Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the

Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth

and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be? Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is

a child, an infant newly born. On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of

parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices; every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child himself. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's

story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet

Jesus Christ.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

“Festivals are fun for kids, fun for parents and offer a welcome break from the stresses of the nuclear family. The sheer quantities of people make life easier: loads of adults for the adults to talk to and loads of kids for the kids to play with.” ~ Tom Hodgkinson

There is something to be said for sheer numbers. When a lot of people gather together, that generally says something. This is the time of year for gatherings of sort. Numbers of people have been and will be gathering for graduation open houses. These events help people to celebrate their achievement even as they look ahead to new possibilities.

The summer usually sees a fair share of weddings as well, though more and more seem to be taking place in the fall. The gatherings at weddings celebrate life and love and the promise that love brings to people. Generations gather together and share their stories and pledge to support those newly wed.

Of course, this is also the season for festivals. Churches and communities host many different types of festivals during the summer. Some highlight carnival games and rides. Some highlight music. Some highlight art or classic cars. These festivals give people a chance to enjoy some things they might not be able to have on a regular basis.

Yes, gathering together can be a good thing. It is in gatherings that we find mutual support, shared recreation, and the exchange of memories. That is one of the reasons that our weekly gatherings at Mass are so important. While we can always pray at home, there is “power in numbers.” Part of the benefit of numbers is that we can see that our faith does not matter just to us alone but to a larger group of people.

Sharing the faith with one another, telling the stories of our faith, singing together, partaking of the Eucharist as one family, these are all ways that the people of God can support and celebrate one another. Our time together is extremely important. It makes us realize that we are a part of a much larger family.

We have been having these gatherings for nearly 2,000 years now. In all that time, the faith has been celebrated and reinforced. Take that faith out with you today and share it with those you encounter.

FAITH ACTION: Your prayer life might be private; but, your faith should be celebrated in public. Share your faith today.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE The new pastor moved his things into his office and came across the former pastor, taking his items out. The former pastor said, “I left three envelopes in your desk. If you have any trouble, open them.” Well, of course the new pastor thought he would never have to use them, but in his youthful enthusiasm, he tried to change the songs used at Mass. This made the choir furious and there was a lot of ugly talk about the new pastor. He remembered the envelopes and opened the first one. It said, “You haven’t been here long, but you decided to make a change in the music program; now everyone is mad. Tell everyone that the former pastor told you this was a change I suggested.” The young pastor did that and it worked well. He had been there about a year and a half when he tried to change the way the deacons would function at the parish. This made the deacons and their wives really mad. So he went back to the drawer and got the second envelope: “You did something to make the deacons mad and there’s talk of replacing you. Tell them this is the official diocesan policy; that you thought they wanted to comply, but it doesn’t make any difference to you what they do.” He tried this, and again it worked great. You guessed it, after three years, he told the Knights of Columbus that they were going to have to make major changes. The Knights said they were going to quit helping the parish. So he went back to the third and final envelope: “You’ve been here about three years and you finally got the Knights of Columbus mad. The only thing to do is to take out a pen and paper. Next, prepare three envelopes.”

LAST DAYS FOR OUR FESTIVAL The last days for our parish festival for this summer are this weekend, Saturday, June 23rd and Sunday, June 24th. If you have not had the time to come and enjoy yourself yet, we hope that you can find some time before it is all over. On Sunday evening, the winning raffle tickets will be drawn in the big tent. Thank you to the many people who have been working so hard all week to provide a good time for all. Thank you, as well, to all who have come out to enjoy the festival. We hope you have been having a good time!

served as the 2017 Diocese of Gary Synod Coordinator.

Constructing my Life According to God’s Blueprint Have you ever asked yourself any of these questions?

while also following Jesus (as his faithful disciple)? If I do things God’s way, will I be joyful or just plain

miserable? Learn what our contemporary Catholic tradition teaches about love, sex, and relationships: how to live a

deeply meaningful life. The answers might surprise you! Dr. Melanie Barrett, Professor of Moral Theology, University

of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary
