    Product Overview

The SIB108 sensor interface board allows up to eight Hamamatsu S10362-33-50C multi-pixel photon counters (MPPCs) to easily interface to a Vertilon PhotoniQ multichannel data acquisition system (DAQ). The MPPC devices are inserted into remote mounting boards where their anode and cathode signals are carried on a special purpose cable assembly to the SIB108. Each MPPC is biased through its anode connection by one of the eight on-board adjustable high voltage bias supplies. These supplies are conveniently enabled and configured through the PhotoniQ graphical user interface. Gain matching between the arrays is done by trimming each device’s bias voltage in the GUI. The MPPC devices’ cathode signals are split into two paths on the SIB108 — the charge signal path and the discriminator path. The charge signal path is routed to a sensor interface board (SIB) connector that conforms to Vertilon’s standard, low-noise, multi-channel, cable interconnection system. The SIB connector mates to a micro-coaxial cable assembly that connects the eight device outputs to the PhotoniQ which is used to integrate the charge (energy) signal from each MPPC. The discriminator path includes a variable gain pre-amplifier and an adjustable threshold leading edge discriminator. Full control over the discriminator gain and threshold is performed through the PhotoniQ GUI which also allows the user to enter a logic function that generates a trigger signal based on some combination of the eight discriminator outputs. This trigger signal is available as an output from the SIB108 and is typically connected to the trigger input on the PhotoniQ data acquisition system where it is used to initiate the collection of the energy signals from the MPPCs connected to the DAQ system’s inputs. The full functionality and operation of the SIB108 is conveniently controlled through the PhotoniQ’s graphical user interface. Intelligent software in the PhotoniQ constantly monitors the status of its SIB connectors to determine the type of sensor interface board attached to them. Once recognized, a dialog box specific to the recognized SIB is made available in the GUI through which the user has complete control over its operation.

The various functions on the SIB108 are described in greater detail on the following pages. When necessary, refer to the functional block diagram shown in Figure 1 below.

Typical Setup A typical eight channel setup using Hamamatsu S10362-33-50C multi-pixel photon counters and a SIB108 is shown below. Each device is inserted in the MPPC mounting board which in turn is connected to the SIB108 through a specialized cable assembly. Two cable assemblies are required — one for channels 1 through 4 and the other for channels 5 through 8. The eight outputs from the MPPC devices are routed on the SIB108 to the SIB connector that connects to a Vertilon PhotoniQ multichannel data acquisition system. The figure shows a 64 channel system like the IQSP482 or IQSP582 although a 32 channel system could also be used. The discriminator logic produces a trigger to the PhotoniQ whenever an event detected by the eight MPPCs meets the trigger function criteria. The energy level threshold for the event is set by the user through the PhotoniQ graphical user interface. Charge signals from the eight devices are acquired by the PhotoniQ for each trigger produced by the SIB108. Digitized output data from the PhotoniQ is sent through a USB 2.0 connection to a PC for display, logging, or real time processing.

Hamamatsu S10362 MPPC Mounting Board The SIB108 supports up to eight Hamamatsu S10362-50-33C multi-pixel photon counter devices — each mounted on an MPPC mounting board. To attach the device, the MPPC is inserted into the two socket pins on the mounting board. Care should be taken to avoid bending the device pins when inserting the MPPC into the socket pins. Because the socket pins extend above the board, a small plastic spacer should be used between the MPPC and the surface of the PCB.

Detector Signal Chain The eight cathode signals from the individual Hamamatsu S10362 MPPCs are routed directly on the SIB108 to the SIB connector. These signals map to channels 1 through 8 of a Vertilon PhotoniQ charge integrating data acquisition system. The PhotoniQ utilizes DC-coupled high speed transimpedance amplifiers that maintain a DC bias voltage of +0.250 volts on each of its inputs. Because the output signal from the S10362 device is derived from its cathode, the current polarity to the PhotoniQ preamplifier is out of its input. For this reason, the Input Polarity under the Data Configuration menu in the PhotoniQ GUI should be set to the default value which is positive. See the PhotoniQ user’s manual for more details. The figure below shows the signal chain from the S10362 MPPC to the PhotoniQ DAQ system.

High Voltage Bias Supplies Eight high voltage bias supplies are available on the SIB108 — one for each MPPC device. The supplies are configured using the dialog box available through the PhotoniQ GUI shown below. They are individually adjusted and enabled using the check boxes for each supply. Alternatively, they can be slaved together by checking the “Master Control” check box. The -100V power source must be connected to the SIB108 to use the on-board bias supplies. This source comes from the high voltage output from the PhotoniQ. Under normal operation it should be set to -85V in the PhotoniQ front panel graphical user interface.

Discriminator Each channel has a leading edge discriminator in its signal path. The discriminator has two user-selectable gain settings (low and high) as well as a user programmable energy threshold. A logic signal is generated by the discriminator when a current pulse on its input exceeds the threshold. The SIB108 GUI dialog box allows the user to set the gain and the threshold for each channel. The threshold can be set between 0 and 100% where 100% is equal to the maximum possible signal amplitude in the discriminator channel. Figure 5 shows the operation of the leading edge discriminator. A negative-going current pulse into its preamplifier results in a negative-going pulse on its output. This pulse is compared to a threshold that is adjusted using the SIB108 dialog box in the PhotoniQ GUI. A logic high is generated after a small delay (td) from when the pulse first crosses the threshold, Vth. The discriminator switches back to a logic low when the pulse crosses the threshold from the opposite direction as it returns back to the baseline level.

Trigger Logic Function Three logic functions are available to the user for the generation of the trigger signal. The first function is the channel pairing function. A trigger signal is created by the SIB108 whenever a logic high from the discriminators is detected on a pair of channels. The pairs are preset such that channels 1 and 2, channels 3 and 4, channels 5 and 6, and channels 7 and 8, constitute the trigger pairs. A simultaneous input pulse detected on any of these channel pairs results in a trigger output from the board. The two other logic functions are the channel “and” and channel “or” functions. With the “and” function, a trigger is generated only when the discriminators from all selected channels in the function detect a pulse. Any combination of channels can be selected for the “and” function. Similarly, the “or” logic function creates a trigger signal if any one of the discriminators from the selected channels detects a pulse. The output trigger polarity from the SIB108 can be set to either positive or negative in the PhotoniQ GUI.

Trigger Status LEDs There are four trigger status LEDs on the SIB108 — each one corresponding to a pair of channels. An LED blinks red to indicate if the discriminators associated with its channel pair detect an incoming energy pulse. The LED flashes green if the trigger logic conditions are met and a trigger output is generated. For stray light sensitive installations, the LEDs can be disabled in the PhotoniQ graphical user interface.
