Wildcat Weekly
Palestine High School enjoyed visits this week from the Kiwanis Club of Palestine and the Palestine Realtors’ Association. The Kiwanis Club and the Palestine Realtors each held their group meeting at the PHS Career & Technical Education Department in the Wildcat Café, and I enjoyed getting to tell them about our programs and district. Janeva Robertson’s Culinary Arts students prepared and served a meal for each of the groups and did a great job showing off skills they are learning.
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant kicked off this week at each K-12 campus.
Through this grant, TACE after-school programs offer students additional learning opportunities during non-school hours. These programs are in their beginning stages and our campuses will be making improvements weekly as students’ needs are being identified.
I would like to say thank you to the Palestine Junior Service League for all that they do for the com-munity of Palestine. This Saturday, September 28, 2013, the Palestine Junior Service League is hosting performances by the au-thor of “Hank the Cow Dog” in the Palestine High School
Auditorium. Everyone is welcome and admission is free with one canned good item. There will be two shows, the first at 1:00 pm and the second at 4:00 pm.

This past Saturday the Cross Country team participated in the Neches Invitational Meet. Our boys and girls did a great job and put a lot of effort to come in second place and fourth place respectively.
The volleyball girls had a tournament in Frankston on Saturday. Girls played great this weekend. 8th grade A team came home with the consolation championship trophy and our 7th grade A team came home with the 3rd place trophy. All girls did an outstanding job playing and representing our school this weekend.
Junior High members of the Wildcat Choir spent this past Saturday at Stephen F. Austin University learning their Region 21 All-Region music. These students worked six hours perfecting songs in English, Latin, and Hebrew so they can perform well at their All-Region competition next month. Their behavior and hard work were commendable, and they represented our school admirably.

During the Open-House parents bid on gift baskets. A
total of $473.00 was raised. This annual effort helps fund

Northside TACE Academy began with our 3-hour before and after-school program on Monday. Wow! Students and teachers alike had a really good time, and we learned a lot. Then our first TACE parent meeting was held Tuesday evening. It was well-attended. Parents and students enjoyed this event as well – especially the learning activities that Mrs. Conner had available.
September 26th is our second annual Community Helpers event. Outside are 10 stations including a postal van, ambulance and ambus, fire truck, helicopter, sheriff, police, trooper vehicles, nurse, pediatrician, radiation therapist, maintenance backhoe and dump-truck, etc., and PISD bus.

Early Childhood Center
Washington Early Childhood students, dressed in their school t-shirts, boarded buses to make their first field trip of the year to Palestine High School to meet their Senior Paw Pals for the very first time. The Paw Pal Program between Palestine High School Seniors and WECC 4 year old students go far beyond education. Throughout the year the Paw Pals will write letters to each other, attend special activities with their Pals and much, much more.
With a touch, a smile and a kind word, Paw Pals will strive to form significant positive relationships with each other, with the hope that these experiences will give the encouragement they need to succeed as students, and as people. While these relationships will provide immediate benefits of support and encouragement to the Little Paw Pals, they also have lasting positive influences on the Senior Paw Pals.
The Paw Pals are looking forward to our next meeting when we get to attend a Pep Rally at the high school and then in December when we are having a Pajama Day at Washington to watch Polar Express.
A big thank you goes out to Wendy Hallmark and Principal Stewart for arranging and welcoming us to their campus.

Food Service
We had a YAC (Youth Advisory Committee) meeting at PJHS on 9/25/13 with the students of Mr. Hawthorne’s yearbook class. Mimi Spreen talked about the
vegetable categories that we are required to serve our students:
Red/Orange – She served oven roasted tomatoes with Italian seasoning, raw & sautéed red bell pepper with Southwest seasonings.
Dark Green – she served raw broccoli
and oven roasted broccoli with black
pepper.
Starchy – she served cold corn salad
with onions & red bell pepper.
Legume – she served 2 kinds of bean,
white cannelloni with Italian
seasonings and black beans with
Southwest seasonings.
Other – she served raw mushrooms
and sautéed mushrooms with dried
thyme.
There were 18 students in the class
and most tried a little bit of everything,
some even went back for seconds,
including Mr. Hawthorne. Mr. Esparza
was there for a little bit, but
unfortunately he didn’t get to taste
anything.
We wanted to let them know why we
serve what we serve them, based on
the USDA requirements. They asked
questions and gave their opinion and
suggestions on food they would like to
see more of in the cafeteria.
