During the last month our Federal member, Ross Vasta, and Hon. Ken Wyatt, the Federal Minister for Aged Care, visited our Shed for Men’s Health Week. Ken spoke to us about health issues faced by many men in our community and what he saw as the important role that Men’s Sheds play in supporting men.

The following is a summary of some of Ken’s comments.A boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old. Right from the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents and die earlier than their female counterparts.

Accidents, cancer and heart disease account for the majority of male deaths. Then, men take their own lives at four times the rate of women. The highest suicide risk group in our community is older men.

One of the primary aims of our Men’s Shed, and Sheds around Australia, is to improve the health and wellbeing of our members and reduce the number of men who are at risk from preventable health issues that may stem from social and emotional isolation.

Ken Wyatt made the observation as he walked through our Shed and talked to a number of ourmembers, that along with a great building we at Mount Gravatt Men’s Shed have a sense of belongingand community that he could feel. Ken noted the way our men were talking, and joking, with each other and the way we related to each other.

I, for one was encouraged by Ken’s observations because it says to me that we must, in some way, be achieving our primary goal - to seek to improve the health and wellbeing of our members.

Thanks for the part each of you play in creating and maintaining the sense of belonging and community we have at our Shed.

See you at the Shed.

SHED SOCIAL MEETING REPORT 4 June 2018

Meeting opened at 11am

Apologies: Gerry Henderson, Colin Smith, Bart McKnight, Ron Frazer, Jim Pollock, Brian Wandel, Dave Williamson

President’s Comments Peter Lindsay Peter thanked those members who helped with the Rotary book sale over the weekend of 25 to 27 May. MGMS assists every year with the setup and clean up of the book sale and Rotary is always grateful for our help. The MGMS annual church service was held on Sunday 27 May at St Bart’s church in Mount Gravatt with 35 members attending. This also is an annual event and is much appreciated by the attendees. Peter recognised and thanked this month’s Shed Heroes – the Office team, who are crucial for the smooth running of the Shed. Peter mentioned particularly Rob Johnson and Lance Roberts, both long-time members of the Office team who recently retired from their posts. Peter also thanked the long-serving Shed Librarian, David Robinson. From a broader perspective, Peter acknowledged the one-third of members who volunteered to help with running MGMS in some capacity last year. This is an outstanding effort by so many of our members. For any members who have not yet volunteered, there are always openings for more volunteers.

Secretary David Crossley David said that information about renewing MGMS membership for 2018/19 will be sent to members during the next couple of weeks. The information will be sent by email except for those members without email addresses who will receive the information through Australia Post. As in previous years, the information pack will include a personalised Medical Record Form and members are asked to fill in the form and return it to the Secretary. This ensures that MGMS has up-to-date medical information for all members. David mentioned two National Health Week events: a visit to the Shed on Monday 11 June by our local Federal MP, Ross Vasta, together with the Minister for Aged Care Hon Ken Wyatt, followed by a Seniors Forum with Ross and the Minister at Mount Gravatt Bowls Club. David said that the MGMS mid-year lunch for members and partners will be held on Friday 20 July at Redlands IndigiScapes Centre. A sign-on sheet is in the Shed Office.

Welfare Elwyn Jackson New members and visitors were welcomed, as well as the 93 members present. Four new members have joined in the past month. Nineteen members with birthdays in June werecelebrated by singing “Happy Birthday”. Over the last couple of weeks, the wives of three members have passed away.

Memorial Walk Brian Wheeler

The Memorial Walk on the north side of the Shed contains spaces for plaques acknowledgingMGMS members who have passed away. On Saturday 23 June, an event will be held for relatives of departed members to explain the process for placing plaques. This event is for the relatives only.

Workshop Operations Lloyd Akeroyd Lloyd showed photos of various items recently made in the Workshop, including: the recently completed renovated rocking horse; about 250 blackboards for Papua New Guinea schoolchildren; stands for Braille printers - a prototype has been completed and six more are to be made.Lloyd also mentioned a recent project for Channel 9 who needed various sporting goods to be cut in half for demonstration purposes.

Building & Grounds Bill Semple Bill said that the verandah awning at the western end of the Shed has now been completed – this was a major building project. The annual maintenance inspection of the building and grounds has been completed. The inspection showed that the building and grounds are generally in good shape, though some small items need fixing. There will be a working bee on Friday 15 June to fix these items.

Recreation John Wicks John said that the Recreation Operating Committee (ROC) is calling for ideas for new recreation activities. The cleaning group needs more volunteers once a month on a Wednesday or Friday morning, starting at 10.30 am.

MEN’S SHED COOKING GROUP

St Barts Anglican Church Mt Gravatt We gather for worship Every Sunday at 7.00 and 9.00 am Car Logan Road and Mountain Street

The second year of the Cooking Group has begun and the participants are building their skills so much so that they have just made the most delicious apple pies and sausage rolls. Anzac Biscuits are also on their repertoire.

During the year we have made apple turnovers and scones for functions held by the Shed Committee.

The purpose of the group is to produce nutritional meals (with a vegetarian optional), that are low cost. This aim has been greatly assisted by the refurbishment of the Shed kitchen. The two separate ovens have allowed us a safe environment to make more baked products.

Thanks to some generous donations of top quality utensils, the participants now only have to bring ingredients to the classes.

In the future there are considerations for a recipe book to be produced. Lynn Albin

PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP NEWS Good News on the Admin front. Gary Earl has agreed to run the admin for the photography group. Look out soon for an email from Gary regarding the continuing of the photo group.

Meantime, Gary has set up a new album, so get your assignment photos for June ready and post to the "HANDS" album at the following link. https://photos.app.goo.gl/BeBEpLufFXywLFBYA

As usual you can comment on them, and Gary will explain the voting system to you before the end of the month. I would like to thank Gary for taking this small but important role on, as I am sure you will all support him the best you can through the rest of the year. Cheers, Colin Gilies Colin , Good going and many thanks for your valuable contribution to the Photography Group. Ed.

STRANGE THINGS AT HEARTFIT SESSION

(New Balance, Coordination and Muscle Building Exercises)

There is a softly-spoken Shed member who just loves being surrounded by books. It is the Shed librarian, David Robinson. The space on David’s bookshelves imposes a limit of the number of books that can be on the shelves. However, David’s long-term position has its problems when the members ‘donate’ books of various age and topics. Hetries to provide the space for the said members donations but can’t always do so.

Several times a year David makes executive decisions as to what to keep and what to move onto the book sales. This is very hard as David has a gentle heart that would worry him that he was insulting a member’s donation as unworthy. David, your input to the Shed library is noted and appreciated by many members. Nev O’Brien

Update your pool room with a new “PIANO BAR” All you need is your imagination, and wecan GIVE you the piano. Basil Wood

Keeping INDEPENDENTLY MOBILE is the aim of participants in the Shed’s HeartFIT sessions.

Our Personal Trainer and member, Bruce Collins, is a professional exercise practitioner who leads groups in the Mt Gravatt area.

Shed sessions are held on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 1.00 to 2.00 pm . The activities are different each week. Come and try. First session is free.

BUS TRIP TO MOUNT TAMBORINE 7 JUNE 2018

We left at 8.00am and travelled to Mt.Tamborine via Waterford andLogan Village. After dropping off the ladies and visitors at the older shopping area the men continued to the Mt.Tamborine Men’s Shed.

The Shed has 50 members (approx.) is well set up with good equipment and an adequate-sized shed. We were warmlywelcomed and left just before midday with blue sky trying to break through.

After picking up the ladies and visitors we drove to the Gallery Area for one and a half hours to enjoy a meal in the 20-30 cafes/restaurants and numerous craft/gift/clothing outlets to visit.

After lunch we had a tour around the area hosted by our Bill Dewhurst who had a hobby farm there for 25 years.

Even though I had visited Mt Tamborine on numerous occasions we saw areas and views never seen before. Afternoon tea was at the St. Bernard's Hotel and Lodge which was built right on the edge of mountain with views to the Gold Coast.

Bill Dewhurst again took us all on another scenic tour before we left for home arriving at our Shed by 4.30 pm.Many great reports by participants about the many different parts that make up Mt Tamborine; the lush countryside and the views.

A great tour - again we must thank Bill Dewhurst forhis commentary. Len Fortescue

During our bus trip to Mt Tamborine on Thursday 7 June, while the ladies explored shopping opportunities in the township members visited the Mt Tamborine Men’s Shed to say hello and share thoughts and ideas.

Vice President Allan Meyers made everyone welcome and we owe him and his members a strong vote of thanks for an enjoyable and instructive visit.

INDOOR BOWLING GROUPWe have increased our membership of the group this year and also our ability to play on the carpet floor.

Usually indoor bowls is played in a hall with a level wooden floor with the bowls mat running with thegrain of timber. We meet each Thursday afternoon and have 8 to 12 bowlers in attendance and enjoy the companionship. Extra players are still welcome as we have two mats which means 16 players can play on the day. Charlie Sticklen

SOCIAL MEETING REPORT CONT. Travel Kevin Schneidewin

The trip to Woodgate is now scheduled for 25 to 29 June and there is room for more participants. Planning is proceeding for a cruise to Papua New Guinea in October. At the sausage sizzle on 18 June, there will be a presentation by a travel agent about a trip to the Cook Islands next year,

Guest Speaker Craig Zonca ABC Radio Craig is the breakfast show presenter on ABC local radio in Brisbane. Craig told stories about his experiences during 15 years with the ABC, including stints throughout rural Queensland. He described radio as the “theatre of the mind”. He said he enjoys radio because it’s possible to build a close connection between the presenter and the audience. He spent five years as the presenter of the Country Hour from Brisbane and the call he most remembered was from the Senior Ranger in the Simpson Desert who called in on a satellite phone to take part in the quiz. For this man, by himself in an extremely remote area, radio was his companion.

Next MGMS Social Meeting is on Monday 2 July @ 10:30 for 11:00 followed by lunch. The guest speaker will be MGMS Patron Bishop Doug Stevens, talking about “Inspiring Positive Behaviour”.
