Coordination services for Hambantota district federation of civil societies to conduct their monthly meeting 18 organization members attended. CHA is the District Chairman. Planned activities include - livelihood, environment, national co-existences, child protection & child rights, women development & empowerment, youth development…..etc..

District activities-JaffnaDistrict Co-ordination committee meeting The District Co-ordination committee meeting was presided by the Govt. Agent and the Chief Minister C.V.Vigneswaran. MP Mavai Senathirajah, MP Angajan Ramanathan & other members from Northern Provincial Council, Jaffna, officers from Govt. Departments, NGO’s were attended the meeting. 200 participants were present 656 Proposals from every Government Departments estimated to cost 68.45 million projects was discussed. The total of the proposal were. Ms. Kilta Sriranganathan attended the meeting.

District Women Development Federation committee meeting - At CHA, Jaffna OfficeThe District Women Development Federation Committee Meeting conducted their 5th meeting at CHA, Jaffna office.The President Ms.Ramalingam Ragini and the Secretary, Ms Sasileka with the members of the committee, were present at the meeting. The DWDF meeting will be conducted in every 3rd Friday of the month at CHA, Office..

The Minister of National Intergration & Reconcialiation, MP Mr. Mano Ganeshan met NGO representatives. At the end of the meeting Hon. Minister Mano Ganeshan, urged all the participants to canvas among youths and dansales to join in the Police service for the betterment of community. Ms.Kilta Sriranganathan attended the meeting

Meeting with the Minister of National Intergration & Reconciliation

Need and requirements to safeguard documentary heritage of Kayts- Estimates have been collected. The cultural officer provided a proposal to safeguard documentary heritage.

Mr.Shanmuhanaathan, Supervisor, IHR contacted with the Divisional Secretary, Kopay, Nallur and requested the beneficiaries through RDO & WDO.

Mr.Shanmuhanaathan, Supervisor, IHR & Ms.Kilta, CHA, Jaffna visited the Palmyrah Development Board, Jaffna and met the Products Extension Manager, Mr.K. Gopalakrishnan who briefed on their training programs. The training program duration is 06 months and the fees payable to the trainees are Rs.3000/= each. The material cost will be met by Palmyrah Development Board. At the end of the training some tools and equipments will be given to facilitate the beneficiaries towards development.

The selected candidates will be requested to sign a MOU with PDB to ensure their continuous participation in palmyrah products for certain period. The extension manager assured us to arranged marketing for quality products. He mentioned that, working women in Batticaloa are engaged in producing palmyrah products as a leisure time activity after office hours earning nearly Rs.5000/= for a month.

We contacted with the Divisional Secretary, Jaffna and requested beneficiaries through Rural Development Officer and Women Development Officer for the selection of beneficiaries for the training program. The Industrial Development Officer agreed to give us a list of beneficiaries.

Following the launch of APP in Bangkok in August 2017, the ADPC and the focal points in Sri Lanka had a meeting at DMC. Representatives from DMC, NDRC, Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the Chairman of CHA participated in the meeting. Director of ADPC from Bangkok also was present. The discussion was on finalizing the governance structure of APP Sri Lanka and way forward.

Organizations capacity on Preparedness for Emergency Response

Chairman of CHA met with DG and senior staff at DMC and had discussions on climate change and risk reduction. Concepts for mitigation against climate change were shared and expressed willingness to support in planning and implementation of activities. Response from DMC was positive. Chairman proposed to undertake

activities promoting De silting and ground water recharging to mitigate against climate change and drought in Kayts which has 54 silted ponds as a replicable example to apply nationally in select locations. Greening costal areas is an additional consideration.

The third forum in a series on Gender+ and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - Focusing on SDGs Goal # 5, 10 in Sri Lanka Prospective with Ms. Isha Wedasinghe Miranda, Independent Evaluator, Member of the EvalGender Management Group Secretary Asia Pacific Evaluation Association (APEA) and Consultant at CHA was held at CHA.

Focusing on to examining the processes by which policies for Gender+ (equity and equality) and SGBV’s are made and implemented the University Grants Commission

(UGC) was invited to present the “Preventing Sexual and Gender–based Violence (SGBV) – Strategies for Universities”. Prof. Kumudu Wijewardena, Dept. of Community Medicine/Faculty of Medical Sciences/University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the Co-Chair of the UGC Standing Committee which is the standard setter, policy maker, arbitrator of UGC policy on gender equity / equality in Sri Lankan universities presented the “Gender Equity/Equality in The Sri Lankan University System”. Thanks to Prof. Kumudu Wijewardena, for the

presentation on behalf of UGC and taking part in the discussion.

Active participation by the representatives from CEPA, FPA, High Commission of Canada, High Commission of Australia (DFAT), JICA, Prime Minister’s Office, UNICEF, UNFPA, Women’s Development Centre, IHR, CHA etc… and sharing experiences, valuable comments and suggestions to promote gender equity and equality from primary education is appreciated.

We managed to fit the ‘world’ in to our cozy library situated in a corner of our Centre with many books on variety of topics. Thanks to all those donors who responded promptly to our request to fill the shelves. The Book Club is yet another activity to

join every Tuesday to swap, borrow, read or discuss books of interest with fellow senior members, enjoying a cup of tea and a chat that help link up with other seniors as well. All books and reference materials are available to borrow on a loan system. An area for Music Listening too has been designed inside the Library to refresh the soul.

Yoga, an uplifting blend of spiritual and physical practices with gentle movement, breathing and meditation will be conducted by Ms. Angelica Chandrasekeran, a professional Yoga instructress who volunteered to assist on every Saturdays from 11:15am to

12:15pm.

A healthy Seniors’ Menu was exclusively designed by our partnering company Eat Right (Pvt) Ltd, with whom we have just signed the Agreement. Lunch, dinner, snacks, juices. desserts can be ordered and delivered at the Senior Centre.

Cab hire facility at a discounted rate on a coupon system has been agreed with our partnering company, the Budget Meter Taxi (Pvt) Ltd.

We are hoping to develop innovative approaches to add more activities during the month of October.

CHA was invited by the NGO Secretariat under the ministry of National Co-existence and Official Languages to join the Advisory Committee on Gender Justice and Women Development. An initial discussion held at the

Ministry and CHA participated in the discussions.

The advisory Committee will be formed soon and will create a platform to raise certain issues faced by NGOs at national, district and

divisional level, sharing best practices, streamline standards, develop background documents, knowledge sharing and technical support (Know how) on Gender Justice and Women Development.

It was conducted by Sri Lanka Evaluation Association (SLEVA) in collaboration with Department of Project Management and Monitoring (DPMM) of the Ministry of Development Assignment and

in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It was conducted by: International Resource Expert Juana de Catheu, Senior Conflict & Stabilization Officer, Government of the United Kingdom.

Ms de Catheu also advises the EU, Denmark, UN and development banks on recovery and growth strategies in conflict-affected countries. Mrs. Dhanya Ratnavale from CHA was a participant.
