Jill Edwards (Class of 2013)

Hello Boone’s Lick Chapter Members! As many of you know, we decided to not offer a training class this year (2018). (Our chapter has held training classes since 2005 with the exception of 2012.) Our chapter leaders and advisors have decided to take a pause this year in order to spend time re-evaluating our current training class process, reviewing our chapter leadership duties and committee structure, and asking our current chapter members for feedback with the GOAL OF IMPROVING HOW WE TRAIN -- AND RETAIN – THE MEMBERS OF OUR CHAPTER. If you have any thoughts to share, you may email me, or tell another chapter leader. We want to hear your answers to questions such as…. What’s up with past training class participants that members that have left our flock?

Since we began offering them, over 250 people have attended our training classes. In our 2017 hours report, 64 members turned in timesheets – 12 of us received initial certification, 53 of

us were re-certified, and 13 members reached milestones (7 at 250 hours, 5 at 500 hours, and 1 at 1000 hours).

There are around 40 of us that regularly attend our monthly chapter meetings. We are hoping to connect with all training class participants to gather feedback. Please think about

your own training class members and others that you know have gone through the training class but are no longer participating in the chapter. If you know they have moved away, please email me. If they are still around, ask them why they are no longer involved, and share that feedback with me or another chapter leader.

What can we do to encourage more members to turn in timesheets? We know many members are out there completing LOTS of service and advanced training hours, but they choose not to turn in a timesheet each year. In 2017 our members reported 5676 hours – this is equivalent to the labor of 2.8 full-time employees. If everyone turned in a timesheet, I bet we could make that third person whole. And maybe create a fourth! Thank you for pondering the above questions and sharing your thoughts with me or another chapter leader. Also, tell your friends not to despair -- we will offer a training class in 2019. If you know of anyone interested in the training, you may send me an email to let me know, and I will add them to the list of people I will contact in December to let them know about the 2019 training class application process. Thanks!

Sign up to be a Volunteer Habitat Advisor for the CoMO Wild Yards Program!

Habitat Advisors go through training to perform site surveys, consult clients on their desired conservation objectives, and provide a simple land management plan for small landowners in Columbia to achieve their conservation objectives. In addition, certification assessments are performed by HA’s approximately 6

months after the site survey. Habitat Advisors will be trained on CoMo Wild Yards program (CWY) criteria and wildlife management techniques. HA’s agree to conduct 6 to 12 site visits each year that take approximately 2 hours each, participate in a quarterly training, social meetings, and continuing education opportunities. Special skills needed include:

Working knowledge of native plants (wildflowers, shrubs, trees) common in Columbia

Able to identify common invasive species such as teasel, wintercreeper, bush honeysuckle, burning bush, etc. • Basic understanding of ecology

Familiar with basic stormwater and best management practices (e.g. rain barrels and rain gardens)

Able to efficiently compile landscaping recommendations and electronically transmit management plans to CWY coordinator

If you are interested, please contact Danielle Fox at [email protected]. You can also find more information here. Timesheet Code: COC

Help Remove Invasive Species at a Glade

Restoration Site on Rock Quarry Road The City of Columbia is looking for help in

cutting and treating bush honeysuckles,

black locust, Siberian elm, and other woody

invasive species along stretch of Rock

Quarry Road where the Office of

Sustainability is currently managing to

establish a glade beneath a transmission

line. Participants will learn about

managing invasive vegetation and

establishing a native habitat in an urban

environment. This project is a pilot project

for the City to possibly continue native

habitat restoration beneath transmission lines. The success of this project depends

on the aesthetic value that it may add to the community.

If you are interested, please contact Danielle Fox at [email protected], and

she will let you know about upcoming work dates. You can also find more

information here.

FROG CALLS AND LOOK-ALIKE SPECIES: A DETECTIVE STORY Presentation by Carl

Gerhardt Tuesday, March 13,

2018 @ 7PM LES BOURGEOIS

BISTRO The Presentation will be on the lower level of the Les Bourgeois Vineyards Bistro in Rocheport, MO. Social Hour starts at 6pm. The Bistro Restaurant is now closed on Tuesday, but the bar will be open. You ARE welcome to come early, bring some food and gather with friends before the presentation. Speaker Series attendees are welcome after 5 p.m. Missouri has an abundance of frogs that depend on pools and ponds in the floodplain of the Missouri and other rivers and streams. Carl Gerhardt, a retired biologist with the University of Missouri-Columbia who has been studying frog vocal communication, will discuss the fascinating story of the common gray treefrog. It turns out that what we know as the common gray treefrog is at least two different species that can only be told apart by differences in the male call. Carl discovered the properties of the call that are used by females to recognize males of their own species and to even distinguish among those males to select males that provide “good genes” to her offspring. He’ll share the story of his discovery as a detective story. The latest puzzle regards the evolutionary origins of one of the two species by a form of “instant” speciation – a doubling of the chromosome number.

Carl will play back and describe the calls of the two species: the eastern gray treefrog (Hyla versicolor), which is a tetraploid (4 sets of chromosomes) and the only species found in Boone County and Cope’s gray treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis), which is a diploid like all other frog species in the USA and which occurs in the southern and northern parts of the state. He will also describe his playback experiments to females. By using computer-generated calls, he identified the physical properties of the calls that females not only use to find a male of her species in

Page 12: SEPTEMBER GENERAL MEETING - MU Extensionextension.missouri.edu/boone/documents/MasterNaturalist/...For updated information on advanced training opportunities, please see the online

12

places where both occur but also to find a male of her own species whose sperm will improve the viability and growth rate of her offspring. He will also describe the discovery of multiple origins of the eastern gray treefrog (yes, there are two, if not three origins) and the probable existence of different species of the Cope’s gray treefrog. Advanced Training does not require a timesheet code – only service hours require a timesheet code.
