing

up fashionably late, it’s considered proper to bring a small gift for the host and

hostess

• It’s considered polite to always greet people properly, even shopkeepers and taxi

drivers, no matter how long you’ve been acquainted. A simple ‘buenos dias’ is

sufficient, and don’t forget an ‘hasta luego’ when you leave.

• When being introduced, a handshake is appropriate in most situations, although

women may greet each other with a kiss on the cheek – always lean to your left for

the kiss to avoid a very awkward situation
