Shout Out from Southern Middle Tracey Schledorn, School Counselor

The week of April 4th, all Southern Alamance Middle School seventh grade students visited the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill!

Students took part in UNC-CH’s “First Look” Program for upper elementary and middle school students. This program introduces school children to the concept of college – academics, arts, athletics, student life – and inspires and motivates students to set their goals on a college degree.

Students attended mini-classes led by current college students and shared their newfound expertise with their classmates. Small groups then toured the beautiful UNC-CH campus and feasted like royalty at the UNC Ram’s Head Dining Hall.

Upon return, students wrote notes of appreciation to UNCCH for the opportunity. We are College Bound!

Shout Out from Cummings High Rhonda Farmer Career Development Coordinator

Calculators got a workout on Friday, April 15 as CTE students enjoyed The Reality of Money experience sponsored by the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union. Students learned how to budget for housing, transportation, entertainment, communications, groceries, etc. based on their career and family situations. Each student received a paper outlining their education attainment level, job held, marital status, whether or not they had good or bad credit, then had to go to different booths to decide what they could afford and still have money to put into a savings account after subtracting out their monthly expenses.

Community volunteers, staff from the credit union and CHS staff members manned the booths and helped students decide on how to stay within their budget. Students got to see the relationship between high school graduation, post-secondary education attainment and career salaries in a very tangible way!

Some students also got a surprise with an unexpected expenses when picking a wild card that indicated something like: “Congratulations, you have just adopted a puppy from the animal shelter. Add $125 to your monthly budget.”

Shout Out for Elementary All County Chorus Andrew Pappert, Choral Teacher, Newlin Elementary

On Saturday, April 9th, 4th & 5th grade students from across Alamance County gathered at Graham High School for our 9th annual ABSS Elementary All County Chorus Concert. Families, staff and the community enjoyed the fabulous performance that these special honors level singers had worked so diligently preparing for them. The advanced nature of the 2 part song selections indeed made this year’s program uniquely challenging; yet, the students excelled and succeeded wonderfully! This year's conductor clinician was Guilford County middle school chorus teacher Theresa Kennedy. Thanks to her, our fine accompanist Laura Sam (retired ABSS music teacher), and to everyone involved in the organization and execution of this exciting annual event. Wow, next year is the 10th anniversary! Great Memories!

Isaiah is looking forward to the opportunity April 25th thru April 28th while Dan is also excited for his May 16ththrough 19th internship. Their interest in politics came to the forefront while in their respective Civics and Economics classes when both ran in their mock elections for president. The NC House Page Program is an opportunity for North Carolina high school students who are in good academic

standing, have principal approval, and exhibit a strong civic desire to better their communities and state. An essential aspect of being selected involves being sponsored by a current member of the NC General Assembly’s House of Representatives. Dan is sponsored by Representative Dennis Riddell (District 64) and Isaiah is sponsored by Representative Stephen Ross (District 63) We are very proud of these Eagles…and [maybe] future presidents!! Shout Out from Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher/Librarian Good Behavior Boogie! Last Friday the Seabees at Smith celebrated their good behavior with a special event. Those students who scored the required 80% of their dojo points were treated to a dance party during their specials time. Coach David Vaughn taught everyone the basic “step touch” move, and the students took matters into their own hands from there! It was amazing to see just how talented the Seabees from each grade level were. Even some of the specialty teachers got into the groove. This event was part of the PBIS celebration to promote expected behavior throughout the school.

Shout Out from Southern High HOSA Heather Silver, Health Science Educator

I am the HOSA advisor for the SAHS Chapter of HOSA. We sponsor 2 blood drives per school year for the CBCC (Community Blood Centers of the Carolinas). Last Friday students, staff, and parents donated blood that will go directly to patients in and around our community. We set a goal of 90 units and far surpassed that goal, collecting a total of 131! That was the second most units we have ever collected at Southern.

In November of 2013 137 units were collected. The HOSA officers and other club volunteers rallied during school lunches for 2 weeks to recruit donors! We hosted the blood drive in the auditorium.
