News from the Community Partnership on Aging

Executive Director, Wendy Albin Sattin

Although summer is winding down, we are still seeing the bounty of local produce in our stores and farmer’s markets. It is definitely the season to enjoy the ripest, sweetest, crispest produce you can get. Here are some tips to help you find the best foods for your body and your budget.

1. Look for important nutrients: Make sure you eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients you need. Your plate should look like a rainbow—bright, colored foods are always the best

choice! A healthy meal should include: • Lean protein (lean meats, seafood, eggs, beans) • Fruits and vegetables (think orange, red, green, and purple) • Whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat pasta) • Low-fat dairy (milk and its alternatives)

Remember to choose foods that are high in fiber and low in sodium or salt. Also, look for Vitamin D, an important mineral as we age.

2. Read labels: The healthiest foods are whole foods. These are often found on the perimeter of the grocery store in the produce, meat, and dairy sections. When you do eat packaged foods, be a smart shopper! Read the labels to find items that are lower in fat, added sugars, and sodium.

3. Drink! Water is an important nutrient too! Don’t let yourself get dehydrated—drink small amounts of fluids consistently throughout the day. Tea, coffee, and water are your best choices. Keep fluids with sugar and salt at a minimum, unless your doctor has suggested otherwise.

Be sure to check out our Mobile Farmer’s Market at the South Euclid Community Center on September 6 and September 20 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. If you received WRAAA Senior Nutrition Program Farmer’s Market Coupons, you can use them here. Don’t forget, all Farmer’s Market coupons must be used by October 31, 2017!

Remember- eat healthy to stay healthy!

Community Partnership on Aging February 2017 ~ 8 ~

“The five communities got together to offer programs and services to senior people.” “A place to meet new people and friends.” “People working together for the good of all. People caring and helping each other.” “A great meeting place for people and activities.” “A place for comradery, friendship and good food. A place to combat loneliness.”

Community Partnership on Aging was formed in 1978 as a joint venture between the mayors of South Euclid, Lyndhurst and Highland Heights as an effort to support the growing needs of older adults in the community.
