Thursday, 4:11 a.m.When I have more

time off work, I’ll be glad to write a letter. This is Monica. It’s a shame that someone got killed off of Stewart Street, and I understand why. I walk home every night after work. Gulf Power has 11 lights out there on Stewart Street. The cops sit there at King Middle School and I counted five cars the other night walking home speeding.

The speed limit is only 45 mph. And if you live where I live, everyone

speeds in Skyline. Can you tell me why the cops don’t do anything or Gulf Power doesn’t put up lights? Because either they, or the City of Milton will get sued. Thank you.

Wednesday, 7:45 p.m.Yes, this is George. I

just saw Hardees’ new commercial on television. It’s very distasteful, embarrassing and just out of place. I was wondering if Hardees is promoting hamburgers or sex. Anybody that has to stoop so low and have the morals they reflect in these disgusting dirty commercials can’t expect me, or my family to ever eat at any of their Hardees locations ever again.

Wednesday, 5:38 a.m.Smells like an

ammonia leak coming

from Taminco and the Floridatown area. Loud noises around 8 p.m. last night. Have been smelling that fishy ammonia smell all night.

Tuesday, 6:35 p.m.Does Santa Rosa

have any plans to rebuild the oldest schools in our county? The News Journal ran a story about replacing Escambia’s two oldest schools because of their poor condition. We have several even older buildings that are in really bad shape. Students in newer classrooms have a number of advantages over those in old rooms.

monday, 1:52 p.m.This is Kenneth. I’m

calling about Obama for president, and the price of gas. I hope the people remember that four years ago when he was running

for office; he then said he desired the $5 a gallon of gasoline to reduce the pollution and reduce the amount of miles that people were driving. Of course this doesn’t apply to Air Force One I’m quite sure.

However, he said there’s no silver bullet to lower the price of gas. But I think he has found the silver bullet to raise the price of gas. And I think his silver bullet is the Environmental Protection Agency. They have done everything they can under his guidance to slow the flow of oil in the United States by stopping drilling, stopping the pipelines, and stopping the drilling in the Gulf. I think the people really need to look at this situation. I think we can have $2 a gallon gasoline if Obama had not stepped in with the EPA. Thank you.

From Staff Reports

A Milton man’s car ended up on its roof Mon-day afternoon on U.S. 90 as a result of a two-car collision.

According to the Flor-ida Highway Patrol, John Gibson, 18 of Milton, was westbound on U.S. 90, as was Timothy Leonard, 36, of Pensacola. Gibson went

to change lanes and struck Leonard’s truck in the right front. The contact forced Gibson’s car to slide sideways until it struck a curbed median and over-turned onto its roof.

Gibson sustained minor injuries, and Leonard was not injured in the accident. The Florida Highway Pa-trol charged Gibson with improper change of lanes.

Musician Al Martin has seen many barriers fall since he first started learning music at the age of 12.

Martin, 61, has been earning his living through music all his life by playing piano and working for Forbes Music Co. in Pensacola.

“Being a piano player has allowed me to experience so much,” said Martin, who was the piano player for more than 20 years at the former Ramada Inn on Scenic Highway in Pensacola. “When people hear music, they are not that selective of who is playing it as long as the music is good.”

Today, Martin plays piano throughout the area, with appearances at Ragtime in Pensacola as well as the Gregory Street Community Center in Pensacola on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

But for Martin, it hasn’t always been that easy. Not when he played piano behind late country music artist Freddy Fender at the Shriner’s Temple on Nine Mile Road, or when he started playing at the Ramada Inn.

“When I went for my

first night at the Ramada Inn, a regular patron came up and asked me, ‘Who are you?’ ” I told them I was the piano player and

they told me I wouldn’t last that long. It was a good experience for me as I played there for 20 years, until 2007.”

Martin tries to find the best in every situation, and he has seen a lot since he first started taking music lessons at the age of 12.

“I was one of three black children who were taking piano lessons, and I had to go on Saturday afternoon to Emily Aldreman’s home between 4:30 and 5 p.m. so no one would know she was teaching black children,” Martin said. “She was on track to become a concert pianist when she started teaching because she fell from grace with her family.

“Back then, there was a strong class system, and there was a group of people you were not allowed to associate with. So back then, there were issues all over the place, not just race.”

Martin recalls what happened when the laws changed in 1967. He recalls the black entrance to the Saenger Theater and other signs of segregation.

“I remember What-A-Burger had a ‘white only’ sign back then,” Martin said. “They just painted over the sign instead of replacing it or taking it down. “They obeyed the law, but the sentiment was still there.”

That sentiment seemed to still be in

existence when the former Wedgewood High School student went to study music at Pensacola State College, which was then Pensacola Junior College.

“I went to take the PJC entrance exam in the fall of 1968, and the last question was to write the first eight measures of Dixie,” Martin recalled. “I was kind of taken aback a bit, but thankfully, I had the skill to do it and I did it.”

Though music has helped Martin break barriers, he knows there is still work to be done.

“Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, and some are still resistant to change, despite the laws being passed,” Martin said. “At times things might not be that obvious, but if you think of anything, there is a preference. It just doesn’t apply strictly to race, even though race can be a factor.

“People used to be wiser, but they are not as

wise now. Lawsuits cost them money, but it boils down to the fact if you have the patience to follow through and stay the course. That is how the system works.”

Martin was the only one of five children in his family to follow his musical aspirations.

“I chose to follow my music dream against the advice of my family,” Martin said. “Back when I was growing up, musicians had a reputation of being less than trustworthy.

“Despite going against my parents’ wishes, it has been a very enlightening experience for me.”

Martin cites Clayton “Peg Leg” Bates as an inspiration. Bates lost his leg in an accident at age 12, but despite having a peg leg, became an accomplished tap dancer. Like him, no matter what barriers Martin encounters, he tries to look at it with a smile and overcome.

Retired Milton businessman Garnett Breeding is donating a prize Staghorn Fern to the Milton Garden Club

Breeding, who was inspired many years ago by the Staghorn Ferns in greenhouses at the Hearst Castle in North Carolina and decided he could grow one just as magnificent, is donating his grandfather fern to the Milton Garden Club for an opportunity drawing on May 24.

For almost a quarter of a century, friends and neighbors have admired the gigantic fern, which hands in an oak tree in his yard during warm weather and has its own place in the warm garage in the winter.

Last summer Breeding added lights for nighttime viewing.

Now that he has raised another Staghorn Ferm almost as big to take its place he decided to donate the grandfather fern to the Milton Garden Club.

Tickets for the fern are $5 each or three for $10 and it will be awarded to one lucky ticket holder at 2 p.m. on May 24.

Tickets will be available at the Garden Center during the Morning Glory Luck of the Irish on March 9, at the Spring Festival of Flowers at Pensacola State College in Milton April 13 –15 and will be sold at the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs District 1 meeting May 24.

For more information on getting tickets or about the Milton Garden Club Activities call 623-9034.

Rick Santorum’s speech at the Detroit Economic Club stirred a bit of controversy when he said: “I’m not about equality of result when it comes to income inequality. There is income inequality in America. There always has been, and hopefully — and I do say that — there always will be.” That kind of statement, though having merit, should not be made to people who have little or no understanding. Let’s look at inequality.

Kay S. Hymowitz’s article “Why the Gender Gap Won’t Go Away. Ever,” in City Journal (Summer 2011), shows that female doctors earn only 64 percent of the income that male doctors earn. What should be done about that? It turns out that only 16 percent of surgeons are women but 50 percent of pediatricians are women. Even though surgeons have many more years of education and training than do pediatricians, should Congress equalize their salaries or make pediatricians become surgeons?

Wage inequality is everywhere. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Asian men and women earn more than white men and women. Female cafeteria attendants earn more than their male counterparts. Females who are younger than 30 and have never been married earn salaries 8 percent higher than males of the same description. Among women who graduated from college during 1992-93, by 2003 more than one-fi fth were no longer in the workforce and another 17 percent were working part-time. That’s to be compared with only 2 percent of men in either category. Hymowitz cites several studies showing signifi cant career choice and lifestyle differences between men and women that result in income inequality.

There are other inequalities that ought to be addressed. With all of the excitement about New York Knick Jeremy Lin’s rising stardom, nobody questions league domination by blacks, who are a mere 13 percent of our population but constitute 80 percent of NBA players and are the highest-paid ones. It’s not much better in the NFL, with blacks being 65 percent of its players. Colleges have made diversity their primary calling, but watch any

basketball game and you’d be hard-put to fi nd white players in roles other than bench warming. Worse than that, Japanese, Chinese and American Indian players aren’t even recruited for bench warming.

There’s inequality in most jobs. According to 2010 BLS data, the following jobs contain 1 percent female workers or less: boilermaking, brickmasonry, stonemasonry, septic tank servicing, sewer pipe cleaning and working with reinforcing iron and rebar. Maybe the reason female workers aren’t in these occupations is that too many are in other occupations. Females are 97 percent of preschool and kindergarten teachers, 80 percent of social workers, 82 percent of librarians and 92 percent of dietitians and nutritionists and registered nurses.

Anyone with one ounce of brains can see the problem and solution. Congress has permitted — and even fostered — a misallocation of people by race, sex and ethnicity. Courts have consistently concluded that “gross” disparities are probative of a pattern and practice of discrimination. So what to do? One remedy that Congress might consider is to require females, who are overrepresented in fi elds such as preschool and kindergarten teaching, to become boilermakers and brickmasons and mandate that male boilermakers and brickmasons become preschool and kindergarten teachers until both of their percentages are equal to their percentages in the population. You say, “Williams, that would be totalitarianism!” But if Americans accept that Congress can make us buy health insurance whether we want to or not, how much more totalitarian would it be for Congress to allocate jobs in the name of social equality and the good of our nation?

Nobel laureate Milton Friedman said: “A society that puts equality before freedom will get neither. A society that puts freedom before equality will get a high degree of both.” Equality before the general rules of law is the only kind of equality conducive to liberty that can be secured without destroying liberty.

Walter E. Williams is a professor of economics at George Mason University.

I want my Republic back, NOW!I am extremely

concerned about the actions of our President. Even though I voted for McCain, I was proud that the people elected our fi rst black President. Hope and change soon became a hard left towards Socialism and now borders on a Dictatorial take-over of our freedoms, guaranteed by our Bill of Rights.

As Ben Franklin departed Independence Hall, a fellow citizen asked Franklin what kind of a government did you give us? Franklin replied, “A Republic, I hope you can keep it!”

Why are the middle-class being so quiet? Where is the Invisible Army of Veterans who has kept us free, as in

freedom? Where are the Conservatives, Independents, Blue Dog Democrats and Congressmen? Where is the Tea Party?

It is time to demand IMPEACHMENT! I want my Republic back, Mr. Franklin. This President is promoting class warfare and racial problems, excessive money problems

and spending us out of house and home. He is a Chicago Community/Union organizer spending us into BANKRUPTCY. He in incompetent! He is making Nixon, Carter and Clinton candidates for sainthood.

I want my Republic back … NOW!

MINORITY VIEWPOINTWalter Williams

I am the fi rst to admit I am a poor example of good eating habits, but we, as a nation, have to start somewhere.

I simply will not allow the government to tell me how to spend my money, but we are not talking about my money, are we?

We are talking about our collective tax dollars being used to help someone who needs assistance.

I know I might sound crazy, but our government is already trying to introduce healthier eating habits.

If you don’t believe, me just look at the awards received by 16 of our school lunchrooms.

They earned these honors by introducing and meeting new governmental standards when it comes to the lunches offered to children.

All Uncle Sam is doing by wanting to ban junk food purchases with EBT cards is move recipients of assistance to better eating habits. Better eating habits should lead to better health, which could end up saving taxpayers even more money.

Shoot, maybe they should also fi nd a way to

offer these folks cooking lessons. We all know taking a bag of rice or dried beans and a

cut of meat to make a meal is much better than sitting on the couch and sticking your hand into a bag of Doritos, cookies or candy.

While you might think junk food is cheaper, but for some it is not the cost, but the effort of cooking.

A can of soup or that famous heat-and-eat Italian Chef Boyardee is better than cookies, but it does take some effort to open the can and heat it on the stove.

As a nation obsessed with obesity, we have started a trend towards healthier eating in our schools. Santa Rosa County is leading the pack.

Recently, our school lunchrooms were honored for meeting federal nutrition standards.

All the government is trying to do is to make sure the dollars being sent for state assistance are being spent to follow the same guidelines.

Remember Mat, those receiving EBT cards are also receiving some form health care assistance. If a person receiving an EBT card eats better, then maybe they will have fewer health issues.

That would mean another reduction in government expenditures.

Mat, with as much as I see you eat here at work, I understand your concern about the attack on junk food.

When you look at the bigger picture, the card was not intended to purchase Doritos, cookies and candy, but to help those have a decent meal.

What shocks me most is that you and others object to this but are doing nothing to solve the problem.

Mat, many people like you have forgotten a lesson I was taught at a young age.

Give a man a fi sh and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fi sh and you feed him for life.

Mat, this is also a matter of healthBill, it’s one thing for the government to outlaw

people buying beer and cigarettes with their EBT cards, but a pack of chips and a bag of cookies? Come on.

Who, wants to eat carrots and chicken and skip the ice cream?

First, the government regulates how much tax is on our cigarettes and beer. Now it wants to take away all the luxuries from the poor. I don’t want to

sound like a whiny teenager Bill, but it’s obvious this is not a good decision. There are better things the government can do than regulate what people can and cannot eat.

This whole idea is torture. Now people with EBT cards will have to go into grocery stores and revamp their entire grocery list.

I mean, how much are they talking about outlawing?

How sweet can a cereal be before it is deemed “candy?”

What if someone can’t drink milk? I guess soda would be out.

Bill, I see what the government is trying to do. They look at people who obviously don’t watch what they eat and they turn that on the poor in this country.

Yes, while it upsets me to see that some people like to “abuse the system,” I also like to see people actually have some freedoms instead of being confined to developing healthy eating habits.

The worst part is Bill, healthier stuff is always more expensive. Why do you think I’m also eating Top Ramen and hot dogs? Probably one of the two worst things to eat, but I eat them because they are cheap. Because the government wants to do this to EBT cardholders, they are taking away their money.

You can buy a lot more sugary substances with $200 a month in food stamps. That’s why our country is the way it is.

People make fun of Americans because of how obese we are. Because of this, the government feels that those receiving aid should at least look the part. Give me a break. These people need government aid to fill their stomachs, not so they can look like an anorexic vegetarian.

The government needs to stop munching on M&M’s and wake up.

An apple a day? I’ll take the Doritos

Church DIRECTORY

By the Rev. William W. Stoudenmire

Trinity by the Fields

The Lenten season is here. That means a time for remembering the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, a time for fasting and prayer for each of us as we await the resurrection of Jesus — Easter! It’s a time of expressing sorrow for sins that brought about the death of Jesus.

At Trinity by the Fields, we observe Lent, and invite you to come and worship with us. Do you hunger for a deeper spiritual relationship with our Lord than what you are getting now? Do you feel that “something” is missing from your present worship experience?

We are a relatively new Anglican church. We invite you to come

and be a part of living the Good News of Jesus in our community, in the Anglican tradition.

Yes, we are Anglican. That means we are liturgical, we following the Book of Common Prayer as our order of service. But mostly we are about proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not the “feel-good” culture.

Please come. Bring your family and experience the ancient-future tradition that is spreading across the world. We are at 4980 W. Spencer Field Road in Pace. Our worship time is at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning. You can contact us at 995-7055 or at [email protected].

Visit our webpage at www.trinitybythefields.com

The peace of the Lord be with you!

panied the victim on May 1 both told deputies Forester provided them with alcohol and that he was acting “fl irtatious” around the victim, the report stated.

A witness said after the in-cident, the victim returned to Forester’s home the next day and rode around with the him in his car during the day.

An offi cer later interviewed the victim again about going to Forester’s house the day after the incident, and she admit-ted she went back the next day and that while she was riding around in the car with Forester, he rubbed her leg, but they did not kiss or do anything sexually.

When a deputy interviewed

Forester on May 5, the Pace man said he did not purchase alcohol for the juveniles but that he drank beer and the ju-veniles drank “four-loco” while they were at his house. He also said he dropped his children off at his parents’ house before he went back home with the juveniles.

Forester admitted to rubbing the victim’s legs and kissing her but denied having sexual inter-course with her.

When Forester was asked about what happened when he was left alone with the teen in-side of his trailer, he said the other two juveniles were out-side and that he only went into his bedroom to get his keys and wallet before leaving.

SEX CRIME from page A1 BUS from page A1her mother chasing after Aar-on’s bus.

“She is now terrifi ed of buses because she saw what happened that day,” Davis said. “She said ‘I don’t ever want to ride a bus.’”

Since the incident, Davis has transported her children to and from their schools and even to and from fi eld trips out of fear.

“I just don’t want this to hap-pen again,” she said. “This isn’t a money issue. This sort of thing happens all the time, and I just want it to stop.”

After the incident, parents from around the South have contacted Davis about similar incidents that happened to their children — some fatal.

“I talked with someone who had a little boy up in Louisi-

ana, and he was drug by a bus and suffered head injuries and was later killed,” Davis said. Lederion Miller, 6, was killed in March 2011 in Milton, La., after being caught in a school bus door and dragged alongside for 20 feet.

She also said she spoke with someone whose 4-year-old daughter who was dragged by a bus and killed in Alabama.

She said the school district and Durham contacted her once after the incident and told her the driver would be undergoing safety training courses again but hasn’t heard anything since.

“They haven’t told me any-thing about what’s going on,” Davis said. “I was told by my lawyer not to contact them.”

According to a statement re-leased shortly after the incident by Kristin Sattayatam, market-ing manager for Durham, the bus service is still conducting a full investigation, and the driver is on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

Davis said her lawyer has sent out letters threatening a lawsuit and plans on meeting with the school district next month.

“I will never allow my kids on a bus ever again,” Davis said. “This driver was being careless, and he was worried about the kids on the bus and not the ones getting off of the bus.

“If my son would have lost his life that day, I would not have been able to cope with it.”

On Monday, Santa Rosa County depu-ties arrested a Milton man in connection with a stabbing that occurred Sunday at a Milton restaurant.

Demetrius Rashad Mason, 37, has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Mason, who had a war-rant out for his arrest fol-lowing the incident, was found in a vehicle in front of his residence on Cross-winds Drive in Milton on Monday and remains lodged in the Santa Rosa

County Jail without bond.On Sunday afternoon, Santa Rosa Coun-

ty deputies answered a call to the Santa Rosa Medical Center regarding a cutting/stabbing complaint.

According to a press release, Marva Willingham, 40, of Milton, was one of the victims. Willingham told deputies she ob-served a confrontation between two men outside the Outer Limits Restaurant.

She told deputies Mason was on top of Demarquis Perkins, 27, of Pace. Willingham said as she approached the altercation, she was stabbed in the abdomen by Mason.

Perkins suffered a sliced lower lip, a cut below the eye and a stab wound to his fore-arm, according to the report.

Haines said none of the injuries was life-threatening and that the altercation started because Mason thought Perkins had said something inappropriate about a female.

Sgt. Scott Haines said Willingham and Perkins identifi ed Mason as their assailant.

Milton woman charged in 2 attacks

In a separate incident, a Milton woman was arrested Sunday in connection with two separate attacks in Pensacola.

Amanda Atkins, 33 of Milton, was ar-rested and charged with burglary with as-sault or battery, battery on a person over 65 years of age, criminal mischief and battery.

She remains lodged in the Escambia County Jail on a bond of $108,000.

According to the Es-cambia County Sheriff ’s Offi ce, Atkins entered the home of Bessie Davis on Fairview Drive at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday.

Davis told offi cers she heard someone banging

on her front door, and when she opened the door Atkins pushed her way into the home and struck her in the face.

According to the report, Atkins then left Davis’ home in a silver truck, and deputies were advised of a woman hitting cars with her truck on Kearney Drive in Pensacola.

Atkins is said to have entered another home and struck Lisa Gipson before exit-ing the home and jumping on the hood of another car.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they placed Atkins under arrest.

Pace man charged in stabbing at restaurant

he was doing it in a much safer fashion.”Deputies found the following items in-

side the storage shed: two one-pot cook jugs, which are vessels used to combine pseudo-ephedrine, ammonia nitrate fer-tilizer, lithium metal and a solvent used in the clandestine manufacturing of meth-amphetamine; fi ve hydrogen chloride gas generators; one mason jar with a bi-layer liquid, which Stanley said was acetone he used to clean his methamphetamine; Coleman fuel; ammonia nitrate fertilizer; drain cleaner; numerous empty mason jars; along with a mason jar that con-tained a gas-like substance Stanley said was homemade napalm.

Also in the shed was a vent hood used to exhaust fumes, which Stanley said he used in the process of gassing out the methamphetamine. Additionally, 117 grams of methamphetamine oil was lo-cated inside the shed.

Haines describe the level of meth-amphetamine produced by Stanley as that along the lines of the drug Adderall, which is used to treat attention defi cit hy-peractivity disorder and narcolepsy.

“Apparently Stanley is some sort of scientist, and we found some documen-tation to prove that point,” Haines said. “We are not disclosing his workplace at this time.”

In addition to the meth and napalm, of-fi cers discovered an arsenal of weapons that included a Mini-14, an H&K 9 mm, a .44-caliber, as well as other assorted

weapons and ammunition.Haines said Stanley had no explana-

tion of what the napalm was for.Haines indicated the arsenal of weap-

ons is not illegal but that it was some-thing of interest found during the search of the home.

Santa Rosa County narcotics of-fi cers remained at the scene as they were awaiting word from the State Fire Marshall’s Offi ce or the EOD at Eglin Air Force concerning the napalm and how to dispose of it.

When Stanley was taken into custody, offi cers found a plastic bag and a glass vial in his left front pocket that contained methamphetamine.

Haines said after being read his Mi-randa Rights, Stanley cooperated with narcotics offi cers and explained he was making methamphetamine to help medi-cate himself.

Stanley’s bond was set at $45,000, which he posted shortly after 10 p.m.

Cortland Finnegan awaits contract news

By Bill [email protected]

Former Milton standout and NFL corner-back Cortland Finnegan is waiting to see if he

will become a free agent on Monday.

Finnegan and the Tennes-see Titans have until 4 p.m. local time to reach a contract agreement. If the Titans fran-chise the cornerback they drafted out of Samford Uni-versity in 2006 in the seventh round, he could make between $10 and $11 million dollars,

which is the average salary of the top fi ve cor-nerbacks in the NFL at this time.

Tennessee also could do nothing by Mon-day’s deadline, which would then allow the former Milton standout to test the free agen-cy market.

NFL free agency will begin March 13.Finnegan, who was a 2008 Pro-Bowl selec-

tion and All-Pro defensive back, has 473 tack-les, six sacks and 14 interceptions in his NFL career.

During his career, Finnegan also has been the subject of the NFL’s discipline committee, with three fi nes for rough or illegal hits.

The biggest fi ne came in 2010 when he and Houston receiver Andre Johnson were fi ned $25,000 and ejected from a game for fi ghting.

Milton and Pace continue to dominate the area softball competition. Both teams won this week as their starting pitchers recorded no-hitters.

On Tuesday, Milton rolled Pine Forest at home 15-0 in four innings.

Milton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fi rst inning, and that was all Katie Worley needed as she pitched four perfect in-

nings with nine strikeouts.Kristen Vaughn led the

Lady Panthers with three RBIs, going 1 for 3 while Em-ily Vasquez, Jess Robinson and Jacquelyn Kahler each fi nished with two RBIs.

Pace’s Taylor Wade was not to be outdone on Tuesday, as she struck out 12 in the Lady Patriots’ 14-0 win over Washington High.

Wade, who tossed her sec-ond perfect game of the sea-son, benefi ted as the Lady

Pats erupted for 11 runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Wade, Mallory Carpenter and Broke Bibza each fi nished the game with three RBIs each as Pace also capitalized on seven Lady Wildcat errors.

At Northview on Tuesday, the Jay Lady Royals walked away with a 12-1 win over the Lady Chiefs.

Sidney Lowery improved to 1-1 on the season as the Lady Royals notched their fi rst dis-trict win of the season while

striking out six.Lowery helped her own

cause by driving in three runs as Becca Calloway drove in two.

In baseball, Jay scored four runs in the eighth inning to top Baker 5-1 in Baker.

Tyler Prescott went the distance and allowed just one run in the third inning while striking out eight in the win.

Sammie James led the Royals by going 2 for 3 at the plate.

Kenyon College has quite a reputa-tion in swimming, winning 31 consecutive Division III national swimming titles in a row.

Pace senior Ryan Funk has a goal of helping them to start a new streak.

“Kenyon has a very presti-gious swimming program when it comes to swimming, and last year they were the runners-up for the national title by one point,” Funk said. “Maybe I could go up there and help them bring the title back.”

Funk, whose older brother Brandon swims at Boston University, received in-terest and offers from places like Boston University, Ohio State, Georgia Tech and other Division I programs, but he chose a different route.

“At Kenyon there will be people there to push me to get better, and I like helping to win a team championship,” Funk said.

“If I went to a D-I school, I feel like I would be more on the lower end and would be swimming for myself and not the team.”

Funk competed this year at Pace and left his mark along with his brother Bran-

don on the program, but it has been a little different swimming his senior year.

“This year did feel a little weird without my brother being on the team,” Funk said. “We swam together at Greater Pensacola Aquatic Club, Pace High School until this year so it was different training without him.

“I was fortunate to have great teammates around me, but I missed hav-ing him push me.”

The loss of the youngest of the Funk brothers will leave a void for Pace head swim coach Maggie Ramirez.

“I miss Ryan already,” Ramirez said. “He has been a great swimmer all four years at Pace, and I am also excited for him as he got the school he wanted to attend.”

Northwest Florida State College head baseball coach Bill Martin will tell you ev-eryone loves to win, but a player like Stephen Jernigan hates to lose.

That is just what the Raiders are looking for as they signed Jernigan on Tuesday to a base-ball scholarship.

Jernigan, who plays fi rst base and pitches, is looking to take this opportunity being offered to him at the junior college level and turn it into another opportunity.

“I am looking at playing my two years in Niceville and then transfer out to a Di-vision I team or see what else might hap-pen,” Jernigan said.

While he was going through the re-

cruiting process, the Pace senior looked at schools like NWFSC, Chipola Com-munity College and Pensacola State College.

Jernigan is focused on the season ahead at Pace, but he knows what is expected of him when he ar-rives in Niceville next season.

“I am looking to come in and start at fi rst base and make that my position as well as becoming one of the main batters in the line-up,” Jernigan said. “I might get to throw off the mound some, but a lot of that will probably depend on the team’s depth at that spot.”

It is that intensity that attracted Mar-tin to the Pace senior.

“(Stephen) hates to lose,” Martin said. “That is what stood out about him, his in-tensity … and he brings that to the table every game.”

Pace tennis standout Britni Thibodeau had big plans for her tennis career until she made a visit to Montgomery, Ala.

As soon as the Lady Patriots No. 1 player visited Huntingdon College, she found where she plans to hone her tennis skills.

“I was thinking about a big college,” Thibodeau said. “Then when I visited Huntingdon, I knew that is where I wanted to go. The school is a lot like Pace, and I felt right at home.”

Thibodeau also was interested in Agnes-Scott and the University of West Florida and had talked to the University of South Florida.

As a freshman, Thibodeau hopes to make an immediate impact for Huntingdon.

“I didn’t know what to expect, but they have a great coach and I got along with

everyone there really well,” she said. “I think the coaches expect me to make an immediate impact and told me there were some things to my game that we can work on and what I can work on during

the summer before I go to school there this fall.”

While Thibodeau was making things offi cial about her college plans, Pace head tennis coach Bob Metty talked about the effect the senior has had on the girls ten-nis program at Pace.

“I am so proud of Britni today,” Metty said. “She is a great player, and our loss is Huntingdon’s gain.

“Britni is the best player we have had here at Pace in the last decade.”

Thibodeau was taken by surprise when she heard those words from her coach, es-pecially during the season.

“I expected him to say some nice things about me,” she said, “but for him to say something like that was very fl atter-ing and extremely surprising at the same time.

To kick off the last day in Black History Month, the African American Culture Club at Milton High School put on a presentation inside the Milton High School auditorium on Wednes-day celebrating the many forms of black history art and music.

The presentation brought out performances from the AACC step team, the Milton Jazz Band and several singing performances by African American students at the school.

Cindy Hyman, a social studies teacher at Milton High and AACC sponsor helped put on the performance to help educate students about the importance of black history.

During the half hour program, students were educated about soul music legends like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye.

Hyman told students that Black History Month is not just for African Americans, but is about African American accomplishments and how they touch every person’s life.

Hyman told students, “This month is not just for African Americans … anyone can celebrate Black History Month.”
