Servicing and Troubleshooting

DaTARIUS Test Systems.

1. Read me :

This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information on regular service of testers required by the manufacturer, and on how to solve problems that may arise.

Following topics, which are not linked to service or maintenance, are also described in this guide:

• Identification of tester type

• CS-4/WIN software upgrade

• Copying/saving of system configurations

• Creating a diagnostic file

In order to be able to solve a problem, if possible on site, using the service descriptions, it is necessary to first locate its cause.

It is important to note that there are different types of testers, since the service works described in this guide are valid for the following testers only:

/L Local Tester

/R Remote Tester

/SA Stamper Tester

/MF Multiformat Tester

Following testers can only be repaired at DaTARIUS (there are a few exceptions, please contact the DaTARIUS Customer Support Team for more information).

/DL DVD Local Tester

/DSA DVD Stamper Tester

/OT (or OD) Optitest (or Optitest, Desktop Version)

DaTARIUS recommends following operating environment for the best possible reproducibility of the measured values:

Page 2: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

Temperature : 22 +/- 1 °C

Relative humidity : 50 +/- 10 % (non-condensing)

Page 3: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

2. Maintenance works:

are works that have to be regularly performed by the customer (see list below), in order to assure the best performance possible.

How often?

What?

Every second week • calibration of tester

Every third month • Laser current and focus offset adjustment

• Cleaning of lens of pickup head

Once a year • Overall cleaning of tester

• Checking of fan filters

• Exchange wearing parts of drives with a loader made of plastic or of CDCS4/L tester.

Page 4: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

3. Locating problems:

Before checking a tester, please measure the reference CD that was delivered with the tester (currently 4C for CDs and r71s for stampers), this in order to rule out the possibility that the mistake is caused by a disc out of the production. The test report of the DaTARIUS End Test (which is delivered with the system) serves as reference measurement.

Procedure :

• The first and most simple thing to try is to switch the player of and turn it on again (Reset) and to check the downloads on the boards.

• In most of the cases, you will have to exchange several parts of the tester before you will be able to locate the problem. It is therefore advisable to have at your disposal a second tester of the same type or some spare parts.

4.9.2 Player filter:

Remove the plastic cover by turning the screws 90°.

4.10 Temperature too high:

In order for testers to perform as well as possible, it is important to pay attention to the operating environment.

DaTARIUS recommends following operating environment:

Temperature: 22 +/- 1 °C

Relative humidity: 50 +/- 10 % (non -condensing)

Page 30: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

4.11 Setting the display brightness:

When defining the display brightness, it makes sense to leave the tester switched on in order to be able to check the new settings immediately.

Page 31: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

4.12 Checking voltages:

4.12.1 On the power supply unit (PSU):

If one of the LEDs is not on, this means the corresponding voltage has disappeared or one of the fans is defect.

If all LEDs are on, this might mean that one of the voltages has not disappeared, but is lower than required. In such a case, the voltages on the CDBUS board need to be checked.

The power supply units of CDCS4 ( 1x ) testers have 3 Voltage Check LEDs.

The power supply units of CDCS4.2 ( 2x ) testers have 3 Voltage Check LEDs and 2 Fan Check LEDs.

( FAN INT for the fan inside of the power supply unit, , FAN EXT for the fan on the backside of the tester)

Page 32: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

On the backside of CDCS4.2 ( 2x ) testers with an external power supply unit ( PSU10 or PSU11 ) there are 5 Voltage Check LEDs.

Only the LEDs for +15V, -15V and +5V are important here.

4.12.2 Measuring voltages on CDBUS board :

In order to be able to measure the voltage, the tester’s front panel needs to be removed.

Measure the +15V- and the –15V voltage for analogue GND, and the +5V voltage for digital GND.

Page 33: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

Following voltage tolerances are applicable:

Voltage : Tolerance :

+15V, -15V +/- 1 V

+5V +/- 0,2 V

If the above mentioned tolerances are exceeded, the reason for this can be found in the following ways.

4.13 Loss of voltage :

In case of loss of voltage, 4 items should be checked:

4.13.1 Check plug between power supply unit and CDBUS board :

Due to the transitional resistance of the plug, the voltage can get lower than the allowed minimum value.

Image below: plugs on the backside of the CDBUS board.

Page 34: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

After removing the front panel of the tester, you can easily reach this plug from the front side.

Try and move the plug up and down a bit in order to create a better contact again.

4.13.2 Checking plug on power supply unit :

STEPS:

1. Remove the back panel of the tester,

2. Tighten up all the screws marked on the image below:

Page 35: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

4.13.3 Exchanging power supply unit :

If power is supplied to the tester via an external power supply unit ( PSU10 or PSU11 ), first try to connect the tester to another channel of the power supply unit, before exchanging the unit.

In case the tester has a built-in power supply unit, first remove the back panel of the tester.

Unscrew the 6 screws (3 of which are marked on the image below, the other three screws are located on the bottom side of the power supply unit) and release the plug marked on the image below.

4.13.4 Voltage drop is caused by a board : To check this case, you will have to separately remove the boards out of the tester and measure the voltages on the CDBUS board.

Page 36: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

4.14 Cleaning the lens:

For cleaning a lens, following items are needed:

- cotton buds,

- methanol or acetone.

STEPS:

1. Remove the drive out of the tester (not applicable for 4.0/SA- and 4.2/MF testers)

2. Keep the pick-up head with one finger in a fxed position (see image below)

3. Put some Methanol (or acetone) on the cotton bud and gently rub the surface of the lens with it. Make sure to move the cotton bud always in the same direction. If rubbing is done in a circular motion, dirt might cause scratches on the lens.

( f you look at the lens in such a way that a light source is reflected in it, you can easily detect dirt on the lens’ surface).

Page 37: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

4.15 Adjusting the chuck :

First the drive needs to be removed.

On the image below you see the two screws via which the height of the clamping device can be adjusted.

Insert a CD in the drive and set the two screws in such a way that the chuck does not touch the clamping device when the disc is spinning.

If the height is correct and still some scraping noise can be heard when the disc is spinning, you should check whether dirt on the loader is causing the noise.

4.16 Checking/exchanging silomeres :

In order to be able to exchange the silomeres, the tester’s front panel needs to be removed.

The 4 dampers are located on the positions marked on the image above, front side and back side). Depending on the type of drive that is built in, the dampers can be located on slightly different positions. The dampers, however, can always be easily recognized and are always located on the corners of the loader plate (bottom side).

Page 38: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

If the dampers are pressed together, the position of the chuck is no longer correct and the chuck scrapes against the chuck holder. In an extreme case it is even possible that the loader plate is positioned directly on the crosspieces, in such a case even the slightest vibrations will cause errors.

Types of silomeres:

Green: are not used any longer. All green silomeres are replaced by yellow ones.

Yellow: for all drives with a loader made of metal.

Brown: only for drives of CDCS4/SA and MF testers.

Black: (with springs) for all drives with a loader made of plastic.

Page 39: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

4.17 Exchanging wearing parts :

This service work can only be performed on drives of CDCS4 (1X) test players, which have a loader that is made of plastic.

All wearing parts can be ordered via the DaTARIUS Customer Support Office .

In order to be able to perform the service works described below, the drive has to be removed out of the tester.

4.17.1 Drives with a loader made of plastic :

Chuck and guide wheels : If the chuck is lowered, the middle part of the chuck (large circle on image below) fits exactly onto the turn table. Should the chuck be damaged, it will no longer fit onto the turn table and the disc cannot be clamped correctly any more.

If the guide wheels are completely worn or got lost, the chuck will be positioned on the turn table with too much pressure.

Page 40: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

Guide mechanism : If the guide mechanism (see image below) is worn out, the loader will not open/close smoothly or can even get stuck.

Page 41: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

Reed switches & loader wheels : If one of the reed switches is defect, the loader motor will not stop if the loader has reached its final position.

If the loader wheels are worn out, the loader will not open/close smoothly or can even get stuck.

Page 42: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

Loader motor rubber bands : Loader gets stuck or opens/closes very slowly if the rubber bands are worn out.

Springs : There are 2 springs ( see image below, the second spring is located on the opposite side), that exert tension on the clamping mechanism of the chuck. If these springs lose tension, the disc will not be perfectly clamped on the turn table.

Page 43: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

4.17.2 Drives with a loader made of metal :

4.25 Software upgrade :

There are two ways to install on a system a new release of the DaTARIUS CS-4/WIN Control and Management Software. You can either replace the old version with the newer one or have both versions at the same time, so you can toggle between the two.

Software upgrade :

Note: the software version currently installed on the system will be deleted. After the software upgrade only the new version of the software will be available on the system.

All configurations and measurement results, however, will be copied from the old software version to the new one.

Procedure:

Run the programme called ‚setup.exe’ (installation CD) and select ‚Upgrade’.

After you have installed the new software on your system, you will have to download all the new CS-4download files to every tester in the system.

New installation:

During a completely new installation all configurations are normally overwritten with the DaTARIUS standard configurations.

If you rename the ‚old’ CS-4 programme folder c:\cdcs4win (to for instance: cdcs4old ) before the installation, the currently installed software version remains on the PC. This allows you to switch between the new and the old software version.

(Note: when the programme is started, the software and settings saved under c:\cdcs4win will be used.)

In order to perform an installation, run the programme setup.exe (installation CD) and select ‘Typical’ (= new installation).

If the installation is finished, you can copy the configurations of the software release that was installed before and copy the measurement results that are saved in the default directory of the previous software release c:\cdcs4win\dat (for instance c:\cdcs4old\dat ) in the new directory c:\cdcs4win\dat.

After you have installed the new software on your system, you will have to download all the new CS-4download files to every tester in the system.

Page 63: Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems.Servicing and Troubleshooting DaTARIUS Test Systems. 1. Read me : This service and troubleshooting guide contains tips and information

If you would like to switch to the previous (old) software package, you will have to undo the above mentioned renaming and copying of measurement results, and afterwards you will need to make the downloads from the previously installed software package.

4.26 Copying system configuration:

The system configuration is saved in several files with the extension *.cfg under c:\cdcs4win\cfg.

In order to save these configurations, simply copy these files onto a floppy disc or into a directory.

If you would like to copy these configurations to another system, simply copy all the files with extension *.cfg to the following directory of the other system: c:\cdcs4win\cfg.

Changes of configuration are applied after a restart of the CS-4/WIN software package.

4.27 Creating a diagnostic report:

Procedure:

- Select from the main CS-4/WIN menu ‚Report’ / ‚Diagnostic Report’

- Tick all the relevant boxes and click on ‚to file’

The diagnostic report is called cs4WIN.dia and is saved in the directory c:\cdcs4win\log.
