    of Maryland, but his wife, Dorcas Bradway) Sherwood, was boniin New Jersey. After their marriage, prior to 1809, they lived inHamilton county, Ohio. Both parents died in Warren county, thefather when Jonathan was seventeen years old. He remained on thehome farm, helpful an d industrious in h is m ot he r s interests untilhis marriage August 20, 1837. Three y ea rs l at er he bought whatwas known as one of the good, farming properties of Washingtontownship an d upon this farm he remained until 1848-9. In th emeanwhile the hamlet of Freeport, now Oregonia, situated two andone-half miles west of his birthplace, had become of larger importance because of the building of the Little Miami railroad, andJonathan Sherwood, with shrewd foresight, realized the businessopportunities offered in this direction and took advantage of them.He moved to Oregonia and here became a man of wide interests,and built up many important lines of business through his enterprise. ^During a part of the time he was mainly concerned in merchandising, but his activities subsequently extended to milling,grain and produce buying, and slaugh tering hogs. He continuedactive in business life at Oregonia until 1860, then sold his interestsand retired to a farm he had b ought in Massie township, where heremained in terested in general farming unti l the close of his life,his de ath oc curring November 24, 1890, when he had re ached th eage of seventy-five years and three months. He was a man ofsterling business qualities, upright in his dealings with his fellowmen, ever hejpful in movements looking to the welfare of his stateand community, and liberal in his support of church organizations.The^ only public office he ever consented to accept was that ofjustice of the peace, in which he served acceptably for one term, atth e c on cl us io n o f w hi ch he declined fur ther honors.

    Henry Sherwood, who, at the time of death, was one of Warren county s most aged residents, was born at Columbia, in Hamilton county, Ohio, July 13, 1807. He was the oldes t child of Thomasand Dorcas Bradway) Sherwood, who removed from Columbiaand settled in Warren county when he was two years old. As hegrew to manhood, an obedient and industrious son, he assisted inthe development of his father s pioneer farm and throughout hisactive life was continuously, concerned in agricultural pursuits. Inhis youth, in association with his brother, Jonathan, he engaged forseveral years in burning charcoal, which industry at that time wasprofitable. Soon after his marriage, in 1833, he purchased andsettled upon a farm in Washington township, two miles southeastof Oregonia, where he carried on a.gricultural operations until 1880,when he reti red and moved to Waynesville, which continued hisplace of residence during the rest of his life, his death occurringApriH2. 1898. when almost ninety-oneyears old. Although a manof quiet life, his sterlingcharacter was recognized by his fellow citizens, and^ on many occasions they called upon him to bear theresponsibilities of public office. For eighteen years, from 1851 to1868, he served as a county commissioner, and formany years astownship trustee, Iknd appraiser and justice of the peace.

    years has been a continuous resident of Oregonia since 1861, inwhich year the Sherwood store, of which he has ever since beenproprietor was established on the same foundation of businesintegrity that It has ever since maintained.     f of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Jeffery) Sherwoodttended the country school near the Bake-oven farm, the localname given to his father s property, and was ten years old whencrL 1 Freeport, now Oregonia, where he attendedchool until fifteen years of age, when he entered his father s storeas a clerk and served in that capacity until 1860, when his fatherreturned to farming. Early in 1861 he and his father were associated in a store enterprise in what is now the town of Wellman,but six months later the stock was removed to Oregonia, where thisold business house has existed ever since, the father of Mr Sherwood retiring from the firm in1876. Mr. Sherwood was first ap-pointed postmaster at Oregonia in 1861 and served in that officeuntil the election of President Cleveland. He was again appointedpostmaster earlym the administration of President McKinley. Mr.Sherwood has served in other public capacities, for twenty-twoconsecutive years being treasurer of Washington township, forthirty-five years a member of the Oregonia school board, and fortwenty-two years station agent at Oregonia. Mr. Sherwood wasunited in marriage December 20, 1865,to Margaret A., daughter ofJoseph and Sally (Furims) Hollingsworth, of Warren county, whodied of typhoid fever, October 8. 1867, leaving one daughter, EvaLena bom November30. 1866. May 15, 1872, Mr. Sherwood mar-ried Sue H., daugh^r of Joel and Zeruah (French) Wood, of Smith-

    eld township Jefferson county Ohio. Seven children were bornof this marriage namely: Thomas Wood, born May 24, 1873,diedin^Q-7 Wy A 5^0 December 26. 1874;Stella, born August0, 18/7 died August 18, 1903; Jonathan F.. bora January 31. 1880;Zeruah Elizabeth born October 31, 1881,and Mary Emmaand JuliaAnna, born May 1, 1^4.^ Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood united with theUnited ^Brethren in Christ church when it was first organized atOregonia during the winter of 1872-3, were active in bringing aboutIts ^permanent establishment and in the building of the presentunity Chapel church building in 1873. With deep and abiding

Anna Ljffle Shurts. One of the old and prominent famili-ies of Warren county, whose members have long been highly honored m agncultural circles, as well as in positions of trust and re-sponsibility, is that bearing the name of Lytle, of which Mrs. Annauyt bburts is a worthy representat ive in the South Lebanon community. Ihe family was founded in this locality by Andrew Lytle,the of Mrs. Shurts. a native of Pennsylvania anda soldier ofthe Patriot armyduring the War of the Revolution, whocame here overland by foot and team in 1796.
