FOR THE MOST EXTREME CONDITIONS IN THE WORLD
WWW.RAB.EQUIPMENT
Rab Carrington started his company in Sheffield in 1981. The company was based on two things: A deep understanding of what climbers and mountaineers need, and a commitment to practical gear that works. Those same qualities of innovation, integrity and function have endured, remaining at the heart of the Rab® brand today. Rab have supported ShAFF since its inception and we are proud to be involved with one of the world’s leading adventure film festivals. Since 1981 we have been making clothing and equipment to keep climbers, mountaineers and adventurers safe and comfortable in the most extreme conditions. During that time we have also worked closely with photographers and filmmakers to document the achievements of our athlete team and of the wider climbing community.

about shaff
‘How To’ Guide.
There are more than 100 films showing at ShAFF this year.
There are also talks and Q&As with elite athletes and adventurers.
Films are grouped into themed sessions each lasting about 90
minutes. Sessions are spread across the weekend to help you
maximise your viewing.
There are two Adrenaline, three Bike (two MTB and one Road),
three Climb, one Mountain, three Run, two Ski & Board, four
Spirit of Adventure and one Surf & Kayak sessions.
There are also four screenings of our special ‘Young Adventurer’
family-friendly children’s sessions with two more ‘Too Cool For School’
screenings to bridge the gap into secondary school, and a further
two Teen Screen screenings for teenagers.
If that’s not enough, there’s our ‘Adventure Bites’ never-ending loop
of the best short films from the festival screening all weekend, and
especially for 2015 to celebrate our tenth birthday, a 2 hour loop of
classic films, one from each year the festival has run.
And as part of the new Festival Fringe you can enjoy free events like
the Viewranger Technology Forum and Cycle Touring Forum as well as
the MyOutdoors Second Hand Kit Sale and the Lowepro Adventure
Photography Exhibition.
In between times you can relax in the café / bar with music curated
from the films by Sheffield DJ Paul Hodgson.
Tickets are sold for individual sessions and events. You can buy
tickets individually or in a discounted carnet.
Celebrating 10 years!
Thank you for joining us for Sheffield Adventure Film Festival’s
10th birthday, presented by outdoor technical equipment
specialists Rab and supporting the Sheffield Helipad Appeal.
It’s a decade since Matt Heason started screening a Best of
Kendal Mountain Festival Night at the Showroom Cinema.
To celebrate we’re screening a record-number of films – 116
at the last count. We reckon that means we now screen more
films than any other adventure festival in the world – right here in
the heart of Sheffield, the UK’s Outdoor City. Matt’s also picked
his favourites from the past decade for our ShAFF Classics
loop with all proceeds going to the Sheffield Helipad Appeal.
Thank you also to all our sponsors and partners and in
particular our team of volunteers, headed up by Martin
Blackburn, and Dave Mycroft from MyOutdoors.co.uk for
organising our first ever Festival Fringe.
Enjoy the party, Matt Heason and Lissa Cook

of the films to be screened about a week or so before
the festival once the judges have decided on this year’s
winners. This session usually sells out so don’t wait for us
to post the film details, just trust us that they will be the

Despite heading out to the Dolomites with the intention of merely cleaning and preparing the route, Dave went on to climb the line in suboptimal conditions, shattering his personal expectations.

The Maestro of MongoliaOne fine day Jerry Aylmer found himself in Tajikistan, in
possession of a totally unsuitable car.
He had quit his trading job in London in order to try and
make a difference rather than a profit. Having driven
an ambulance from the UK to donate to a hospital in
Tajikistan, he now had a new mission – to deliver a small
car to a charity in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.
A sturdy 4x4 would be the normal minimum requirement
for the 10,000km journey on terrible roads at nearly
5,000m altitude with temperatures as low as minus 20C.
Instead, Jerry had Marvin, a Rover Maestro.
His film is a story of fascinating people, yurts, blizzards
and being held up at gunpoint; a journey of self discovery
while getting lost in the vast Mongolian wilderness.
The OriginalIn 1974 Gordy Ainsleigh competed against the horses in a
100 mile trail ride through the Sierra Nevada mountains...
on foot. In true pioneering spirit he wanted to achieve
something that others thought impossible.

100 mile footraces in the world, The Western States 100.
‘The Original’ recounts Gordy Ainsleigh’s original run and
explores of the growth of ultra-distance trail running.

Wild Women – Ellen BrennanThe world’s fastest flying woman, Ellen Brennan, shows us why wingsuit flying is worth the risk. Her interview gives us an unprecedented look into an often misunderstood sport and puts a very human face on what appears to be a superhuman feat.
Wild Women – Faith DickeyFaith Dickey is a soft-spoken Texan with a long list of achievements in the world of highlining. If there is anyone who proves how little gender matters in sport it’s her. Although she is not into tricklining she holds all of the womens’ world records and an incredible list of achievements including being the first woman to pass the 100 meter mark on a slackline and being the only woman who regularly free solos highlines.
Wild Women – Hannah BarnesYeti Cycles pro rider Hannah Barnes got into cycling relatively late and it was 2005 before she did her first MTB race, aged 18. This year she’s been racing the Enduro World Series.
Wild Women – Shauna CoxseyAt only 21 years old, Shaun Coxsey is Britain’s best competition climber. After a nail-biting season she’s ranked second in the world. Shauna talks us through her inspiring philosophy toward life, competition, and sport. This young woman should be a role model
for all climbers.
X Box To IceAndy Kirkpatrick, one of the UK’s leading climbers, takes his kids in the depth of the Norwegian winter, to follow in the footsteps of the wartime heroes of Telemark. These Norwegian resistance fighters skied over the seemingly impenetrable Norwegian mountains to thwart the Nazi Atomic weapons programme, and have become a byword for bravery.
Andy is inspired by their achievements, and wants some of that tough, can do spirit to be part of his kids – 16 year old Ella, and 13 year old Euen’s – upbringing. He also believes in general terms that exposing children to risk is part of a responsible and balanced patenting plan. So, he takes them to Norway to do a 4 day wild ski adventure in challenging conditions. As they head into driving storms with just a tent, has the KirkPatrick family bitten off more than they can chew?

Calling all women in adventureJoin Our Network
Women in adventure sports are taking centre stage at this
year’s Sheffield Adventure Film Festival.
In the past couple of years we’ve been criticised about the lack of
women on the big screen. This year, in partnership with BMC TV,
Women Climb, Sport is Beautiful, Lowepro and MyOutdoors.
We’ve made a real effort to encourage more women filmmakers
and athletes to submit films.
• We’re proud to have doubled the number of films featuring female
athletes and/or made by female directors and producers.
• We have created a new Best Women In Adventure Film prize.
• We have a new Women in Adventure Film Judge.
• We’ll be screening the winner of the BMC TV Women in Mountain
Adventure Film competition.
• Lowepro and MyOutdoors are running a special Women in
Adventure Photography Exhibition and competition.
We’re also launching the Women in Adventure Sports Network
(16.45 Saturday, Invitation Only). Our panel of guests will discuss
whether we’re starting to see a shift towards seeing equal numbers
of women in adventure sports on the big screen, behind the camera
and in the audience.
• Professional stuntwoman Steph Carey
• American ultra-runner Nikki Kimball
• Climber Mina Leslie-Wujastyk
• Everest summiteer Squash Falconer
• British filmmaker Jen Randall (Light Shed Productions)
• US based producer Brenda Piekarski (Adventure Minnesota Films)
