CANCER SERVICES OF NORTHEAST INDIANA ♦ DECEMBER 2017 ♦ VOL 74 ♦ ISSUE 4
We all want to do our best to live a full life, to be healthy and to getstronger after any sort of setback. But how do we know when to allowourselves to rest and when to push through? It’s not always easy to makethis decision. Here are some of the things that work for me:
Never ignore painPain is an indication that we need to stop and take notice. Sometimes
pain can be mild, and movement actually helps in causing the discomfort todissipate. However, in general, if something really hurts, or gets worse asyou move, you should stop.
Test the watersOn the days that I feel particularly
tired, I often make a little deal withmyself to test and see if I really need therest as much as I sometimes feel like Ido. For instance, instead of cleaning thewhole house in one day, I give myself
permission to only do the dusting then rest and see how I feel. Or I mighttell myself that I only have to do 5 minutes on the treadmill instead of the30 minutes I normally try to fit in my day. If I am truly in need of rest, Imight struggle to make the 5 minutes. Often, I find that I can make the full30 and then some. If I at least try, I know my limitations and honor them.
Be easy with yourselfWe all have days when we need rest, and we need to honor that
sometimes. I used to constantly push and try to do too much. I thought thatresting would make me feel lazy and weak. But one of the gifts of my owncancer diagnosis was learning that rest is okay and necessary sometimes. So, now I look at resting in a positive light. I view it as an important part ofmy day just as I view brushing my teeth or working out. When we affirmthat the rest is necessary to our health, it becomes even more valuable forhealing. So allow yourself to slow down, and be kind to yourself in yourself-talk when you do.
Movement makes us strongerWhile it is good to slow down when we need it, movement does make
us stronger and prevents residual ailments like pneumonia and blood clots. It also helps us maintain and increase strength. Although pushing too hardmay not feel good, it’s good to do what we can. So, if your body is feelingweak, just try to do what you can periodically, such as sitting on the bedsideand marching in place, taking a walk no matter how far, doing sit to standsfrom the bed or chair or whatever movement you know you can safely do.Try to schedule 5 to 10 minutes (or more if you’re able) a few times a day tojust move in any way you are able.
“...So allow yourself to slow down, and be kind to yourself... ”
The bottom line is that both rest and movement areimportant for healing. The key is to find the balance that isright for you. Listen to your body, push a bit to test thewaters, but never ignore true pain. Always be kind toyourself with your thoughts and attitude. Good health is ajourney and every day may feel a little different. But we canall make it there when we practice patience with ourselves.

IN HONOR OF
IN MEMORY OF
Cancer Services is entirely supported by charitable contributions. Some support comes from local foundations, but it is the individual donors who make the mostimpact - sending regular checks, buying tickets to fundraising events, and walking to raise money with friends. These gifts come with “no strings attached,” whichmeans we are able to fund innovative new programming and balance resources so that people can get what they need when they need it.
When you read this list of amazing donors and wonder if your gift matters, please know that the organization wouldn’t exist without it.
MEMORIALS & HONORARIUMS Thanks to all who gave to Cancer Services between September 26, 2017 and November 30, 2017.
