What an incredible year! As we enter into our fourth annual 1-Act Theatre Festival and another great year of performing arts, I am left reflecting on what we’ve just completed and the great future that lies ahead.

2010 was an exemplary year for SHIFT with the highest number of presentations we’ve ever worked on and the most diverse line-up of artistic programs. We began the year with a new fundraising event, our Masquerade Concert at Port Moody’s Old Orchard Hall. This was an entirely new kind of event for us, and although the first year was not as profitable as some previous fundraising efforts, we had a great time sharing some fantastic live music with SHIFT friends and family. Our 1-Act Festival was the largest it has ever been with ten fantastic shows in the line-up. We continued our busiest season yet with The Surreal Project 2 and presented a whole new experience for theatre goers. We took over Port Moody’s City Hall and created an entire world of surreal performance art. I am especially proud of our artistic team on this effort because we were able to showcase a wide variety of work including site-specific shows, surreal performance installations, movement-based theatre and more. I’m sure many of those

who were in attendance will remember the incredible aerial work in Suspended Reality, where we hung actors from the rafters of Inlet Theatre’s galleria. We finished the year with our first professional presentation, Purely Cabaret. This was especially important for me to be able to showcase this unique style of work in the Tri-Cities and take SHIFT to a whole new level.

With more diverse programming and a higher volume of presentations, we obviously take on more risk and I believe in many artistic ways, this work paid off. Although the society is in a more difficult financial position than in previous years (although we still managed to stay “in the black”!), I believe that 2011 will be a whole new chapter for us and we will continue to focus our efforts on work that is innovative, exciting and challenging.

Our third year was one filled with the highest number of SHIFT presentations we’ve ever had and therefore, the highest level of artistic and financial risk assumed by the organization. We were pleased with the handling of our presentations, though some of the consequences of the financial risk will need to be managed in 2011. We will focus on fundraising in the first half of the year to continue to pay down some debt incurred in late 2010.

A primary goal in 2010 was to maximize SHIFT’s season and create a wide variety of challenging work. SHIFT signature events were a great success this year, including the 1-Act Theatre Festival and the second installment of The Surreal Project 2. This event in particular became much more popular than in 2009 and featured an entirely new artistic format. Instead of the traditional theatre experience of coming to a theatre, seeing a show, enjoying a refreshment at intermission and completing act two, we decided to create an open, exploratory format where the audience was immersed in the surreal world and could interact with actors around the Port Moody City Hall. In addition to set shows in the Inlet Theatre (which were presented multiple times each night in different intervals), we created installations in the galleria, around the exterior of the building, in the underground parkade and second-floor meeting room. A highlight was “Suspended Reality” created by Jen Clune, which featured four actors doing aerial performance in the rafters of the galleria. This was a taxing, but very rewarding experience for our production team and took SHIFT to a whole new height. Special thanks to Coco Roberge and Sylvain Drolet for their hard work on making the aerial presentation a reality.

In the summer of 2010, we partnered with workingclass theatre in Vancouver to present PLAY, the wildly-popular 1-Act Festival presentation of Samuel Beckett’s work by director Lauren Holmes and two of workingclass’ featured short plays. The shows were presented in a full-week run at Granville Island’s Carousel Theatre and managed by the staff of workingclass. Although SHIFT did not play an integral role in the operation of the event, we were pleased for Lauren and the team at workingclass as they were able to showcase some exciting work to some capacity-audiences each night.

Purely Cabaret was a whole new experience for SHIFT. It was our first professional presentation, where we worked with paid artists to bring in a show from outside of the community. This was an extremely rewarding process and although the audiences were not as large as we had hoped, it took us outside of our comfort zone and created a new relationship with the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam – where we hope to produce or present work in the future. Many thanks to Lindsay Sutherland Boal and Kinza Tyrrell for not only bringing their incredible talent to the theatre, but for giving us the opportunity to bring their exciting work to the SHIFT line-up.

Although 2010 was a successful year artistically, we had to deal with a decrease in financial resources. Like many other arts organizations, we are continuing to see the devastating effects of the provincial budget cuts to the BC Gaming program and BC Arts Council. In the current political climate, we hope that some fresh infrastructure will restore funding levels and allow for artists and organizations like ours to thrive. We also saw the biggest staffing and Board change, with a number of key personnel moving on to pursue other commitments. In spring 2010, Adam Janusz began work as the Arts Director for CiTR 101.9FM in Vancouver and Zelda Coertze moved to Victoria to complete her BA in Applied Theatre. They will both continue to work with SHIFT on an on-going basis as Artistic Associates and their work will be featured in the upcoming 1-Act Festival in June 2011. A very special thank you to both Adam and Zelda for everything they have contributed in the past few years.

Our focus administratively this year will be to direct our efforts on Board development and creating a coherent team to execute our artistic goals. We will be “cutting through the red tape” to focus solely on our artistic mission and concentrate our efforts on what we do best – creating some of the most innovative, exciting and challenging performing arts in and around Metro Vancouver.

In our fourth year, we put the spotlight on making the 1-Act Festival the best it’s ever been. We also make fundraising a priority to re-build some previous SHIFT financial resources and create sustainability for our fifth year in 2012. This year will feature some of the most focused – and strongest – work we’ve ever presented.

February TBC Pub Night FundraiserWe’re starting off the 2011 calendar year with one of our signature Pub Night Fundraisers. More details coming soon.

May TBC Pub Night FundraiserWe continue fundraising to start off the 2011 calendar year with another of our signature Pub Nights. More details coming soon.

June 23-25 1-Act Theatre Festival ’10The 4th-annual 1-Act Festival continues with our juried format of plays over three days at the Inlet Theatre. Directors are applying (the deadline is January 21), pitch to our programming committee and decisions will be made based on our SHIFT Manifesto/Artistic Mandate by the 1-Act Festival programming committee (made up of SHIFT Board directors and advisors). This season, the festival will feature another innovative line-up of high quality, challenging theatre experiences.

Fall TBC Full-Length ProductionWe are working on producing the first SHIFT full-length presentation. We are exploring options for fall 2011 and depending on a number of considerations, we may postpone this presentation until 2012. More information will follow.
