News from the Community Partnership on Aging

Executive Director, Stacey O’Brien

Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program will offer several opportunities throughout the summer to purchase locally grown produce at mobile Farmer’s Markets. The schedule is not available yet, but check our Facebook page for up to date information about Markets.

We were very excited to have been one of four collaboratives selected as a recipient of the Cuyahoga County Senior Center Innovation Grant. CPA will partner with Cleveland Heights, Maple Heights and Solon on this planning grant, which will seek to enhance the safety and independence of older adults through minor home modifications, simple maintenance tasks and repairs, and assistance with coordination

of required work. The project will include an independent-living risk evaluation and information and referral service for home owners in the collaborating cities. Volunteers will be sought from corporate, non-profit, civic, school and faith-based organizations.

The restaurants in Cedar Center are offering a "Taste" of their businesses Thursday, July 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and all you have to do it bring your appetite and a ten dollar bill! Enjoy a mid-summer evening with Rick and Sharona as they entertain you with their lounge act. Raffle baskets will be available for bidding. Proceeds from the event will help eligible older residents of South Euclid make needed repairs and modifications to their homes that will allow them to age safely and independently. For tickets ($10 each), call Jim at 216-291-4358 or stop into our South Euclid office during business hours. Parking will be available throughout Cedar Center.

This year, for the first time, we’ll be initiating an annual campaign. The Summer of Giving will be formally kicked off in August. Our agency is fortunate to be trusted with meeting the needs of older adults all year long to ensure they have opportunities to access the programs and services that will support their aging in place. Providing those programs and services can be costly and we are hopeful that you will give to the extent you are able! Stay tuned in the coming months for activities and information about our first-ever Summer of Giving.

Community Volunteer Opportunity

Hawken School is once again looking for volunteers to eat lunch with preschoolers once a week. The activity provides the opportunity for these young children to learn social skills as they engage with one another and the older adult sitting at their table. Several volunteers are already helping and really love the interaction. (And as a bonus, lunch is provided!) Community Partnership on Aging July 2016 ~ 8 ~

CPA Social Work and Outreach Services

Wednesday, June 15, 2016 was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse can be physical, emotional, financial and sexual. It also includes people who are neglected and those who neglect themselves (self-neglect). Elders who are abused are twice as likely to be hospitalized, four times as likely to go into nursing homes and three times as likely to die. While most abusers are family members, trusted professionals and complete strangers may also target older adults. Abuse can happen in any setting.

Elder abuse can be prevented if everyone would treat older Americans with respect and care. Learning the warning signs of abuse and knowing how to report it is another great step. Elder abuse is significantly under-reported. Cuyahoga County Division of Senior and Adult Services estimates that for every five cases of abuse/neglect, only one is reported. For resources or information, call and ask to speak with a CPA social worker at 216-291-3902. To report suspected abuse or neglect, contact Adult Protective Services at 216-420-6700.

Transportation with Community Partnership on Aging is available for older adults age 60+ who reside in one of the CPA communities. Trips are offered to and from CPA Lunches/Programs, for group grocery shopping trips and for medical appointments. Transportation is provided by STC (Senior Transportation Connection). Residents must register in advance by contacting a CPA Social Worker. To register, South Euclid/Lyndhurst/Highland Heights residents may call 216-291-3902 and Mayfield Heights/Mayfield Village residents may call 440-442-2628. Grocery trips and medical appointment trips are scheduled through STC at 1-800-983-4782. Trips to CPA Lunch and Programs are scheduled by CPA staff with advance notice.

JULY TRIP OFFICE HOURS: by appointment Reservations required for all trips – please call us to sign up!

We said goodbye to Elyse in early June and wished her luck as she began a new full time position. The Lyndhurst office will be staffed intermittently so we suggest you call first if you are trying to sign up for a trip or make a payment. Additional details about the trips below can be obtained from the office.

Upcoming trips:

Cleveland History Center (8/10, $66)— the Cleveland History Center, operated by the Western Reserve Historical Society, encompasses the Euclid Beach Park Carousel, Bingham-Hanna & Hay-McKinney Mansions, and the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum. A guided tour of the Hay-Mckinney Mansion, will be followed by time to explore on your own. Be sure to stop by the carousel – admission includes a free ride! After we wrap up at the History Center, we will be headed just down the road to L’Albatros Brasserie + Bar for lunch. L’Albatros is a traditional French brasserie, set in an old carriage house on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. There we will enjoy our choice of soup or salad, a choice of entrée, and then choice of dessert. We hope you can join us for this enriching program!

Wine Tour of Northeast Ohio (9/21, $55) - We have a couple more spots left for this trip around Geneva, Ohio. We will be starting with Ferrante Vineyard, where we will begin with a wine tasting, and then will enjoy their famous pasta and meatballs and dessert. Stops will also be made at Debonné Vineyard and Grand River Cellars Winery, which offers a beautiful fireplace inside and many hand painted murals for visitors to enjoy while they taste. Our final destination is Harpersfield Vineyard.

Century Village (10/18, $64) - The fully restored Century Village Museum, located in Burton, is an authentic representation of a Western Reserve Village from 1798 to the end of the 19th century. The Museum contains over twenty historically authentic buildings, more than 15,000 museum artifacts, and a working farm with a sugar bush for making maple syrup. We’ll tour the property and then head to lunch at Punderson State Park Lodge & Conference Center. Lunch will include a house salad, choice of entrée, and dessert. We look forward to hosting you on this historical tour!

Entrees such as a Philly Cheesesteak (actual photo below!) are served at our Café Lunch or Lunch ‘N’ Movie each month. The Philly Cheesesteak lunch included the sandwich, waffle fries, cucumber/tomato salad and dessert—all for $3. Where can you get a better deal (we know the answer is nowhere!)? Check out the July and August lunch info on page 4 of this newsletter, call a friend (or we can introduce you to someone), and join us!
