My Dear Brothers in Christ:“Hope springs eternal in the human heart!”

As long as we keep on believing, our momentum becomes steadfast in everything that we do.The season figuratively welcomes Spring.Of new beginnings, resonating freshness, blooms and moving fast forward marching to this benevolent month of March! As we talk about forging a new era of Knights, it meant reaching a new generation of men, new ceremonials for the new Knights of charity, unity, and fraternity ,as we open more opportunities that empowers the Order to grow.First degree to the Fourth degree meant a secrecy since the early 1880’s onwards. Secrecy creates an impediment to get new younger members whilst others have no ceremonial team. Thus, combining the First, Second and Third degrees into a trifold ceremony maybe held in the chamber or church where families can witness the ceremony. The vision of Fr Michael J. McGivney to manifest Christ’s love to others - entrusted this to the layman in unity of the clergy to direct and carry out this mission to the rite and order of the church.Charity Christ redeeming us is the real meaning of charity. Sincere giving of oneself to humanity.Priceless gift - greatest virtue to bear, forgive,Is greatest in unity.Symbol- CrucifixUnityShared Catholic faith founded in the unity of God- one faith, one God and one church.Exemplified in marriage - faith and love for the church and family- united in the pursuit of this mission of a perfect union with a common cause.Symbol -CableFraternityMen of others and integrity. Protects and stand united with his brothers to bear one another’s burden. Encourage one another and protect the family. This principle is a virtue of a Knight to serve the Church in solidarity with the priest,

Vivat Jesus! In Latin for -Jesus Lives!A greeting that remains to strengthen faith of the order. We invoke the protection of the Virgin Mary, Our Queen and Mother by praying the Rosary. The Hail Mary is our weapon to face the challenges and conquer our battles. We must always carry the rosary (keeping it in your pocket) and pray as often as you can.As the weeks of Lent progresses, let us not tire of doing our stewardship and penance, but continue with the enthusiasm of our respective vocations on our way to the Easter season.May this observance of Lent and of penance be a prayerful and fruitful journey as we be more contemplative of our Catholic Faith.Thank you for all your good works and commitment to the Order!

Vivat Jesus!

State Chaplain’s Message

My Brother Knights:

On February 26th, we began and entered into the Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. During this 40 day period, we are encouraged to implement THREE Lenten practices: Prayer, Penance (Fasting & Abstinence, self-denial) & acts of charity (alms-giving & outreach helping the poor & needy). If we just focused on many of our K of C Pastoral works & projects, these are "our Faith in Action" activities.

I encourage all Council Officers to attend the coming Nevada State Convention on May 1 - 3 at Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish. Bring your spouses, Ladies Auxiliaries & family members to attend RETREAT (Spiritual Reflections) on first Friday, May 1st starting at 2:00PM - 5:00PM. Let's all show up on time. More details will be announced & shared in April's State Chaplain Message.

There are 2 pamphlets/booklets that every Knights should have & read: 1) Into the Breach & 2) Complete my Joy. We plan to order these and hand them out during our State Convention. I look forward to  personally meeting you and your family members at the Convention.

Vivat Jesus!

A Message from the State Membership Director

Greeting Brother Knights,  I am happy to report that Nevada is still #1 in all of North America!! We have fallen to #8 in the jurisdiction however. Still very good and we should all be proud of our accomplishments.

Many councils have started doing the new Formation Degree Ceremony in place of the old First Degree format but some are having trouble adapting to the change. Please keep in mind, that with the new Formation Degree, your team can now read from the script. This really makes a difference and makes it very easy.

I have attended at least 5 of the Formation Degree Ceremonies; some in church after Mass, while others in the Council Hall. Please ask your First Degree teams to view the video and see just how easy it is to perform; it really is.

I know that change can sometimes be hard to embrace, but let’s not stop the great year that Nevada has been having. I’m here to help in any way that I can, so please let me know what I can do to help your council.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the State Convention on May 1,2 and 3. Please check the state website on all the events that we have planned.

Vivat Jesus!

A Message from the State Retention Director

RETENTION: A COUNCIL’S RESPONSIBILITY

Knights one and all! It is time for ALL members of the council to ‘step up and work’. We all are in councils where about 1⁄2 of the Knights are seldom seen. Well, the unseen Knights are all about us. These are our brothers who have lapsed from attendance. They may have been active before but now because of age, health, interest etc. they have put the Knights on a back burner. Enter the Active Knight. We need these men. AND WE’RE GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Active Knights in the Council, if the FS and Council Membership/Retention Chairmen have done their jobs, then it’s NOW up to you. Your FS has mailed out dues membership and some of them have come back undeliverable. He has contacted Supreme and verified that the address & phone #’s are correct.

#1. Do you know the member? #2. Try to contact the member. Ring doorbell, call, knock on door etc. #3. If personal contact is not available, try the social media. Enter his name on Facebook, Twitter etc. Sometimes he will be on one of those sites and voila: CONTACT. #4. If you cannot make contact, then return info too FS who will contact me. #5. If you make contact, then it is time to: OUTREACH! “How are you? What’s happening, etc.” Fraternal not confrontational! It is a time of “I’m interested in YOU.”

All of us are capable of doing this. LET’S DO IT! After acceptance; let the FS send the dues notice. If the gentleman does not want to be a knight, give him a sheet of paper and have them write the request down along with membership # and give to the FS. He knows what to do.

Gentlemen, for the next 4 months we are all RETENTION CHAIRMEN. WE are the Council. We are Responsible for the Council. Encourage your Retention Chairman and FS to implement this program. Just think 20 years from now how nice it would be to have a fellow Knight call and offer to take you to Mass, meeting or the local watering hole.

State Historian Report and March 2020 “Knight in the Light”

Keep the new membership growth going!!! Kudos to our Leadership Team (State Officers, District Deputies, Grand Knights and Council Members) on continuing to build our new member signups statewide.

Other updates are as follows:

1. I am continuing to work with the District Deputy’s and Grand Knight’s to appoint a respective Council Historian, for this new Columbian year and going forward. The Council Historian will assist the State Historian in reaching into the respective Council archives for access to the significant events or activities of the Council and Brother Knights. In some Councils this role will reside with the Grand Knight, due to size of Council membership. Please be prepared to discuss who is best suited for this position in your Council. As always, this is your chance to tell and record your Council’s continuing story!

2. In concert with our new Worthy State Deputy Toni F. Pascua and myself, we recommend Councils setting up a “cloud based” storage system for each Council’s records, photos, activity accounting, etc. The continuity of record keeping can then be documented/updated over the continuing “Columbian Year” by the Council Historian.

3. To accomplish the infill of Past State Deputy’s Biographical information, from 2000 to the current Columbian year; I will continue to work with resources from Supreme and PSD Ray Gardea to collect and archive this information. As mentioned before, we have received Biographical information for a few PSD’s.

Please use my email address: [email protected] to assist in adding any historic documentation, as indicated above, to capture the Nevada State history of our Fraternal Order. I look forward to continuing to work with my Brothers. Make this new Columbian Year the best year ever for your respective Council and Assembly.

“Knight in the Light”

WPSD Sir Knight Gabriel Frank Perry, FDD, PFN, PGK

Currently in his 80th year of service as a Knight of Columbus! This is Phenomenal; Think About It!!!

Worthy Past State Deputy, Sir Knight Gabe Perry is in his 98 year, born in Ogden, Utah on May 25, 1922; his family moved to Ely when he was five. SK Gabe got an early start with the Knights of Columbus, inspired to join by Joe McMasters who handed him an application to join the Knights at his High School graduation (perhaps this is something for us to consider as a member recruiting arena). Gabe had a diploma in one hand and the Knights application in the other. He waited until August 1940, as he had to make some money to pay his dues to join. He joined the U. S. Army in 1943 and served in the European Theater in the AJD office, monitoring and recording troop movements, Corporal Perry was Honorably discharged in 1946.

Sir Knight Gabe was married to Ida, his high school sweetheart, in 1942. They had one daughter. As things progressed, they now have four Great-Grand-Children.

Our Past State Deputy then moved from Ely to Reno to take a position with a local automotive parts supply company in 1946. He was with this company 28 years. SK Gabe’s next adventure was with the Truckee Meadows Community College where he used his knowledge, experience and contacts in the automobile industry, to start an Automobile Mechanic Training Program. Sir Knight Gabe created this program at TMCC by contacting the automobile manufactures; Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Chrysler, based on the relationships he built in his previous position. These Automobile manufactures, collectively, over the period mentioned donated 29 automobiles for instructional purposes. The local dealers, independent garages, and others also contributed smaller units for instructional use. He developed and taught the curriculum there for 30 years.

Concurrently, SK Gabe was active in the Knights of Columbus Council 1340, Sacred Heart, in Ely, NV and then transferred to Council 978, Nevada in Reno. He advanced in the chairs to serve as Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, Bishop Manogue Assembly 612, District Deputy and ultimately as State Deputy for two terms, 1960 thru 1962. Upon stepping in as State Deputy, he immediately set up a meeting with Bishop Robert Joseph Dwyer, Bishop of Reno 1952-1966, the second Bishop of Reno, to ask how the Knights of Columbus could service the Diocese. Bishop Dwyer’s response was, to establish a Knights of Columbus Council in every Parish. Additionally, Sir Knight Perry’s focus as State Deputy was to develop KofC programs centered around Family Care and Support. He took office with four active Councils in the State; leaving State Office with four additional

Councils established; Council 4928- Ponderosa, Sparks; Council 4828-Fallon; Council 4997-Msgr. Patrick J. Connors, Our Lady of Snows and Council 4781-Sierras Madre, Carson City. He recalled a particularly proud time during his term when the Third-Degree ceremony at Council 4781, Carson City had 100 Knights participating.

SK Gabe attends Our Lady of Snows and has served as Reader and Eucharistic Minister. Additionally, as President of the Parents Club at Bishop Manogue High School.

In reflection of the past, almost, five decades since serving as State Deputy, SK Perry has mentored other State Deputies and has continued to bring inspiration to the Knights of Columbus Fraternal Order as he has given back, throughout his career, the support and inspiration he received at an early age when he became a member of the Knights of Columbus. If you want to say hello! WPSD Gabe can be emailed at [email protected]
