The year 2020 marks the beginning of a new decade and it’s a good occasion to take stock, set priorities and create a
road map for the next five years. Project ASTRA, which was undertaken in 2018, provides a framework for undertaking
such an exercise. It is therefore time to assess the progress on the goals that we had collectively set for ourselves and
also revamp plans based on experience and knowledge acquired in the last couple of years.
We must remain committed to the guiding principles of growth, trust, energized employees and delighted customers
that are embedded in our vision. Profitable Growth is essential to survival; otherwise the risk of being left behind is a
real one. Trust is fundamental to our company’s philosophy and is a way of life; it is part of the corporate logo punch
line. Energized employees form the bedrock of an efficient company and many studies have shown a high correlation
between employee satisfaction and corporate performance. Customers are the reason for our existence and therefore
it is imperative that they remain delighted by our service levels.
The values that we articulated during ASTRA are equally important, as they hold true during ups and down. Integrity
is crucial in our dealings within the company, with our stakeholders and the society around us. Agility will ensure
we complete projects on time, we respond to customer needs with a sense of urgency and keep operating costs
under control. As is often said, customer is the king. Therefore, we must be open to feedback and build a long
lasting relationship with our customers so that it is a win win for all. Given the complexity of business tasks, they can
be successfully accomplished only through teamwork. A collaborative and empathetic work culture will bring out
the best from a team. Newness must be internalized in our thinking and in all our actions, without diluting financial
prudence and risk management.
To ensure that our businesses continue to grow and remain competitive the company is investing heavily in upgrading
and creating new facilities. During the five years from 2017 to 2021, a capital investment of Rs 4200 Crs is being
undertaken. This has been possible due to a strong balance sheet, with our various businesses delivering satisfactory
performance. We must aim to be ahead of the curve in technology, processes, and service levels. In parallel, safety,
health and environment has to be given top most priority.
Finally, each business and function must look at things differently and with an open mind. The endeavour is to achieve
a leadership position in all aspects, be it profitability, efficiencies, technology, customer satisfactions, costs and so on.
With the first issue of Shriram Newsletter, we would like to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year,
prosperity and good health.

Water conservation structure constructed in Dolaha, Jhalawar
COVER STORYBALANCING WATER DEMAND AND SUPPLY
In keeping with its belief that “Every Drop Counts,”
DCM Shriram supported Rajasthan’s “Mukhya Mantri
Jal Swawlamban Abhiyan” (MJSA) programme by
constructing water conservation structures in districts
of Jhalawar and Kota and also worked towards
enhancement of agri productivity in that area through
its agri-skilling program, ‘Jeetega Kisaan’.
DCM Shriram first focused on constructing check dams
on streams/impounding runoffs to create surface water
storage structures. The water from these structures is
used directly in irrigation and it also percolates down,
leading to increased groundwater levels thereby
recharging wells/tube-wells. The Company recharged
more than 100 wells across 18 villages through
construction of anicuts, MST and pond renovation.
The second programme, layered on it, is a unique
agriculture skilling project called ‘Jeetega Kisaan’
which is being implemented in Kota and Jhalawar. It
aims to increase farmers income by training them to
adopt modern techniques, enhance productivity and
create market linkages. Encouraged by the results
of improved agricultural practices in demo fields, the
Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) are motivated to follow
them. In three clusters of Kota district, 46 groups have
been formed with almost 900 farmers participating in
the programme.
Over the last three years, the water storage capacity
has increased to 6.4 Lac cubic metres and improved
farming practices have benefitted 12,650 people living
in 23 villages. The water availability improved along
with rise in the water table, enabling farmers to cultivate
two crops in a year as against single crop cultivation
before intervention. Improved agronomic practices,
water management and better linkage to markets have
together delivered holistic socio-economic growth.
The adoption of vegetable cultivation was a key aim of
the Jeetega Kisaan project in Jhalawar the area under
pulses and vegetable cultivation increased, so did the
income by more than 150% in three years.
In UP’s Hardoi and Lakhimpur, the sugar units run a
unique initiative ‘Meetha Sona’ for sugarcane farmers
based on the key principles of Suitability, Scalability
and Sustainability. It works by catalysing behaviour
change among two lakh farmers, working across 1.65
lakh hectare of farmland in the catchment area of DCM
Shriram’s four sugar mills in the state.

This community outreach programme directly benefits
the livelihood of sugarcane farmers who are trained on
productivity enhancement and large-scale conservation
of water resources. Water management is one of the
key components of this programme and interventions
are basically focused on two fronts - supply side and
demand side.
On the demand front, the company works with the
farmers for adoption of Good Agricultural Practices,
resulting in water use efficiency. The techniques such as
trash mulching, laser levelling, furrow and drip irrigation
have led to increase in yields. This has led to a saving
of 275 billion litres of water is the past three years. On
the supply side front, the focus in on increasing water
availability and accessibility in the region. The Company
has built one check dam, converted 18 disused dug
wells into recharge wells and rejuvenated 68 ponds by
desilting in Hardoi and Lakhimpur, the water storage
capacity has increased to 3.6 million cubic metres
through our supply initiatives.

The journey of an enthusiastic 50-year-old Kamla Bai from village Kotdi in Jhalawar, is a classic case of women empowerment in the male dominated farming world. “I come from a traditional farming family. My husband passed away when I was 30. At that time, I had eight bighas of land and earned Rs 1 lakh per annum. I joined the project in 2017 and saw an increase in yield of soyabean. My son had to discontinue his studies after standard 8, but my daughter studied till graduation. Now, I grow corn, vegetables and fruits. My income is Rs 5 lakh per annum. I have taken eight bighas more on lease,” she says.
Another happy soul is sprightly 62-year-old Bhagu Lal in Sadhinawan village, district Hardoi. Since 1984, he has been breeding and selling fish. He is in high spirits as the pond he has taken on lease for 10 years from the gram panchayat is full of water. “The Company desilted, broadened and deepened the pond. This helps in ground water recharge also,” he says.
